What is the Amazon Fire HD 8?
Amazon is well-known for a number of reasons. It isn't just a go-to online retailer because of its competitive prices and quick delivery through Amazon Prime, it is also the company responsible for Kindle, along with some of the best budget tablets and best kids tablets on the market.
Amazon's tablets fall under the Fire brand, with the Fire HD 8 sitting in the middle of the portfolio. The Fire HD 8 (2024) is an 8-inch tablet with an HD display. It sits alongside the Fire HD 10, Fire Max 11 and the Fire 7 within Amazon's tablet range, which is considerably more affordable than the likes of Apple's iPad or Samsung's Galaxy Tabs.
The Fire HD 8 costs a penny shy of £100 with adverts, though you can pay £10 extra to have no adverts. There is also a specific Fire HD 8 Kids version of the device that comes with a child-friendly bumper case, six months of Amazon Kids+ and a two-year worry-free guarantee.
Is the Amazon Fire HD 8 a good buy if you're in the market for a tablet under £100?
How we test tablets
I've been reviewing consumer technology for 12 years and in that time, I've seen a broad range of tablets, from Apple and Samsung's premium offerings, to models from OnePlus, Lenovo and Amazon's budget-friendly options. When we test a tablet, we primarily consider five key testing metrics: design, display, performance, battery and software and AI. We also test cameras, but while the front camera is important for video calls, I would always recommend using your smartphone if you want the best image results.
Testing tablets is more than just numbers on a spreadsheet, however. We use each tablet we review for a long period, spending time watching movies, making notes and playing games to test battery life, processing power, software capabilities and screen quality. Sound performance and ease of use have been taken into account too and for Amazon's Fire HD 8 specifically, I have also tested the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids model.

Design: 7/10
The Amazon Fire HD 8 has a simple, no-thrills design but in some ways that's a good thing. There's no aluminium frame like you'll find on even Apple's entry-level iPad and there are no fancy inclusions like a stylus in the box as you'll find with many of Samsung's Galaxy Tabs either. You also won't find an official IP rating so you'll need to keep this tablet away from the beach, bath or swimming pools.
What you do get from the Fire HD 8's plastic design is a surprisingly solid build quality. It is basic, but there's a textured finish on the back that's tactile in the hand while offering a decent amount of grip and the 8-inch size is lovely and compact – something I said of the iPad mini 7 too. The edges of this tablet are also slightly curved, which makes a nice change from flat edges you'll find on the Galaxy Tab S10 series and Apple's iPads.
When held in a landscape orientation, there's a microSD slot on the bottom for storage expansion (something you will likely need), while speakers are positioned at the top. The power button, volume buttons and USB-C port for charging are all on the right edge, along with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Display: 7/10
The Amazon Fire HD 8 has an 8-inch display with an HD (1,280 x 800 pixel) resolution, which effectively leads to an average screen overall. It's an LCD panel so you don't get the same inky blacks and pops of colour that you do with an OLED panel, but you won't come across an OLED panel within the Fire HD 8's price bracket either. Even the iPad Air (M3) that costs five times the price of this tablet has an LCD panel.
The bezels around the display are thick, though this does give you somewhere to place your thumbs when watching content so their chunkiness can be somewhat forgiven. The brightness of the Fire HD 8 is also more than adequate for indoor use, though take it outside into the sunshine and you may notice some glare as there is no anti-reflective coating here.
Performance: 7/10
Just as the Fire HD 8's display is fairly average, so too is its performance. Amazon doubled the memory (RAM) for this model compared to its predecessor and the Fire HD 8 is capable enough of running day-to-day tasks, whether that's browsing the web through the Amazon Silk browser or controlling smart home devices through Alexa.
If you're looking for a tablet with slick performance however, you'll need to pay a little more as the Fire HD 8 doesn't deliver that. Apps can be slow to load, switching between tasks and profiles takes a couple of seconds and you might encounter the occasional freezing of an app too. All that said, the Fire HD 8 is a great tablet for streaming video content on the various streaming platforms and running casual games, you just need to be mindful of its limitations and I advise connecting up a pair of headphones over using the built-in speakers.
Battery life: 8/10
The Amazon Fire HD 8 does a decent job when it comes to battery life and while I didn't get the touted 13 hours during my testing, it lasted over 10 hours and sometimes 11 hours depending on what I was asking of it each day. That's certainly not bad and it will easily see you through a commute to and from work, or an evening watching content on the sofa, or browsing the web.
Where the Fire HD 8 could improve on the battery front is charging speeds. It's not surprising given its price but if you use the 5W adapter that's included in the box, it will take around 5 hours for this tablet to charge. It supports 15W wired charging so if you have a faster charger at home, you can halve the charging time. That's something you'll want to consider if you're expecting the same charging experience as you get with a smartphone.
Software and AI: 7/10
The Fire HD 8 runs Amazon's Fire OS, which is simple and easy enough to navigate but it's more restricted than iPadOS and Android tablets that offer access to the Google Play app store. Most of the streaming apps you might want are available, including Netflix and Disney+, but there are some apps missing like Google's Calendar and Chrome, neither of which are offered through Amazon's App Store and sometimes you'll find a slightly older version of an app compared to Android or Apple.
You will also encounter adverts and sponsored content on the lock screen if you haven't paid the extra £10 for the model without ads. If you're considering this tablet for a child however, the software allows for easy switching between adult and child profiles – something iPads don't – and the child profile locks everything down including available apps in the Amazon App Store. I would recommend choosing the specific Kids version however as the included case and Amazon Kids+ subscription makes it better value than buying those separately.
Technical specifications
I've compared the Amazon Fire HD 8 to the Fire HD 10 because there are a couple of differences between these two affordable tablets, other than size and cost that are worth considering when choosing one of Amazon's Fire tablets.
Telegraph verdict: 7/10
The Amazon Fire HD 8 is an excellent budget tablet that's great for playing casual games and watching content. The screen is average, performance is quite slow and Amazon's user interface isn't as good as Apple's iPadOS or native Android, but the design is solid and battery life is good.
The compact build makes it portable, while the Amazon App Store has most of the top streaming apps, a number of games and apps like the Kindle app. It's not the most powerful budget tablet around or the smoothest performer but as a day-to-day tablet, the Fire HD 8 is one of the best in its affordable price range and it's excellent value.

