Pearson shade Marlow in schools rugby thriller
The first half was marked by the visiting Gqeberha team snapping up every chance which came their way to run in three tries and establish what looked like a commanding lead.
Pouncing on every Marlow mistake, Denilo Jordaan, Matthew Els and Sipho Myataza scored tries for Pearson, with Keano Beling adding two conversions.
An indication of the run of play in the first half came when Marlow were on the attack in the Pearson 22, but an interception saw the visitors sprint away for a try at the other end of the field.
It was to Marlow ' s credit that they never gave up the fight, showing the competitive edge for which they are well known.
As their forwards began to dominate up front, they came back into the game, with several powerful driving mauls putting Pearson on the back foot.
They also started to take control of the scrums and were able to build the momentum which allowed them to put multiple phases together to go constantly on the attack.
Flyhalf Cole Hurter capitalised on the greater share of possession and some good tactical kicking saw Marlow beginning to spend more time deep inside Pearson ' s territory.
His accurate boot played a significant role in Marlow ' s fightback, while flank Adrian Joubert was one of the standout forwards with a massive work rate.
Fullback Du Preez Vermaak (15) also started to threaten Pearson by finding and creating space on the counterattack from their kicks downfield.
Joubert crossed for two tries and others came from Vermaak and CJ Botha, while Hurter landed two conversions.
The home side levelled the score at 19-19 before Pearson fullback Jordaan, one of their outstanding players this season and a player who needs no second invitation to take a gap, took a quick tap from a penalty and outpaced the Marlow defence in a thrilling 70m dash for the line to score the winning try, converted by Beling.
That made it 26-19, but Marlow refused to go away.
They crossed for one more try, but the conversion flew wide and Pearson survived to win a memorable match between two gutsy outfits.
In other matches, Brandwag and Nico Malan had comfortable wins over DF Malherbe (109-0) and Daniel Pienaar (38-8), respectively, in Kariega. — Additional reporting by SuperSportschools.com

Chippa United dismantle technical team, three coaches sacked!
Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi is at it again, firing three members of his technical team after just one game. Interim coach Musa Nyatama, goalkeeper coach Thembalethu Moses and analyst Prinil Deen have all been sacked. This follows Chippa United's 4-1 loss to TS Galaxy on Tuesday where Nyatama led the team on the bench. The game also marked the first without Sinethemba Badela who left Chippa United after two games in charge as head coach. Reports suggest Badela and newly-appointed Sporting Director Sinesipho Mali had disagreements on the direction the team should take. As things stand, the Chilli Boys are placed 15th on the log with a single point from their opening three league matches. Meanwhile, former Free State Stars mentor Luc Eymael is reported to be the next coach to take over at the Gqeberha-based outfit. Proteas rally around Subrayen after bowler reported for 'chucking'
Prenelan Subrayen will undergo an independent test of his bowling action in Brisbane next week after he was reported for a suspect action during Tuesday's first ODI against Australia. Though Subrayen, who made his ODI debut in the Cairns match, is still allowed to play before the test, Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad confirmed on Thursday he will not be selected for the remaining two ODIs Down Under. 'We felt, with Subs, to create less noise, get him out of the public eye and make sure he's OK and focuses on this testing,' said Conrad. The International Cricket Council said on Wednesday match officials 'cited concerns about the legality' of Subrayen's action. According to Conrad, the officials flagged 12 deliveries from Subrayen during Tuesday's match. 'The process is to get him tested as soon as we possibly can. We're looking to do that in Brisbane, which suits everyone. We're going to the UK via Brisbane, so hopefully we get that done sooner rather than later.'

Springboks out to keep Wallabies at bay in Cape Town
When Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu fronts the media, his attacking prowess is more often than not the topic of conversation. However, in the lead-up to Saturday's Rugby Championship clash in Cape Town he had to front questions about how the Springboks would keep the Wallabies, with their tails up, at bay. The Boks failed to do so at Ellis Park last weekend as Joe Schmidt's team beat their opponents' rush defence, a hostile crowd, the altitude and the odds. They buried the Boks in a 14-minute blitz from which the much-fancied home team could not recover. The Wallabies' 38 points was their highest match-day tally against the Boks in 14 years. The Boks may have to perform what Aussie performer Rolf Harris described in his ditty Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport. 'We have a defensive system where we apply pressure on the opposition and sometimes you have to concede a few metres on the edges,' said Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who is among the substitutes for Saturday's Test 'It is something we know about and nothing new to us. We haven't focused on it too much. There were system errors leading up to these bridge passes that caught us in those positions, so those are things we looked at fixing.
