Man arrested in Rs 189 crore customs duty evasion case in Ludhiana
The accused had been absconding for more than a year. The accused was engaged in diversion of duty-free imported goods from the customs bonded warehouses through dummy proprietors of three firms, an official statement said here on Monday.
It said that according to the bonded warehouse licence conditions, the imported goods should have been used as raw material in the manufacturing of the export goods.
The entire fraudulent activity was carried out to evade import duties on imported goods by diverting the goods to the domestic market without payment of duty, which would otherwise be 100 per cent of the value of the imported goods.
'Total customs duty evaded is to the tune of Rs 189 crore. To fulfil export obligation, the accused, using firms owned by the dummy proprietors, attempted to export counterfeit and spurious goods manufactured from some extraneous materials other than the duty-free imported goods," it said.
The accused was produced before a court here on Sunday which granted the DRI his custody for further interrogation.
Investigation in the case is going on, it said. PTI SUN KSS KSS

City resident duped of Rs 6.67 lakh in online trading scam
Times News Network Chandigarh: The cyber cell of the UT Police filed a case against unknown persons for allegedly duping a city resident of Rs 6.6 lakh on the pretext of providing high returns on investment in online share trading. After taking the money, the fraudsters neither delivered profit nor returned the money. No arrest has been made in the case so far. Anil Parkash Dubey, 55, a resident of Sector 32, Chandigarh, said that he received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number on May 12. The caller claimed to represent a company involved in share market trading. After explaining the process, the caller sent a registration link on WhatsApp. Upon contacting the numbers he provided, the complainant was instructed to transfer funds. Initially, he "invested" Rs 10,000 and earned Rs 1,500 profit. Subsequently, he invested Rs 3 lakh. Later, he received a WhatsApp call requesting additional payment for IPO shares, leading to a further transfer of around Rs 3.6 lakh totalling around Rs 6.6 lakh. The accused told him to purchase shares worth Rs 44 lakh in the new IPO. They claimed that his previous IPO profits plus current holdings amounted to Rs 22 lakh and requested an additional Rs 22 lakh for share allocation. However, the victim refused to transfer more money and demanded the money he had invested with profit. However, the fraudsters kept asking for Rs 22 lakh more. At this point, Dubey realised that he had been conned and filed a complaint at the cyber police station. The complainant also provided transaction details and phone numbers of the suspects to the police. After verifying facts, police registered a case and are trailing the transactions made by the victim. MSID:: 122922527 413 |

Delhi saw 13 car theft cases daily in first half of 2025
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) The national capital recorded an average of 13 cases of car thefts per day in the first half of 2025, officials said on Saturday. However, Delhi also witnessed a decline in car theft cases in the first half of 2025 as compared to the same period last year. According to official police data, Between January 1 and July 15 this year, a total of 2,468 cases of car theft were registered across the national capital. During the corresponding period in 2024, the figure stood at 2,732, indicating a drop of nearly 10 per cent. Senior police officials attributed this decline to enhanced night patrolling, increased deployment of plainclothes teams in auto theft hotspots, and proactive intelligence gathering by Anti-Auto Theft Squads (AATS) in various districts. The intensified crackdown on organised vehicle lifting syndicates and surveillance measures, including the use of CCTV and analytics-based policing, have also played a role, officials said. Multiple cases involving interstate gangs involved in stealing luxury vehicles and transporting them to other states using fake number plates and master keys have been busted this year.
