Olympian teams up with researchers to make PE kit more inclusive for teen girls

Independent14 hours ago
An Olympic sports star has teamed up with academic experts to help teenage girls feel more comfortable in their school PE kits.
Tess Howard, who competed for Team GB in the Paris 2024 games, has joined physical activity and diet specialist Dr Alice Porter to make school sports clothing fitter for purpose.
New research has shown that secondary school-aged girls would feel less self-conscious and more able to fully take part in PE lessons if they had more choice over their school sports kit.
The study involved interviews and focus groups with 12 to 13-year-old girls and PE teachers from mixed-sex secondary schools in England.
Its findings also revealed girls with lower self-esteem may be less likely to join in their PE lessons if compulsory items of clothing felt too tight or revealing.
Dr Alice Porter, from the University of Bristol, said: 'We all have memories of our school PE kits and whether they were appealing, comfy, and warm enough or not to wear.
'Previous research has found many girls feel uncomfortable wearing their PE kits.
'Our study looked at how PE kits affect how girls feel about their bodies, how much they are involved in, and their attitude towards school sports.
'Our findings clearly evidence that when girls don't have any choice over their PE uniform, this can be a deterrent to their participation, especially for girls who feel self-conscious and are lacking in self-confidence.'
By analysing pupils' lived experience and insights, the researchers also identified possible solutions to address the related issues, especially for teenage girls who may be more affected by school PE kit rules.
Results showed girls want to choose the types of bottoms, such as leggings, jogging bottoms, or shorts, they wear for PE.
They also want the option to wear additional layers, so they can cover up parts of their bodies they feel self-conscious about.
The research recommends that PE uniforms should be offered in a range of styles to suit all pupils and should not be gender-labelled for girls or boys, so irrespectively they feel empowered to choose what suits them best.
Changing rooms were also a big talking point for girls in the study, with many feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious changing for PE.
A possible solution identified was for schools to allow pupils to wear their PE kit all day on the days they have PE lessons, an approach which girls and PE staff study participants widely supported.
The research has been used to develop free guidance and support for schools nationally on how to develop comfortable and inclusive PE kit policies and practices.
The initiative, called the Inclusive Sportswear Community Platform, has been designed by Ms Howard.
'We're delighted to be working with University of Bristol researchers to support our work because PE kit should never be the reason someone stops playing sport or feels unable to fully participate,' the hockey star said.
'Kit is a public health issue, and it's a barrier that can be lifted. Far too often, traditional sports kit policies inadequately support the diverse needs of pupils and forget the purpose of sport – to have fun.
'The research findings have provided powerful insights, which we have used to create practical advice and solutions for schools.'
– The study, A qualitative study in UK secondary schools exploring how PE uniform policies influence body image attitudes, and PE engagement among adolescent girls, is published in the journal BMJ Open.

England legend gives key advice on how to stop Sweden star's 'superpower'