New Focus Friend app wants to help users reclaim their attention

Hank Green's new app, Focus Friend, has surged to the number one position on Apple's free app chart, outperforming ChatGPT, Google, and Threads. The app is an ADHD-friendly focus timer designed to help users reclaim their attention and gamify productivity by blocking distractions. It features a customizable 'bean' character that knits rewards when users stay focused, but drops its needles if attention is lost. Users can trade the bean's knitted items for decorations to customize its room, encouraging healthier screen time in a Tamagotchi-style format. Launched in July, the app's popularity exploded this week following increased social media promotion by Hank Green and his brother, John Green.

Apple Wellness boss behind iconic invention sickened underlings with leering and screaming, lawsuit alleges

An Apple executive has been accused of harboring a 'toxic work environment' by a slew of employees. Fitness guru Jay Blahnik masterminded the company's fitness subscriptions while berating and harassing his employees, according to nine current and former workers. Blahnik, the company's Vice President of Fitness Technologies, was verbally abusive, manipulative and inappropriate towards them, they claim. The group spoke with The New York Times, saying his behavior forced over 10 colleagues to seek out extended periods of medical absence. The report claims that Apple set out to protect Blahnik after employees confronted higher ups with his alleged behavior via an investigation. The company had settled with one complaint accusing him of sexual harassment and are still in litigation with employee Mandana Mofidi, 41. According to Mofidi, Blahnik bullied her. Blahnik however was cleared by an internal investigation that found no evidence of wrongdoing, according to Mofidi's lawsuit. The employees said the company sought to protect a well known face and star exec rather than address their concerns. Blahnik also became known as the creator of the Apple Watch's signature fitness feature, three circular bands indicating what a person should complete throughout the day Kayla Desautels told the outlet: 'At the end of the day, we don't matter', she left last year after a period of time off due to her mental health. According to Desautels, she had 'never worked anywhere more toxic' than alongside Blahnik. In a legal filing seen by the outlet, Apple has denied that there had been any type of harassment or harm on Blahnik's behalf. It added that Mofidi had 'received constructive feedback and coaching from her supervisors in response to a history of unresolved performance issues.' According to the employees who spoke with the outlet, Blahnik was prone to making inappropriate comments. At a meeting with Olympic skier Ted Ligety, it is alleged that he joked with employees about sleeping with the skier, two people told the outlet. Mofidi, who was not involved with that particular project, was told he that Blahnik had suggested a member of the team got Ligety on board after offering him a massage. It is also claimed that he would speak about the breasts and rear ends of trainers filming workouts for the subscription. He is also alleged to have said in front of other employees that the wife of one of the managers must have had an affair because their son had a different hair color. The employees who mentioned this comment, including Mofidi, said that he used a 'vulgar' remark when doing so. Blahnik would also compliment the way creative director Wil Tidman dressed, and joked that he was having an affair with a male producer, employees claimed. Tidman told employees that in the summer of 2022 Blahnik had text him something that he considered 'inappropriate and unsettling'. It is unclear what the text said. Not long after that message, Tidman went on medical leave, according to Mofidi's lawsuit. Tidman lawyered up and raised an allegation of harassment. According to the outlet he didn't file a suit but reached a settlement with Apple over the text. Mofidi had joined Apple in 2021 to take charge over its audio efforts, Blahnik noted in her first review that her first