Mayor inaugurates Keamari Fish Food Street
The project is a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation initiative designed to offer a distinctive recreational area for residents. The launch event was attended by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, Sindh Assembly members Asif Khan and Liaquat Askani, and other officials.
Addressing the attendees, Mayor Wahab described the Fish Food Street as a new hub for entertainment and dining. Decorated with vibrant umbrellas and lights, the space aims to attract both residents and visitors. The street features diverse food options, including seafood, barbeque, and traditional fare, with comfortable seating arrangements for families.
Mayor Wahab detailed the extensive development work undertaken, including paving, tiling, installation of Victorian-style poles, sewerage lines, entrance gates, patchwork, and kerb stones. Beautification efforts and the addition of colorful umbrellas further enhance the area's appeal.
The mayor emphasized that this venture, fulfilling a long-standing community desire, provides a modern and unique space where aesthetics and convenience blend. He stated that such endeavours would continue to improve Karachi's appeal and offer better amenities to its inhabitants.
Mayor Wahab attributed the project's realization to the Pakistan Peoples Party's leadership and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's vision, highlighting the ongoing development work across Karachi. He contrasted this with previous administrations, alleging unfulfilled promises and ineffective slogans of change.
He further announced the redirection of heavy traffic away from the city centre through Shahrah-e-Bhutto to Kathore, with the Kathore segment to be inaugurated by Chairman Bhutto Zardari on December 31, 2025. He also mentioned the restoration of key bridges like Native Jetty, Jinnah, and ICI under the PPP's leadership.
In line with Independence Day celebrations, Mayor Wahab revealed plans for a new canal from Hub Dam, set for completion within ten months and inauguration on August 14, 2025. This 100 MGD canal will supplement Karachi's water supply, particularly benefiting western districts and Keamari.
Other developments include the TP-3 sewage treatment plant in Mauripur to support local fishermen, a new SICVD satellite centre in Baldia Town for cardiac care, and two substantial sports complexes in Mauripur and Baldia. Mayor Wahab affirmed his commitment to Karachi, highlighting its diverse population and lamenting the divisive mindset that has hindered the city's progress. He criticized the federal government's neglect of Keamari, while emphasizing his own dedication to the area's development.

Lawmakers award themselves hefty pay, perks increase
The Sindh Assembly on Friday passed three pieces of legislation, including a bill increasing the salaries and privileges of its members, the Sindh Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Anti-Terrorism Sindh (Amendment) Bill 2025. The bills were moved by Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ziaul Hassan Lanjar during a session chaired by Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah. The House unanimously approved the salary and allowances bill, which was earlier cleared by the provincial cabinet on August 7. The new law equalises privileges for MPAs — both from government and opposition — covering hospitality, house rent, utilities, daily and conveyance allowances, accommodation, travel and mileage, telephone and medical facilities, as well as office maintenance. The leader of the opposition will now receive the same salary and perks as a provincial minister. Parliamentary committee chairpersons will be entitled to use an official vehicle — with fuel and maintenance — but must return it within three days of vacating the post. The Sindh Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Amendment) Bill 2025, passed by a majority vote, allows the appointment of BPS-20 and 21 officers as chairpersons of education boards. Lanjar said the move aimed to induct competent officers for better board performance. MQM-Pakistan's Sabir Qaimkhani, however, called for sending the bill to the relevant committee for further deliberation to safeguard board autonomy - a suggestion that was rejected by the House. The assembly also adopted the Anti-Terrorism Sindh (Amendment) Bill 2025. Details of the changes were not immediately debated on the floor. Speaker Shah announced that a special sitting will be held on August 11 at the old assembly building to mark Minority Day, with representatives of minority communities invited to participate. A privilege motion by MQM-Pakistan's Ammar Siddiqui on gas supply issues was rejected on technical grounds. During the question hour for the Auqaf Department, Parliamentary Secretary Shazia Sanghar replied to written and supplementary questions from members.

Over 90 illegal housing schemes operating in Hyd
As many as 137 housing schemes were operating illegally in Hyderabad but the builders and developers of some 43 of them have so far fulfilled formalities to secure the official approvals while the rest are still unauthorised. The Sindh Assembly's Public Accounts Committee, which held a hearing in Karachi on Thursday, directed Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA) to take action against all those 94 schemes. The PAC's chairman Nisar Ahmed Khuhro also expressed dismay over delay in collection of around Rs2.5 billion dues from the builders. He asked the HDA's Director General Asghar Ali Ghangro to immediately issue notices for payment of the dues failing which the authority should seal offices of the delinquent builders. Khuhro told Ghangro not to show any leniency. Ghangro briefed the PAC that around 137 schemes were allotting plots and built up properties without securing the necessary approvals. However, some 43 builders and sponsors after meeting the requirements regularised their projects. A majority of the housing schemes in Hyderabad launch booking of the plots and built-up residential units without securing water supply and drainage NOCs. Although, water is mostly made available to such schemes, the drainage from such projects often ends up in the rivers, canals and distributaries. A good number of new housing projects are fast replacing the once agricultural fields along Hyderabad bypass road. But these schemes also lack connectivity with the city's drainage network.

Independence Day: Special events being organised across Sindh: Sharjeel
KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon said that the entire nation should celebrate the historic defeat inflicted on the enemy by the Pakistani armed forces in a grand manner, as only the older generations had witnessed the wars of the past, while the current younger generation has, for the first time, seen its Air Force, Army, Navy, and the entire nation united in a spectacular victory. Speaking in the Provincial Assembly, Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Memon said that, in this spirit, special events are being organized at the district level across Sindh, including sports competitions, women's walks, musical performances, fireworks, and other colorful programs. A special Independence Day ceremony was held at the Quaid-e-Azam's mausoleum with the participation of the Sindh Chief Minister, cabinet members, and special children, while August 11 was observed as a dedicated day for minorities.
