The AirPods Max have a great deal on at the moment — but here's what you should buy instead

Tom's Guide04-07-2025
The AirPods Max, Apple's venerable over-ear noise cancelers, look unlike anything else you can buy for the price. They pack good sound, good comfort and excellent controls into a package that few can afford.
The price has just dropped, meaning you can now pick up a pair with an $80 discount at Amazon, where they're now $479. But I think you should still buy something else.
There's a much better pair of headphones for less that are just as premium, but cost less, sound better, and arguably give you much better value for money.
The AirPods Max are Apple's flagship headphones, and despite a recent USB-C update they've remained mostly the same since their initial release. They're a weighty, well built pair of headphones that sound really good — earning 4 stars in our review — but they're starting to get a bit long in the tooth at this point.
While I can't deny that the AirPods Max are, indeed, a very attractive pair of headphones, their other merits are starting to wear off as they get older and older. Bluetooth 5.0 feels distinctly out of date, even with Apple's magic pairing and interoperability.
They still sound very good, but cheaper alternatives are cropping up with better sound. Even their looks are starting to slip, with the likes of the Nothing Headphone (1) coming out. USB-C audio mode? Headphones that cost half as much pack that in now. The AirPods lustre is starting to show some tarnish.
Even at this deal price, the best thing you're getting is the sumptuous build quality and wonderful dial-like control on the right earcup. If you're looking for something worth the $449 you'll spend, look no further than my favorite headphones of 2025. The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3.
The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3 are my favorite pair of headphones. They're extremely comfortable, look the part with loads of premium materials on display, and they sound monumental.
Since testing them earlier this year, they've become my no. 1 most used pair of headphones by far. They're better than the AirPods Max in loads of ways too — and even though they're full price at the moment, they're still cheaper than the reduced AirPods Max.
Bowers & Wilkins brought its A-game when making the PX7 S3. They sound impeccable, with a great sound signature that does a better job with detail and mid-range grunt than the AirPods Max. I gave them a 4.5 star review when I tested them earlier this year thanks to their good protective case and solid battery life.
These cans feature better battery life, with 10 hours more on tap than the AirPods. While perhaps less visually interesting, I'd argue they're a more handsome option than Apple's headphones.
The protective case is better, their features are more useful, and charging quicker. There are so many reasons to buy what are my pick for the best headphones you can buy today — and if you wait for Prime Day, you might even see a reduction.

iPhone 17 Air tipped to make 3 big compromises from the iPhone 17 Pro - here's what you're giving up

Like Samsung and its Galaxy S25 Edge, Apple will reportedly chase a thinner phone design when it releases the much-rumored iPhone 17 Air later this fall. A likely replacement for the iPhone 16 Plus, the Air could deliver a thinner phone to the iPhone 17 lineup, but not without making a few key compromises. That's what regular leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims in a Weibo post, anyway. The leaker says that the iPhone 17 Air will be very similar to the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, but with three big sacrifices in the name of a thinner phone. 'It has almost all the configurations of the Pro, but it cuts one core in the GPU part, and the screen and battery are not as good as the Pro,' Fixed Focus Digital wrote in the machine-translated post, adding that they were 'quite optimistic' about the iPhone 17 Air. What this means is that the iPhone 17 Air will still feature an A19 Pro chipset, as we expect to see in the Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, but that it will have five GPU cores instead of the six found in the Pro models' chipset. The Air would still be more powerful than the standard iPhone 17, which is supposed to have a standard A19 processor. Fixed Focus doesn't specify, but they also mentioned that the screen and battery are supposed to be steps back from what the iPhone 16 Plus offers.. Current rumors have the iPhone 17 Air featuring a 6.6-inch OLED display, a skosh smaller than the iPhone 16 Plus' 6.7-inch panel. The same leaker previously claimed that the Air would have a 120Hz screen but not a ProMotion display, so it won't have a variable refresh rate. A thinner phone usually means a smaller capacity battery — that's one of the compromises Samsung had to make with the Galaxy S25 Edge. But Apple may go even smaller with the iPhone 17 Air's power pack as reports claim the phone will either feature a 2,800 mAh battery or a 2,900 mAh cell. Either outcome would be smaller than the 3,900 mAh battery in the S25 Edge. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The iPhone 16 Pro was able to fit a larger 3,582 mAh battery in the phone. We haven't seen many rumors on battery size for the iPhone 17 Pro, but it could rely on better power efficiency to get more life out of the battery. Even compared to the standard iPhone 17, the Air model is expected to have a more limited camera setup. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the Air will only feature a single 48MP rear lens, and leaked renders of the iPhone 17 Air seem to bear that rumor out In contrast, the standard iPhone 17 should have the same 48MP primary lens and a 12MP ultrawide as the iPhone 16. Meanwhile, the Pro models could feature an upgraded 48MP telephoto lens in their rear camera array. Add it all up and it feels like the iPhone 17 Air is making a lot of major compromises to reach a very specific aesthetic over actual performance. Even so, Fixed Focus Digital believes the phone will be a hit, so it will be interesting to see how people respond to iPhone 17 Air when it arrives. That could be very soon as the iPhone 17 series is likely to launch in September — just a few weeks from now. Amazon's Choice Waterproof and Floatable Speakers Are Nearly Free, Cheaper Than Black Friday and Prime Day

