They managed to put together a solid stretch, putting them at the top spot in the American League West. Advertisement Entering June, though, it's a whole different story. Seattle has lost 10 of its last 15 games, seeing players who got off to a hot start slow down. That's not the case for Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, though. The "Big Dumper" continues to club home runs left and right. Raleigh socked his 24th homer this season in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at T-Mobile Park. That number leads all MLB sluggers. What gives with the recent slump? Even Raleigh is looking for answers himself. 'We've got to turn the page,' Raleigh said on Thursday, reported. 'We've got to create our own luck and can't wait around. I think that's the big thing I want to see in the next couple games is kind of creating our own luck, creating our own kind of chaos on the bases and and things like that — and not just waiting for that home run or that one hit. So I think that's kind of how we've got to push the envelope, in my mind.' Cal Raleigh has been a one-man wrecking crew for the Mariners Over the past 15 games, Seattle is 5-10. But the story lies in the numbers and Raleigh, for his part, has been carrying the Mariners on his broad shoulders. Take a look at these statistics. Since May 10, Raleigh has been hitting at a .345 clip with nine homers and an OPS of 1.286. Advertisement How about his teammates? Well, that's a totally different story. They have combined for a .214 average with nine combined homers and a .581 OPS. That's not a winning combination at all. Seattle needs more contributions from the rest of the 40-man roster if they're going to reclaim their AL West leadership. The Houston Astros hold a 1.5-game lead over Seattle entering Friday. The Astros finished off a series win against the Pittsburgh Pirates late Thursday night, winning 8-2. It's a familiar spot for Seattle, looking up at the Astros in the No. 1 spot in the division. 'We're getting guys on, but you've got to take advantage of it, right?' Raleigh said. 'I mean, it's kind of the name of the game. We've just got to find a way to get those runs across like we were early in the year. Advertisement "Sometimes, it's not always going to be from the swing," he said. "You've got to get a bunt. You've got to steal bases, kind of like what we're doing earlier — creating some traffic that way. So it's not taking two, three singles to get the job done." Seattle has plenty of season left to right its wrongs. The Mariners, though, probably need to start picking up the pace as the long, hot summer hits MLB teams. Porter Martone / Plenty of signs point towards the Seattle Kraken using the eighth overall selection on a defenseman, but if they are looking to draft the best available, and Porter Martone was there at eight, they could be all over it. Martone was considered a top-three pick for most of the season, but as the draft inches closer and the teams inside the top 10 are looking to solidify the center ice position, Martone has seen his name occasionally fall, although he's still expected to land inside the top five. Playing in the OHL with the Brampton Steelheads, the 18-year-old scored 37 goals and 98 points in 57 games, forming a formidable duo with Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf. Martone also played on Canada's World Junior team, scoring one goal in three games and for Canada's World Championship team, failing to record a point in the two games he played. The Peterborough, ON native, is known as a power forward, willing to mix it up physically and be a disruptive forward. With the puck, Martone is a playmaker. "While Martone is known as a power forward, it's more accurate to describe him as a playmaker. The patterns of the game seem imprinted in his mind. Constantly scanning the ice and knowing his teammates' tendencies, system's rotations, and the expected movements of defenders, he stays connected with linemates, avoids coverage, and puts himself in advantageous spots to make the next play. If the Kraken elected to draft Martone, he would be a perfect linemate for any of Shane Wright, Matty Beniers or Berkly Catton. Familiar faces make visit to Seahawks OTAs
OTAs represent a great opportunity for old coaches and familiar faces to visit previous stomping grounds. The Seattle Seahawks hosted a pair of intriguing retired coaches on visits at Thursday's OTA practice. Gary Kubiak and Jim Zorn were both in attendance, according to photos captured by Bob Condotta. The legendary Kubiak officially retired from coaching in 2021 after 29 successful years in the profession. He never coached for the Seahawks, but his son Klint Kubiak is the team's new offensive coordinator and play-caller. The elder Kubiak was likely checking in with how his son is acclimating to his new surroundings. Advertisement The Kubiak's coached together with the Denver Broncos in 2016. They reunited with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 for two seasons (through 2020). Klint Kubiak has since flourished, climbing the coaching ladder before landing in Seattle as OC earlier this offseason. The 72-year-old Zorn was a star quarterback for the Seahawks from 1976 to 1984, establishing a legendary connection with franchise legend Steve Largent. Zorn was inducted into the team's Ring of Honor in 1991. He later had two separate coaching stints with the Seahawks, first as an offensive assistant in 1997, and then as quarterbacks coach from 2001 to 2007.
