FOUR-PLAY: $200 BETTING STRATEGY
RACE 1: 3YO BENCHMARK 70 (1410m)
$50 win EXIT (4) at $2
Short enough in a small field but won with authority last start at Sandown. Champion jockey Blake Shinn has stuck with the three-year-old Bivouac filly, who could be aimed at much richer targets in the spring. She toyed with opposition last start, sat off them and bolted clear to win by 1¼ lengths. Respect CROSSBOW (2) coming down from Sydney after being runner-up the past two starts.
RACE 3: BENCHMARK 74 (1200m)
$50 win DE BERGERAC (6) at $3.30
Did everything but win last start at Flemington, when collared late by the surging La Fracas. The five-year-old Zoustar gelding, trained by Grahame Begg, could more than make amend here down in grade. Carried weight well in the past, so going from 52.5kg in stronger grade to 58kg on Saturday (after 2kg claim for apprentice Tom Prebble) should not pose an issue. De Bergerac won with 61kg fresh then placed third behind La Fracas two back with 59.5kg. Include SHAIME (14) in exotics.
RACE 5: BENCHMARK 78 (2000m)
$25 each-way AZTEC STATE (1) at $5.50/$1.95
Super win first-up at Sandown after a long break, produced a three-length romp. Entitled to experience a case of second-up blues last start but raced well again, set a task back in the field but worked home nicely to run fifth in a 1700m Benchmark 84. Down in class, up in distance looks an ideal recipe for success with rising star Tasmanian apprentice jockey Jackson Radley in the saddle. Wary of favourite FEDERER (14).
RACE 7: GROUP 3 AURIE'S STAR HANDICAP (1200m)
$50 win SPLASH BACK (11) at $2.50
Produced arguably the most visually impressive performance of the winter carnival, with an astonishing turn of foot to win last start at Flemington. Going for three on the bounce after a brilliant first-up win at Caulfield and more than capable. Quiet jumpout between Flemington runs has Splash Back primed to make a statement on Saturday. First time down the straight but the five-year-old mare looks more than capable.

QUADZILLA
LEG 1 - RACE 6
ZOU SENSATION (8) showed rivals a clean pair of plate last start at Caulfield and runner-up El Rocko has won since to frank the form line. The six-year-old gelding could be aimed up at a Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) in the spring so this should be a nice audition. RUN HARRY RUN (4) has raced solidly without much success, touched off two back. MUNHAMEK (2) a definite threat.
1ST LEG 2, 4, 8
LEG 2 - RACE 7
SPLASH BACK (11) the one to beat bar none. Going for a hat-trick of wins for the campaign and more to give going forward. First look at the straight but the mare should be too good. Sydney raider KING OF ROSEAU (10) has raced well up north and must be respected. MARBLE NINE (2) has sights on a double hat-trick and must also be included. Will be up on speed and hard to run down.
2ND LEG 2, 10, 11
LEG - RACE 8
TOO DARN DISCREET (15) has won second-up previously and could do so again. Talented mare with plenty of upside. HARD TO CROSS (3) has slipped under the radar potentially, has yet to trouble scorer at Flemington but six-time 1600m winner. Include. ONE LONG DAY (11) has been a model of consistency, won four of nine and placed on four occasions. OUTTA COMPTON (5) and EL SOLEADO (1) around the mark again.
3RD LEG 1, 3, 5, 11, 15
LEG 4 - RACE 9
ILLYIVY (9) is due to run second based on pattern – 2121 – the past four starts but mare in form and racing in great heart, must be seriously considered a winning chance. STYLISH (1) has also raced well this campaign and now has Blake Shinn engaged to ride, the champion jockey piloted the mare in a recent jumpout. VIENNA VIXEN (7) next best.
FOURTH LEG 1, 7, 9
COST $100 FOR 74%
SKINNY QUADDIE
Start with MUNHAMEK (2) and ZOU SENSATION (8). In the second leg take SPLASH BACK (11) one out. Then in the third leg take HARD TO CROSS (3), ONE LONG DAY (11) and TOO DARN DISCREET (15). Come home with STYLISH (1) and ILLYIVY (9).
