T'puram:
Veena Vijayan
, daughter of chief minister
Pinarayi Vijayan
, denied reports that she gave a statement before the serious fraud investigation office (
SFIO
) about receiving money from Cochin Minerals and Rutiles Limited (
CMRL
) without providing any services to them.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Veena said, "The claim that I gave a statement to the SFIO about receiving money from CMRL without providing services is completely false. It has come to my attention that such news is being widely circulated. I have not given any statement as some are currently spreading. It is true that I gave a statement before the investigating officer, and it was recorded by them. However, neither I nor
Exalogic Solutions
(the company owned by Veena) made any statement about receiving money from CMRL without providing services. I reiterate that such claims are baseless."
According to certain media reports, the SFIO chargesheet states that Veena admitted before the SFIO investigation team that she did not provide any services to CMRL. More details from Veena's statement in the chargesheet have emerged. It was reported that Veena allegedly diverted funds from CMRL to clear a private debt.
Meanwhile, the SFIO transferred the CMRL-Exalogic monthly pay-off case to central agencies. The investigation details were shared with the National Financial Reporting Authority, Reserve Bank of India, Central Economic Intelligence Bureau, and National Company Law Tribunal.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited commissions consultancy for major corridor extensions

CHENNAI: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has initiated consultancy contracts to develop Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for two significant extensions aimed at expanding the city's metro network. The first project focuses on a roughly 7-kilometre extension of Corridor 4, stretching from Lighthouse to the High Court. This expansion is expected to enhance connectivity along the Marina Beach and provide improved access to key government offices, including the Secretariat. The extension aims to cater to daily commuters as well as tourists, addressing the growing demand for seamless transit options in Chennai's densely populated areas. Meanwhile, the second project envisions a new 21-kilometre corridor linking Tambaram, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, and Velachery with Guindy Metro Station on Corridor 1. Designed to integrate Chennai's southern suburbs with the existing network, this corridor promises enhanced multimodal connectivity at key hubs such as Tambaram, Medavakkam, Velachery, and Guindy, facilitating smoother transfers across transit modes. CMRL has appointed Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd to prepare the DPRs for both corridors, awarding contracts worth INR 38.2 lakh and INR 96.2 lakh for both the extensions respectively. The consultancy work is scheduled to be completed within 120 days. The agreements were formalised in a signing ceremony attended by M.A. Siddique, Managing Director of CMRL; T Archunan, Director (Projects); and Parveen Kumar, Senior Vice President at Systra MVA Consulting. The DPRs will conduct a comprehensive assessment covering alignment options, ridership projections, multimodal integration potential, and technical feasibility. These reports will form the critical groundwork for informed decision-making on project execution and funding, a release stated.

TN plans special purpose vehicle for co-working space project

Chennai: As more co-working spaces are being planned across the city, as part of the 'chief minister's project, the state govt has decided to create a special purpose vehicle (SPV), and a private company with a CEO to manage the spaces. The SPV will work independently from the govt to manage the daily work of the co-working spaces. Officials, who participated in the meeting involving the CMDA, special projects and urban development department, said the chief minister wanted to ensure that all the 30 planned centres functioned continuously, irrespective of which govt or bureaucrats are heading departments. "As of now, the lone co-working centre at Kolathur is being jointly managed by the CMDA and GCC. This is not sustainable in the long run, as officials may change, and coordination and funding issues may arise. Hence, the new SPV will directly be funded by the govt and will have its own executive powers to maintain the centres on the lines of CMRL, CUMTA, or Smart City," the official said. The move is set to roll out in a few months once the SPV is formed," he said, adding that a portal will be formed with job data and camp details too. He added that several professionals come to the co-working spaces, and whoever is willing to provide their work data voluntarily can benefit from the recruitment system. "Every day, about 100 people come to the centre in Kolathur, and the numbers will increase once all 29 centres are opened. The placement system will be free too as the SPV will merely coordinate with companies and start-ups," said Prakash. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). With air-conditioned trains, MRTS to be on a par with Metro Rail

After taking over the MRTS network, the Chennai Metro Rail plans to operate air-conditioned trains between Chennai Beach and Velachery. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has begun preliminary work, and will soon float bids for purchasing air-conditioned train sets for the MRTS network, and for upgrading the stations, sources said. Even if CMRL floats the tenders in a couple of months, it will take at least 18-24 months for the trains to be manufactured and delivered to the city, they added. The trains will likely be operated every seven minutes, and the signalling system will be switched to communications-based train control (the same system to be deployed in CMRL's phase II network), a source said. 'Significant overhaul' 'The State government feels that introducing air-conditioned coaches, improving the frequency, and revamping the stations will be a significant overhaul of the MRTS network, and enhance passenger comfort. The entire ecosystem will change, and monetising the spaces subsequently could fetch revenue. This will take a couple of years,' the source said. When asked if the fare structures would be revised, the sources said a decision would be taken later. Railways will continue to operate the network for two years. The fare structures will be finalised around the time the CMRL takes full control of the operations, the source said. Besides, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed between the Government of Tamil Nadu and Railways is getting ready. The first draft has been completed, and the initial round of discussion with the Railways is under way. If the consensus is reached soon, then, the MoU will be signed before the end of September, officials said. Many commuters are glad about the CMRL's takeover of MRTS, but want the fares to be reasonable. 'Lifts dysfunctional' S. Jayalakshmi, a resident of Adyar who frequently takes the MRTS trains, said, 'Most of us have had faced problems at the MRTS stations, which wear a dingy look. On many occasions, I have seen the lifts and escalators dysfunctional in some stations; the stations also stink sometimes, causing a lot of discomfort.' 'People are set to gain from upgrades such as air-conditioned trains and improved frequency. But the fares should be revised, keeping in mind the poor. Thousands of lower middle-class and the poor use the MRTS system. They can continue to travel if the fares are reasonable,' she added.
