New Viking displays bring Orkney's Norse past to life
Designed to share and celebrate the region's Norse heritage, the exhibition has been supported by a generous legacy donation from a former Orkney resident who emigrated to Australia, who left an express wish for his donation to be used to support Viking heritage and history.
'This exhibition not only brings history to life but also reconnects our community with its Viking past,' said Nick Hewitt, Team Leader (Culture) at Orkney Islands Council.
'We've worked closely with local craftspeople, historians, and experts to create something truly special - something that belongs to the people of Orkney.'

A key feature of the exhibition is Ragna, an interactive AI-powered Viking woman, offering a first-of-its-kind experience in museums.
Visitors can ask Ragna about Viking life in Orkney, bringing historical storytelling to life in a way that museums have been unable to do up until now. Her background story has been written by Tom Muir, local storyteller and Exhibitions Officer at The Orkney Museum for years, and Dr Siobhan Cooke-Miller, Archaeology Curator for the Council.
Dr Siobhan Cooke-Miller said: 'Our Viking and Norse past has shaped Orkney's identity and has had a lasting impact on our islands which we can see in our landscape, place-names, language and our rich heritage.
"For the people of Orkney, and the thousands of visitors who come to the islands every year, the artefacts and the world class experience made possible by James Groundwater's gift offer an unparalleled and tangible window to our Viking past and the people in a way that transcends the passage of time and brings it to life.'
Other highlights include rotating displays of artefacts from the National Museum of Scotland and Orkney's own collection as well as new interpretation panels and multimedia experiences, providing fresh perspectives on Orkney's Norse history.

Councillor Gwenda Shearer, Chair of the committee responsible for the Council's Culture Services said: 'This is a once-in-a-generation overhaul of galleries showcasing one of the most intriguing aspects of our heritage, made possible only by an incredibly generous bequeath.
'We hope everyone will come and see the results of this amazing gift to the people of Orkney.
'Our Culture Services team have sought to incorporate some of the latest understandings and display technology into the new galleries and we're counting down to the time when all can be revealed!'
The new exhibition at Orkney Museum opens on Saturday, May 10.
To celebrate the exhibition's opening, the museum is hosting special guided walk through tours and Q&A sessions with members of The Orkney Museums team.

Boyata has been selected to play for the Socceroof team and Barker will represent Wrexham Red Dragons, despite never playing for Wrexham A.F.C in his career. More info An Edinburgh pub is launching the city's 'first Guinness garden' with a self-pour machine. Malones in Leith is offering free pints to 50 of the first customers through the door on June 6 to celebrate, from 3pm. The 'lively' terrace is decorated with Guinness inspired planters and promises a 'laid-back vibe'. A new summer sun spot for the area, their self-pour machine claims to be the first of its kind in the city, allowing punters to pour their own perfect pint. Malones Leith General Manager Charlie Douglas, said: "This is a game-changer for Guinness lovers. It's all about the experience - pulling your own pint and enjoying it in the sunshine with friends." The garden will be open from 10pm throughout the summer, and opens just in time for the jazz festival. Edinburgh star Chloe Pirrie's life away from Dept.Q from romances to Hollywood ties

More info Chloe Pirrie, the Scottish actress recognised for her roles in The Queen's Gambit and The Crown, is relishing working back in Edinburgh where she's been filming for the past six months for Netflix's new detective series, Dept. Q. Playing the character of solicitor Merritt Lingard and working along a stellar cast with Matthew Goode at the helm, she joins fellow Scots Jamie Sives, Mark Bonnar and Shirley Henderson. This homecoming project, led by Scott Frank who previously worked with Pirrie on The Queen's Gambit, has brought her not only to familiar grounds but also allowed for a reunion with Kelly Macdonald, with whom she starred in The Victim. Reflecting on being back in her hometown, Pirrie shared how meaningful it was saying: "I've got family there that I hadn't seen for a while so it was great to be able to spend time with them. A family member came to set - I've never had that before. That kind of stuff is really special." (Image: PA) Her journey into acting took off from her school days at Mary Erskine School, where after playing Anja in 'The Cherry Orchard', she began considering acting as a serious career path, reports the Express. Her acting journey began with a role in the Royal National Theatre's 2010 production of Men Should Weep, followed by appearances in the short film Solstice and the television soap Doctors. Her breakthrough came in 2012 with the Scottish film Shell, which earned her the Most Promising Newcomer award at the 2013 British Independent Film Awards. In 2013, she also appeared in an episode of Black Mirror titled The Waldo Moment, playing a politician. Her career took a significant turn in 2014 when she appeared in the BBC spy thriller 'The Game' as an MI5 secretary, acting alongside Brian Cox.
