AFL news, updates: Footy world divided over Nathan Buckley news as former Collingwood coach emerges as favourite for Melbourne Demons top job, John Longmire
The AFL world is divided over the news Collingwood legend Nathan Buckley could soon be at the helm of rivals Melbourne come next season.
Buckley, who played for the Magpies before then taking them to the 2018 grand final as coach, has emerged as the leading contender to be the Demons' next coach after Simon Goodwin was sacked earlier this week.

The 53-year-old told news.com.au earlier this year that a return to coaching appealed, but insisted he was happy with his current role with Fox Footy.
However, with the Demons' job opening up, Buckley appears to have had a change of mind, discreetly voicing his desire for the Melbourne top job.
John Longmire was understood to also be a top target of the Demons.
But on Saturday, he ruled himself out of any top job for the 2026 season, clearing the way for Buckley.

Many Demons fans are already licking their lips over the prospect of Buckley leading them in 2026; however, others were far from thrilled at having a coach who has previously coached an AFL rival.
'Bucks can rebuild the Dees,' one Demons fan wrote.
'What a scalp, lock him down Dees,' another added.
Others' reactions weren't as positive.
'I will projectile vomit and become a Giants fan,' another wrote.
'I would hate to see him coach the Demons,' a fourth said.

Buckley coached Collingwood from 2012 to 2021, before stepping down after a poor start to the 2021 season.
And speaking earlier this week, Buckley said he wasn't sure he was ready to give up his media roles to return to coaching but noted he was definitely open to the prospect of coaching the Demons.
'I would have a chat (with the Demons) but a lot would have to fall into place to leave this position of comfort I have found,' Buckley said on SEN on Wednesday.
'It's there (the coaching desire), otherwise it would be an easy no. I can't lie – when yesterday happened, I knew this would all come around again.
'Even in yourself, this brings a timeline forward again, if you feel like there's a case, if you like the people, if you see the opportunity to make a change and make a difference, then you're going to have to work that out quick smart.
'I expect the call will come. I will take the next steps as they come.'
And on Thursday, AFL champion Jason Dunstall revealed Buckley was 'missing coaching' and said his return to a top job was only a matter of time.
'Bucks would take a call from anyone, I would think,' Dunstall said after being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
'I have a feeling he's missing coaching, he loves it and he's so intense about it.

Donnell Wallam signs with Sunshine Coast Lightning, returning to Super Netball
Diamonds shooter Donnell Wallam will return to the Super Netball competition, signing with the Sunshine Coast Lightning for the 2026 season. Wallam spent the 2025 season across the Tasman, playing for the Northern Mystics in the ANZ Premiership, following a three-year stint with the Queensland Firebirds. Wallam was not offered a contract by the Firebirds at the end of 2024, despite being the second-highest goal scorer in the league that season. The Firebirds finished that season in last place, parted ways with then-head coach Bec Bulley with five matches remaining, and had an investigation launched by Netball Australia into the culture at the club. The Lightning have finished in the top four once in the previous four seasons, and were eliminated in the first round of the 2023 finals series. Wallam adds firepower to the Lightning front court, which scored the third-most goals in the league last season. Lightning coach Belinda Reynolds said Wallam's size and pinpoint shooting was an exciting prospect for the Queensland-based side. "Donnell has had an outstanding season with the Mystics in New Zealand. She's an exciting player to watch, and her strength and accuracy are unmatched," Reynolds said.

