Court of Appeal to hear Peter Anthony's review bid on July 9
KUALA LUMPUR: The Court of Appeal will hear on July 9 former Sabah Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony's application to review its earlier decision upholding his conviction and sentence of three years imprisonment and a RM50,000 fine for falsifying documents related to a maintenance and service contract at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin informed that the date was set during a case management via online proceedings today before Court of Appeal deputy registrar Mohd Khairi Harun.
'On the same date, the court will also hear the prosecution's preliminary objection against Peter's application for review,' Wan Shaharuddin told Bernama.
Also present at the proceedings were DPP Haresh Prakash Somiah and Peter's counsel, Datuk Rosal Azimin Ahmad.
On March 14, Peter filed a notice of motion seeking a review and to set aside the conviction and sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal on March 4 under Section 468 of the Penal Code.
Peter has also applied to set aside the warrant of committal dated March 4 issued to Kajang Prison against him, as well as for any consequential orders necessary to ensure justice in the matter.
On March 4, the Court of Appeal ordered Peter to serve a three-year prison sentence after dismissing his final appeal against the conviction and sentence imposed by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court in May 2022.
Peter had earlier filed an appeal on April 19, 2023, to overturn the conviction and sentence, but failed the bid when the Kuala Lumpur High Court subsequently upheld the Sessions Court's decision.
He has since paid the RM50,000 fine imposed.
According to the charge, Peter, in his capacity as managing director of Asli Jati Sdn Bhd, was accused of falsifying a letter from Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Office of the deputy vice-chancellor dated June 9, 2014, by inserting false statements with the intent to deceive.
The offence was allegedly committed at the Office of the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Perdana Putra Building, Putrajaya, between June 13 and Aug 21, 2014.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment and a fine under Section 468 of the Penal Code, upon conviction.

Mara gives RM1,000 aid to UPSI bus crash victims
KUALA LUMPUR: The Mara Education Foundation (Yayasan Pelajaran Mara) has provided RM1,000 emergency aid to each Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student involved in this morning's bush crash. Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the aid was intended to ease the burden on the victims and their families "I handed over the aid to the families of the deceased and visited those hospitalised at Gerik Hospital." Asyraf, who represented Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, also offered prayers for the victims' and strength for their families in this difficult time. "I was moved by the victims' condition by meeting their family members at Gerik Hospital. "It was heartbreaking to learn that some had just arrived from Jerteh, only to be met with the devastating news of their loved ones' deaths." Earlier today, 15 people were killed when the bus they were in collided with a multi-purpose vehicle on Jalan Jeli-Grik near Tasik Banding, Perak. The accident involved a bus carrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza. Thirty-three people were injured. The Civil Defence Force (APM) said the Banun Disaster Operations Control Centre received a distress call at 1.10am. APM personnel arrived at the scene at 2.11am to find the UPSI bus overturned and the Alza MPV severely damaged. Several victims were rushed to Gerik Hospital. It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jerteh at the time of the crash.

Gerik Bus Tragedy: Task Force Formed As Police Vows Swift Action
KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (Bernama) -- The fatal bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in the early hours of this morning near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak has prompted the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to establish a special task force to investigate the tragic incident. The task force, involving the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Road Transport Department (JPJ), Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and other relevant agencies, will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the police aim to complete the investigation report as soon as possible to prosecute those allegedly responsible for the crash. The accident occurred at 1.10 am at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Banun, near Tasik Banding, when the chartered bus carrying UPSI students overturned after colliding with the rear of a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). The bus, carrying 42 students aged 21 to 23 returning to campus after the Aidiladha holidays, departed from Jerteh, Terengganu, at 9 pm last night. Thirteen victims died at the scene, and two succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Post-mortems for 13 bodies are being conducted at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, while two are at Gerik Hospital. The MPV, carrying a family of four including two children, veered off the road, resulting in minor injuries. Police have yet to identify all victims, including the 15 deceased, as post-mortem processes are ongoing, and are investigating technical aspects, human negligence, the driver's records and also if the road's dark, winding and downhill conditions contributed to the crash. The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) will provide RM2,000 initial aid and RM1,000 disaster relief to victims' families to ease the burden, including funeral arrangements.