1ST LEG: 2, 8
3ND LEG: 11
3RD LEG: 3, 11, 15
4TH LEG: 1, 9
COST $100 FOR 833%

Simon Goodwin sacked by Melbourne Demons after weeks of turmoil
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Former Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says he is 'disappointed' after he was sacked by the Demons on Monday night in a turn of events few saw coming. The axe was swung so quickly that the playing group was not even made aware of the news before it was leaked through the press on Tuesday morning. The premiership winning coach had a checkered past while in charge which saw him hit with allegations of inappropriate conduct along with accusations he used 'illicit substances'. Goodwin was contracted through to the end of the 2026 season, however, the club determined they wanted a change made instantly. According to Code Sports, he will receive a one-million dollar payout as part of the contract termination. The 48-year-old coach and club president Brad Green fronted a media conference on Tuesday afternoon. Never miss the latest sports news from Australia and around the world — download the app direct to your phone. Goodwin, who led the club to its first premiership in 57 years, said: 'I'm disappointed because I think we're a hell of a lot closer to turning our club and team back into a contender again than what people think. 'I'm disappointed I won't be able to work with this great bunch of players I know we've developed and spent a lot of time developing.' He confirmed he was given the offer of coaching through to the end of the season, but rejected the deal. Green said assistant coach Troy Chaplin will step in as caretaker coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. Goodwin 'got it wrong' behind the scenes Goodwin had found himself on an increasingly hot seat with the Demons languishing in the lower half of the ladder with a 7-13 record. But most would have assumed his job was safe coming off an 83-point win over the Eagles on Saturday. Despite all the growing noise, Goodwin was adamant he had the backing of the board in the wake of the club's historic loss to St Kilda two weeks ago. 'I feel incredibly supported by the board,' he said at the time. He said with a smile on Tuesday that he 'obviously got that wrong'. Green said players were 'hurting' after hearing the news. 'I spoke to the playing group an hour ago. They're obviously disappointed,' he said. 'I've been in that position. I was a player. It's tough. They would be hurting. Simon's a premiership coach. He's a terrific person. They have the utmost respect for Simon.' Coach cuts off boss in middle of conference Goodwin had reporters laughing when he cut Green off as the president was responding to a question. The veteran coach leaned backwards in his chair and grimaced when Green was asked bluntly if the Round 20 loss to the Saints was the reason Goodwin had been sacked. As Green began his response, Goodwin, in mock anguish said, 'Bloody Nasiah, hey'. Saints star Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera was unstoppable in the Saints' extraordinary comeback win and kicked the match-winning goal. Green eventually said: 'That didn't have any bearing on the outcome, no'. Goodwin said he was not blindsided, despite the huge win over the Eagles just a few days ago. 'I did mention to Gawny (captain Max Gawn) I don't think any coach has been sacked after an 83 point win,' he said. Club legend 'absolutely stunned' Club great Garry Lyon was 'shocked' to learn of Goodwin's axing after being informed live on air Tuesday morning. 'I'm stunned, shocked, totally shocked,' Lyon said on SEN Breakfast. 'I had no heads up on this whatsoever. Absolutely just shocked, I can't get my head around it. 'He won't be coaching a farewell game, that's something I can promise you.' Lyon believed a call on Goodwin's future wouldn't be made until the end of the season before praising Goodwin as a hero for guiding the club to a drought-breaking premiership. 'I'm absolutely stunned. I thought there would be a long review at the end of this year and then determine whether he would coach out his final year,' he added. 'Premiership coaches are pretty rare at the Melbourne footy club. He's one of four. 'He will be a hero of this football club forever and a day, but that obviously doesn't guarantee your tenure. 'This is a massive call.' The club are facing an uncertain offseason with several star players finding themselves in swirling trade rumours. Clayton Oliver was reportedly halfway out the door at the end of the 2024 season and is expected to once again find himself in the thick of trade talks. Fellow midfield superstar Christian Petracca also contemplated a trade away from the club last season before ultimately staying put. But with another lacklustre season in the books, rumours are already ramping up that the 29-year-old could be eyeing off greener pastures. 