Shane Warne built a career off bamboozling opposition batsmen and his son Jackson has now revealed the Australian cricket legend was also far from an easy read for restaurant staff and patrons. The king of spin tragically died of a heart attack aged 52 on March 4, 2022, while staying at a luxury villa in Koh Samui, Thailand. But when he was alive, he was known for his insane sporting ability, charisma, quick wit and his childlike tastebuds. Warne was regularly seen downing a pizza, spaghetti bolognese or bacon sandwiches and would avoid fruit and vegetables at all costs. His pre-game preferences of baked beans on toast, and midgame snacks often raised eyebrows. Warne's friends often joked that his diet resembled that of a child rather than an athletic specimen. And in a rare insight into the sporting icon, his son Jackson revealed his father would even order takeaway from a different restaurant to the one he was at. 'You know (Japanese restaurant) Nobu and Rockpool at Crown?' Jackson said on the Life of Brian Podcast. 'There have been multiple times where he would have an important meeting or catch up with people there for dinner. 'He would go to the restaurants – he knew he wasn't going to eat anything – he would be looking at the menu (and say), 'I don't eat steak, these fish and oysters, no thanks, not for me'. 'So 40 minutes later, there would be a pizza from Gradi, just around the corner. 'He would be eating a pizza from a different restaurant in one of the restaurants there.' It isn't the first time light has been shed on Warne's truly unique dining traditions. Aussie pace legend Brett Lee revealed on the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast in November that it was almost a tradition for Warnie to order pizza to be delivered to any fancy restaurant he was at. ‘People are spinning': Footy legend drops $25 million bombshell
Essendon legend Tim Watson has dropped a bombshell Harley Reid rumour that would explain murmurings of dressing room drama at St Kilda. Watson on Tuesday morning said West Coast figures are under the impression the Saints have made Reid the biggest offer in the history of Australian football. The former No. 1 draft pick's contract saga has been a rollercoaster this season with Hawthorn and Essendon the clubs previously suggested to have been at the front of the queue trying to entice Reid back to Victoria. However, Essendon icon Watson said on SEN Breakfast on Wednesday it is the Saints that have now caused a stir behind the scenes with an offer of $25 million. That's the number that's coming via the West Coast Eagles at the moment,' Watson, a former Channel 7 news presenter, said on SEN Breakfast. 'I'm not making this up. This is what I was told yesterday. This has absolutely got everybody in the footy world spinning. 'That's the information that I received, that the West Coast Eagles believe that there's been an offer tabled by St Kilda around $25 million over 12 years.' It was reported last month that the Eagles had dived further into the piggy bank to present Reid with multiple contract offers, including one reported to have been worth more than $20 million. Watson said the rumoured plot to snatch Reid away from West Coast partly explains the playing group unrest at the Saints. St Kilda is already fighting to retain superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera and have reportedly already reached an agreement with Tom De Koning from Carlton. News reports broke on Monday night to suggest a group of senior players at St Kilda are not happy with list-management decisions made by football department boss Graeme Allan and recruitment chief Stephen Silvagni. The most damaging news surrounds All-Australian defender Cal Wilkie, with reports claiming he will 'seek his options elsewhere' at the end of this season. The 27-year-old's deal at the Saints runs through 2027, meaning any departure would have to come via trade. The Saints are thought to be offering Carlton ruckman De Koning $1.7 million per year, while they're said to have tabled $1.4 million per season to Wanganeen-Milera to stay at Moorabbin. They've also been strongly linked to and are expected to land out-of-contract GWS defender Leek Aleer on a considerable sum. However, SEN SA's Michelangelo Rucci reported on Monday that Wilkie, Jack Steele, Marcus Windhager and Rowan Marshall could be part of a mass St Kilda exodus at the end of the 2025 campaign. Watson said the reported monster money for Wanganeen-Milera, Reid, Aleer and De Koning would explain why St Kilda players would feel 'disgruntled'. 'When you think about it, if all that money was being paid out to those four players, particularly, you have to wonder what's left,' Watson said. 'What do they have left to be able to pay the rest of their list? If all those (contract offers) landed and maybe they hope they don't all land, then they have the irons in the fire and they have the potential to get some big names and keep NAS (Wanganeen-Milera), then they are serious about re-shaping their list, St Kilda.' SEN's Sam Edmund also said rival clubs believe Wilkie is 'gettable' because he is 'disillusioned' with the Saints. 'He's particularly concerned about the list management workings of his football club,' Edmund said on Seven. The news about Reid is another blow to the Eagles, who were already fighting suggestions that Hawthorn was throwing the kitchen sink to land the star midfielder. Nine's Tom Morris reported last week the Hawks were 'all in' on Reid and Port Adelaide's Zak Butters. Reid's management has reportedly made a counteroffer to West Coast in the vicinity of $24 million over 10 years — a two-year deal until 2027, then a nine-year extension — with the Hawks, Bombers and Cats among the rival clubs most consistently linked to the 20-year-old.
