Wimbledon 2025: Anisimova ends Czech three-peat hopes with victory over Noskova

The Hindu07-07-2025
Amanda Anisimova ended Linda Noskova's hopes of completing a 'Czech three-peat' at Wimbledon on Sunday after the American 13th seed brought out her A-game to end her rival's barnstorming run with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory to reach the quarterfinals.
After Marketa Vondrousova's and Barbora Krejcikova's unexpected triumphs at the All England Club over the past two years, 30th seed Noskova would have harboured hopes of following in their footsteps, especially as she was the last Czech standing among the eight who had started in the women's draw.
However, Anisimova wasted little time in exposing Noskova's lack of grasscourt craft as she broke the 30th seed for a 2-0 lead with some crisp hitting from the baseline and again in the eighth game to capture the first set with a scorching forehand winner.
Played under a closed Court One roof on a soggy day at Wimbledon, the contest failed to catch fire during the opening set as the majority of ticket holders in the 12,000-capacity arena had abandoned their seats following British hope Cameron Norrie's nerve-jangling four-and-a-half-hour win over Nicolas Jarry.
The smattering of spectators who did stick around saw Noskova, who had won only one match at Wimbledon before this week, find her comfort zone in the floodlit arena in the second set as she broke for a 2-1 lead.

The 20-year-old missed her chance to level the match when she served at 5-4, with Anisimova saving a set point with a mis-hit service return winner en route to grabbing the break back to level at 5-5.
Noskova did not dwell on that near-miss, and she broke again for a 6-5 lead before making sure her opponent did not get a look-in on her next set point, firing down an ace to seal it.
Anisimova looked to be on her way out when she fell behind 3-1 in the deciding set, but, with her support team telling her to 'keep on believing', she fought back to 3-3 before eventually ending the two-hour tussle on her second match point with a backhand winner.
Anisimova matched her best Wimbledon result by reaching the quarter-finals for the second time and will next meet Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

F1 A 'Healthy' Space Without Disgraced Red Bull Boss Christian Horner, Says McLaren's Zak Brown

Last Updated: McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes F1 is healthier after Christian Horner's exit as Red Bull team principal. Brown welcomed Laurent Mekies, hoping for a more constructive atmosphere. Formula One is in a better place following Christian Horner's exit as Red Bull team principal, according to McLaren CEO Zak Brown. Speaking after Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, Brown welcomed Horner's replacement, Laurent Mekies, and expressed optimism that the change would usher in a more constructive atmosphere across the paddock. 'I just left having a chat with Laurent. I'm happy he's in the role he's in," Brown told reporters in Budapest. 'I like Laurent, and I think that'll be healthy, and maybe we can get back to focusing on competition on the track." Brown's endorsement of Mekies—a well-respected figure in F1 with experience at Toro Rosso and Ferrari—comes after what he described as an increasingly 'unhealthy" dynamic at Red Bull under Horner's leadership. 'There's always going to be some political aspects to the sport," Brown added. 'I think it's going to be healthier with Laurent. I'm a fan of Laurent, I've known him for a long time, and I think it'll be good to go racing against him." Brown and Horner shared a long history—one that began during their days racing in British Formula Three and evolved into a sharp-edged rivalry as team principals. Their clashes were frequent and public, especially after Red Bull's cost cap breach in 2021, which McLaren saw as a serious sporting infraction. In 2022, Brown accused Red Bull of cheating when the FIA ruled that they had exceeded the $145 million spending limit. Horner fired back, calling Brown's comments 'tremendously disappointing." The tension often spilled into the media and was amplified in Netflix's Drive to Survive, where Horner was frequently portrayed as the sport's 'pantomime villain." While Max Verstappen continued to dominate the drivers' standings—winning his fourth consecutive title in 2024—McLaren ended Red Bull's run of constructor dominance last season. The competition on track was fierce, but Brown believes that Red Bull's internal culture under Horner had become toxic. Departure Under a Cloud Red Bull announced Horner's dismissal on July 9. Though no official reason was given, his departure followed a turbulent year in which he faced and denied allegations of misconduct made by a female Red Bull employee. He was ultimately cleared after an internal investigation, and he has not commented publicly since leaving the team. Brown did not directly reference those allegations, but he alluded to the broader dysfunction: 'It didn't seem like a healthy environment," he said of Red Bull under Horner. Brown emphasized his desire to return to a more respectful brand of competition—where fierce rivalry can coexist with mutual admiration and professionalism. 'From a fan's point of view, the drama of the villain stuff, I think, works," he said. 'But I also think the celebratory 'fight it out on track and photobomb each other'—I think that's a more fun way to go racing." He noted that Horner's approach often pushed the limits, particularly when it came to technical accusations such as McLaren's alleged use of 'flexi-wings.' 'When you start getting into frivolous allegations, I think that's just going too far," Brown said. 'If I look up and down the pit lane now, I see us fighting each other hard politically—but there being a line that's not crossed." 'That line got crossed before," he added. 'So I think we'll see a little bit of a change for the better." News18 Sports brings you the latest updates, live commentary, and highlights from cricket, football, tennis, badmintion, wwe and more. World Aquatics Championships: United States sets world record in women's 4x100 medley relay