year was marked with 'significant achievement', her suit says. In that review Mofidi raised concerns that she had received less of a pay rise than her male colleagues, her lawsuit claims. The next day she was pulled in to speak with investigators to determine if Blahnik had harassed Tidman, she claims. She excused herself, telling the Times: 'I was aware of his behavior, his vindictiveness. I was nervous.' Mofidi claims he then later started shouting at her while on a call with a freelancer, which she said started 'this whole campaign'. Following this, Mofidi claims people working closely with Blahnik started criticizing her in emails, she claims this was an effort to create a record and have her sacked. She added: 'The whole experience was incredibly isolating, humiliating - honestly, scary.' In April 2023 she was given an ultimatum, she could take a buyout or work on her performance, the lawsuit said. She then approached the HR division in the company claiming she had been targeted after raising concerns about unequal pay. As HR investigated, Mofidi said she was told she would not be harassed further but the retaliation continued. She was put on medical leave after suffering from anxiety and depression, her suit said. After her leave ended she asked to be moved department which was knocked back, leading her to resign. She is to go on trial over her suit in 2027. According to the Obama Foundation, Blahnik and his husband Ryan pledged between $100,000 to $249,999 to the organization. The couple reside in a Santa Monica townhouse worth just under $4 million dollars, according to property records. Blahnik became known as the creator of the Apple Watch's signature fitness feature, three circular bands indicating what a person should complete throughout the day. Besides his work with Apple, he had previously helped launch the Nike Training Club and also consulted for ritzy gym Equinox known for its celebrity clientele. In a statement to Daily Mail, an Apple spokesperson said: 'We strongly disagree with the premise of this story and there are many inaccurate claims and mischaracterizations. 'We are and have always been deeply committed to creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive workplace. 'We take all concerns seriously and we thoroughly investigate whenever a concern is raised and, out of respect for the privacy of any individuals involved, we do not discuss specific employee matters. We will continue to share the facts through the legal process.'

Home office working has become the new normal over the past few years, but kitting out your study with high quality equipment can be a serious drain on the wallet. Yet luckily for those who work from home, one top-rated printer is currently on a huge £41.80 discount on Amazon. Alternative options for printers include the HP Envy 6120e Wireless Photo Printer which is currently on offer for £59.99 at Argos. Or, the Canon PIXMA TR4755i Wireless Inkjet Printer selling on Argos for £44.99. But customers adore the discounted Brother printer on Amazon, and it has raked in an impressive rating of 4.3 stars out of a possible five. One overjoyed customer said: "This is the best laser printer I have ever used by far! Fantastic value for money!" And another added: "This is a good product simple to set up has 2 sided printing so you can save paper, and the scan and copy functions mean you only need one unit for all your home or home office needs. "It can also print from your phone if you install the brother app." Yet not every home worker is blown away by this printer, as one less satisfied shopper added: "Moving from a HP device that was in itself poor, i though this would be significantly better at 4 x the price, but there are issues ranging from it erroring repeatedly to constantly going into sleep and deep sleep, from which you can't get it to wake from. "I mean, why is that even a feature?" But another happy shopper wrote: "I recommend this as a printer and a scanner. I found it easy to set up and easy to use. It's fast for printing and very quiet in use." The discounted printer is available on Amazon. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
