First, they should contact 811 by calling or going to MissUtility.net at least three business days before the project begins, regardless of the size or depth of the work. Planning ahead is crucial; submitting a free 811 request early in the week is recommended for weekend projects to allow sufficient time for marking. Homeowners should confirm that all utility lines are marked before starting work.
If necessary, homeowners should adjust their project plans to avoid marked utility lines. It is also essential to verify that any hired contractors have contacted 811 and requested utility markings before commencing work.

Columbia Gas launches new grant for Ohio safety programs
COLUMBUS — Columbia Gas of Ohio is rolling out a new grant program aimed at boosting public safety education and first responder training. The program is scheduled to open applications on Aug. 8 and is designed to support initiatives that align with Columbia Cares' safety and basic needs priorities, according to a community announcement. Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status are eligible to apply for grants ranging from $500 to $5,000. Grants are one-time stipends with potential for annual renewal. Applications will be accepted through the YourCause platform through Aug. 29. Expect a power outage Aug. 13 in Boyne City as Consumers Energy updates equipment
Consumers Energy is expected to temporarily interrupt power for about 2,000 homes and businesses in Boyne City as it upgrades equipment. According to a community announcement, the planned outage is scheduled from 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13 until as late as 7 a.m. the next day. The work is part of Consumers Energy's Reliability Roadmap, which aims to reduce the number and length of power outages in Michigan.