A good Bluetooth speaker is a really good investment. As we try to move away from screens more and more in our spare time, or at least sometimes, it's nice to have other ways to keep your brain going. Music, podcasts, and audiobooks are all great ways to make the most of a speaker, so the only thing you need to do is find a good one, and then somehow make it cheaper. Look, we just like saving money. Right now, Amazon has 40% off the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 Bluetooth Speaker, which means it's down to just $60 for a limited time. That's a great discount, but it's also one that's just not going to stick around for very long. See at Amazon A Bluetooth speaker like this is something you can use anywhere in your home, and more importantly, is also something you can use outside of your home too. It means that you can just move it between rooms as you want or need to, which is a great help if you're in the middle of an album but you need to start cooking or something. Nobody likes being interrupted. The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 Bluetooth Speaker is on sale in both blue and black, and it's basically handheld in terms of size, which makes it easier to move around. It's not lacking in power despite that size though, because this thing is actually capable of 360-degree sound, which means that you don't have to worry too much about where you place it. It's also built to be great with water. This means that having it in the bathroom with you is really good, but it can also float. This means that you can go ahead and put it on your swimming pool as you chill in it with mates, and you can all keep the party going with no issues when it comes to the audio side of things. Heck, you can even get two of them to pair them up and boost the audio power overall as well. You can even get up to 14 hours of playtime on a full charge, which is great if you just want to charge it once every so often. This awesome speaker would normally set you back $100, so being able to get one for just $60 is the kind of discount you shouldn't miss out on. We don't know when the deal will end though, so make sure you're quick if you do want it. See at Amazon

Amazon Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery

Amazon plans to expand the option to 2,300 cities and towns across the U.S by the end of 2025. When Amazon examined its most purchased items, one thing stood out: food. In June, the company announced that groceries, "from household essentials and pantry staples to fresh produce, dairy and meat," were among the most frequently purchased items in all of Amazon's online stores. This led the tech giant to accelerate its delivery service for household staples to rural towns. Now, Amazon is adding food to the list, making same-day delivery for groceries available to more than 1,000 cities, including Columbus, Ohio; Tampa, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Amazon announced on Wednesday. The company also plans to more than double that number to 2,300 by the end of 2025. Related: Amazon Now Employs Nearly as Many Robots as People in Its Warehouses The new service includes thousands of items, including produce, meat, dairy, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods. Amazon says strawberries, Honeycrisp apples, limes, and avocados are in the top 10 most ordered same-day items. "Customers can now order milk alongside electronics; oranges, apples, and potatoes with a mystery novel; and frozen pizza at the same time as tools for their next home improvement project—and check out with one cart and have everything delivered to their doorstep within hours," the company said in a press release. How does Amazon keep groceries fresh? Amazon touts its "specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network" to keep perishable food fresh during transport and delivery. "Every item [undergoes] a six-point quality check upon arrival and before leaving for delivery," the company noted. "Temperature-sensitive products are delivered in insulated bags that are recyclable in most curbside recycling programs, the same used for Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market deliveries, to ensure items remain at appropriate temperatures." Related: Amazon Tells Thousands of Employees to Relocate or Resign How much does Same-Day Delivery cost? The service is free for Prime members with orders over $25, and the deliveries occur within hours of ordering. (Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year.) If your order is less than the minimum, you can still choose Same-Day Delivery for a $2.99 fee. Amazon customers who are not Prime members can get same-day delivery for a $12.99 fee per order with no limit to order size. When will same-day grocery delivery expand to more cities? By the end of 2025, Amazon plans to expand the option to 2,300 cities and towns across the U.S. For all locations, click here.