The United States smashed its own world record in winning the women's 4x100m medley relay world title in Singapore on Sunday. The Americans were victorious in 3min 49.34sec, beating their previous record of 3:49.63 from the Paris Olympics a year ago. Australia finished second in 3:52.67, with China third in 3:54.77. The American team of Regan Smith, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske looked dominant from the off, and it wasn't much of a surprise when Huske touched the wall to seal the win. READ: World Swimming Championship: I don't lose 800 metre, says Ledecky after another gold medal 'This is the best way to end the meet, and I felt we had such a good opportunity with this stacked group of women closing it out in a relay like this,' said Walsh. 'We're going to put it all in the pool and we're going to leave Singapore with a smile on our face.' The American mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team also set a new world record on the way to gold the previous night. Huske said that she knew her team also had a chance of cracking the 4x100m medley mark. 'This is my favourite relay and there's no better way to end a meet, so I'm really happy,' said Huske. Indo-British golfer Aaron Rai stays in top-three at Wyndham Championship

Defending champion Aaron Rai shot 1-under 69 to stay in the top-three while Cameron Young added a 5-under 65 to earlier rounds of 63-62 to take a five-shot lead at the Wyndham Championship here. Indo-British Rai, whose rounds have been 63-66-69, is 12-under and lying tied third alongside Chris Kirk (67) and Mac Meissner (70). Colombian Nico Echavarria is sole second after a round of 64 and he is 15-under and five behind Young. On a storm-delayed second round in the morning, Rai had five birdies, three of them in a row from the 13th to the 15th and he also dropped four bogeys. Sahith Theegala had earlier missed the cut while the other Indian American Akshay Bhatia withdrew with five holes to go. When play was suspended, Bhatia had no chance of making the cut. Following the Wyndham Championship, the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings will qualify for next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first of three events in the FedExCup Playoffs. Rai and Bhatia are assured of a start at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Young, who is chasing a maiden PGA Tour title, had four straight birdies on the front nine and stretched his lead to eight shots at one stage Saturday before a series of pars saw him finish 5-under 65. Young capped off a bogey-free 65 in the storm-delayed second round in the morning. Then he stretched his lead with his four straight birdies, including a 30-footer on No. 4 and a two-putt birdie from 20 feet on the par-5 fifth. Young is widely considered as the best player to have never won on a main TOUR. He was runner-up seven times since his rookie season in 2021. That includes a World Golf Championship and more notably the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews. Young, who is 20-under 190, is also chasing a place on the Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black. He was No. 9 in the Ryder Cup standings in 2023 and left off the team. Kirk is at No. 73 in the FedExCup standings. The Wyndham Championship is the final event in the regular season and determines the top 70 who advance to the lucrative PGA TOUR postseason that starts next week in Memphis, Tennessee.