'Is the writing on the wall for Christian Petracca at Melbourne?,' Jay Clark posed on Fox Footy's The First Crack. 'It doesn't feel like there's a (trade) market for Clayton Oliver at the moment and Jack Viney is a Demon for life. Petracca is the one who has been frozen out. 'Can he accept he could be more of a permanent forward at Melbourne as the new era settles in? Like Toby Greene. Or does he at 29 years of age still think he can be that superstar on-baller? 'Because if he does, maybe that has to be at another club. We talked a lot about Collingwood and Carlton last year, is the best fit for him Hawthorn?' Melbourne will finish the 2025 season with games against the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Collingwood. The club has yet to announce who will take over as caretaker coach for the remaining games. TIMELINE OF SIMON GOODWIN OFF-FIELD ISSUES - February 2021: Melbourne directors hold discussions with AFL leaders including former chief executive Gillon McLachlan and chairman Richard Goyder about concerns over Goodwin's conduct and club culture. Goodwin denies accusations he used 'illicit substances'. - Mixed reports from 2018 to 2021 detail allegations that Goodwin engaged in off field misconduct including drinking and gambling with players. He is also accused of inappropriate behaviour while drinking with players at a pub on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula. February 2022: It is revealed via legal documents that in 2020 Goodwin had an X rated rant towards Dr Zeeshan Arain over concussion management involving Angus Brayshaw. Dr Arain was reportedly sacked in October 2020 days after lodging concerns with CEO Gary Pert over the club's culture. It's believed he received six-figure payout for his legal claims of alleged bullying incidents involving Goodwin. October 2023: Goodwin again denies he has any off-field behavioural issues. Clayton Oliver is accused of bending windscreen wipers on parked cars and it is seen as further evidence of a poor culture at the club. March 2024: Independent MP Andrew Wilkie uses parliamentary privilege to make accusations of serious misconduct against the AFL and the Melbourne Demons. Arain gives testimony the AFL conducted illicit drug tests to help players avoid being detected on game days. July 2025: After spiralling down the AFL ladder and with serious concern superstar Christian Petracca may request to leave the club, the Demons' board of directors consider terminating Goodwin's contract. Taipans lure McVeigh as new marquee man
Jack McVeigh will return from his NBA stint with the Cairns Taipans in a major boost for the NBL's reigning wooden spooners. The sharp-shooting Australian forward made his NBA debut with the Houston Rockets in November after a career-best 2023/24 NBL season with the Tasmania JackJumpers ended in a championship ring. The JackJumpers had retained McVeigh's contract rights in the event of a return from the NBA but agreed to the 29-year-old's request for a release from the final year of his contract on Monday. A day later, the Taipans announced McVeigh had signed a one-year deal containing a mutual option for a second season. While the NBL has not yet ratified McVeigh's contract, there is no suggestion his move to the Taipans will be blocked. The forward becomes the Taipans' highest-profile local player since Nathan Jawai and signals optimism in North Queensland following two seasons towards the foot of the ladder. "I know that the club were aiming for a marquee-type signing throughout the off-season and knowing that it was a real possibility changed everything about the type of roster we could build," said coach Adam Forde."I couldn't be happier that it's Jack." McVeigh played nine NBA games for the Rockets and 35 for G-League affiliate the Rio Grande Vipers during his brief American foray. He was named the 2024 grand final MVP in his last season with the JackJumpers, memorably hitting a half-court shot that won game three and put the Tasmanian side up 2-1 in the best-of-five series. McVeigh also represented Australia at 2024 Paris Olympics, where the underwhelming Boomers bowed out in the quarter-finals. The forward is the Taipans' first new arrival for the 2025/26 season and joins Sam Waardenburg, Alex Higgins-Titsha, Kyrin Galloway, Kyle Adnam and Kody Stattmann on the roster.