Kelly Smith was part of the England squad which reached the final of Euro 2009 and has worked with some of Sweden's biggest quarter-final dangers as an Arsenal coach The Euro 2025 quarter-final between England and Sweden carries a strong Arsenal flavour. Lionesses captain Leah Williamson will be going up against club colleague Stina Blackstenius, while there are several other current and former Gunners on both teams. ‌ All this makes Kelly Smith brilliantly placed to assess the threat of Peter Gerhardsson's side. Former England striker Smith is part of Arsenal's coaching staff, working day-to-day with the likes of Williamson and Blackstenius, and also played with England's captain when the pair were at opposite ends of their careers. ‌ "There's a lot of pressure on Leah, being England captain," Smith tells Mirror Football, describing Williamson as a "very intelligent" person. "The responsibilities that she has with the media and outside stuff, she's got to galvanise the squad and keep them together. ‌ "Obviously there are other leaders within that set-up, but she's very outspoken and not afraid to give her opinion whether it's positive or negative. You want someone who's going to bat for your team like that and she's certainly got all those attributes to lead the country and hopefully beat Sweden tonight" Sweden go into the tie off the back of three straight wins in the group stages. And, while England will need to stop striker Blackstenius, there could well be danger from elsewhere too. "You have to possess the ball so Sweden don't hit you on the counter-attack and play long balls over the top into space in the channels for Stina, because that's her superpower," Smith adds. "Running in behind, timing her runs. Obviously she's so quick that it's hard to keep up with her if Sweden get those opportunities to play those long balls. ‌ "But Sweden have other threats too, they're very good at set pieces with [former Arsenal pair] Amanda Ilestedt and Lina Hurtig. Very dynamic in the air, good and strong, so England will have to watch out for set pieces and not give too many free-kicks or corners away because Sweden are very good in those areas." Smith is speaking via EE, whose 'Everyone Needs a Squad' campaign aims to help girls across the country build confidence and belonging on and off the pitch. While the impact of the Lionesses' 2022 Euros triumph has been plain to see, with fans kitted out in England shirts all over Switzerland, the former striker is keen to emphasise that - while some things have got easier in women's football since her childhood, others are now tougher. ‌ "After 2022 there was a lot of uptake of girls playing football, and this campaign is to highlight the benefits of football, building resilience and confidence in young teenage girls," she says. "Because in this day and age with social media and the pressures of it, it helps build skills to protect them against [those] pressures. "I know when I was growing up, obviously social media wasn't around then but football gave me so much belief within myself, happiness, confidence, resilience. It's a team sport so you're working together for a common goal to try and win games or just having fun with your friends. It really build up my confidence, because I wasn't the most comfortable and didn't really have a lot of friends so football enabled me to have a football family, so to speak, and it really built my confidence up as a young kid. So I was grateful to be a part of this everyone needs a squad campaign because it's vital that girls are involved in football - it gives you so much." ‌ Some of England's players at Euro 2025 have spoken about how important their bubble has been when it comes to staying focused on the task at hand, and Smith recognises different players will have different approaches. "Some players I know take themselves off social media for those six weeks that they're away, four weeks or however long they're in the tournament and get their management team to do it," she adds. "When I was playing, it wasn't prevalent. It wasn't there. The back end of my career it was, but I think I was old enough and mentally in a better place then. It's a harsh world now and it could really affect you if you're not strong enough mentally. So football gives that escape and confidence for young girls and and women on social media.." Kelly Smith is supporting EE's 'Everyone Needs a Squad' campaign to help girls across the country build confidence and belonging on and off the pitch. For more information visit Additionally, the campaign includes the EE Squad Socials. Taking place at locations across the UK, (Brighton 19th July and London Sunday 27th July) the events provide a vibrant space for teenage girls and their families to play, connect, and celebrate self-expression through football.

Lewis Hamilton eyes key Ferrari F1 breakthrough after testing in Mugello

Lewis Hamilton is testing a new rear suspension on this year's Ferrari F1 car in Mugello today. Hamilton, as well as teammate Charles Leclerc, will drive the SF-25 car around the Italian circuit on Thursday, in addition to a session on Wednesday, as both drivers eye a breakthrough in car performance at the halfway stage of the 2025 season. Both will take to the cockpit on Thursday, with a total of 200km of running allowed as per F1's rules as part of a 'filming day'. Ferrari hope that the new suspension, alongside a new floor upgrade at round 11 in Austria, will extract more performance from a car which is yet to win a race this year. The Scuderia believe the new suspension will help the car be less sensitive to various ride heights, opening up more set-up options for qualifying and the race. The added benefit of this week's testing session comes ahead of next week's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, which is also a sprint event, meaning there will be just one practice session. Hamilton is yet to finish on the podium in a grand prix, with three best-place finishes of fourth, including at his home race last time out in Silverstone. Leclerc, meanwhile, has finished on the podium four times but is yet to taste victory. Neither driver has recorded a pole position, either. The three teams to have won race so far this season are McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes. Hamilton, in his first season at Ferrari since his move from Mercedes, is currently sixth in the drivers' standings, a whopping 131 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri. Leclerc is one spot, and 16 points, ahead of Hamilton in fifth. Both Hamilton (five times) and Leclerc (once) have won at Spa-Francorchamps, the longest track on the 24-race calendar. Hamilton won last year's race after George Russell, who won the race on-track, was disqualified post-race.
