Colin Ackermann went for 43 just before the close as Sai Kahore's two wickets gave Surrey hope of a fourth victory of the season.
Second-placed Nottinghamshire's hopes of staying in touch with the leaders were boosted by skipper Haseeb Hameed's century at Trent Bridge.
Responding to Somerset's 438 all out, Hameed made his third hundred of the season with his unbeaten 103 from 179 balls taking him past the 1,000 run mark this summer.
Freddie McCann chipped in with 48 and Joe Clarke was undefeated on 26 as Nottinghamshire closed on 189 for two.
Arise, skipper!

Essex made a massive 602 for six against Warwickshire with bowlers short of joy on a batting-friendly pitch at Chelmsford.
Centuries from Charlie Allison (133) and Michael Pepper (107 not out) added to Tom Westley's 148.
Warwickshire also made hay with the bat to close on 140 for two as skipper Alex Davies made 58, with Dan Mousley unbeaten on 54.
Yorkshire established a first-innings lead over Sussex at Scarborough after bowling out the visitors for 222.
Jack White was the pick of the bowlers with three for 25 from 19 overs as the wickets were shared around.
Adam Lyth (115 from 233 balls) and James Wharton (85 from 130) shared a 168-run partnership for the third wicket, and Yorkshire will resume play on day three 292 for four – a lead of 70.

Worcestershire are 106 runs adrift of Hampshire at the halfway stage with eight first-innings wickets left at New Road.
The visitors were dismissed for 293 after Tom Prest's 54 and it looked an unsatisfactory score after the hosts reached 187 for two.
Jake Libby (70 not out) and Adam Hose (82 not out) were defiant with an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 126.

Tennis courts in Rugby park reopen after £75,000 refurbishment
A set of tennis courts in Warwickshire have reopened following a near £75,000 refurbishment, Rugby Borough Council has announced. The facilities at Caldecott Park, Rugby, now boast new hard court surfaces, net posts, nets, security gates and comes after the council secured a £50,000 grant from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and its Tennis Foundation's Park Tennis Project, supported by government funding. Councillor Maggie O'Rourke said the council planned for the courts to host local tennis leagues and offer Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions. She said: "We're delighted to officially reopen Caldecott Park's tennis courts following the generous support from the LTA Tennis Foundation."Through the Park Tennis Project, the LTA plans to deliver the biggest ever investment in park tennis facilities across Britain, offering players of all ages and ability the opportunity to pick up a racquet and play."Both courts are open seven days a week and can be booked via the LTA's Lloyd, LTA chief executive, said: "We're delighted to see the tennis courts in Rugby's Caldecott Park reopen to the public - and in better shape than ever."Park tennis courts are vital for providing people with opportunities to pick up a racquet and we want as many people as possible, of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, to enjoy playing tennis and being active." Jacob Bethell to become youngest man to captain England in Ireland series
Jacob Bethell is set to become the youngest man to captain England in an international fixture after being installed as skipper for the three-match T20I series against Ireland in September. Bethell will stand in for Harry Brook with England's regular white-ball skipper and other three-format players rested from the engagement in Malahide. The highly-rated Warwickshire batting all-rounder, who appeared in the fifth Test against India, will surpass the record of Monty Bowden, who was 23 years old and 144 days when he led England Men in a Test match against South Africa at Cape Town in 1888/89. Bethell will not turn 22 until October. Brook will lead England in the three ODIs and three T20s against South Africa that begin on 2 September, with fast bowler Sonny Baker an eye-catching call-up to the squad. Baker, who is capable of bowling in excess of 90mph, has impressed for Hampshire in the County Championship and T20 Blast this summer and produced several strong showings for the Manchester Originals in The Hundred. 'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage,' Luke Wright, England men selector, explained. 'Sonny is a player we have identified for a while and he was impressive during the England Lions tours last winter. He has carried that form into this season in white-ball cricket with Hampshire and Manchester Originals and deservedly gets his opportunity.' England remain without Mark Wood but have plenty of pace in their white-ball set-up, with all of Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton included in the ODI group for the South Africa series. Left-arm quick Luke Wood is included in the two T20 squads, while Rehan Ahmed provides leg-spinning back-up to Adil Rashid after an encouraging season with bat and ball at Leicestershire Liam Dawson retains his place after his recall for the West Indies encounters earlier in the summer, while Tom Hartley is a possible debutant in the Ireland T20 series - the Lancashire spinner went to last year's World Cup in the format but did not make an appearance. ODI Squad v South Africa: Harry Brook (Yorkshire) - Captain Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) Jofra Archer (Sussex) Sonny Baker (Hampshire) Tom Banton (Somerset) Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) Jos Buttler (Lancashire) Brydon Carse (Durham) Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire) Will Jacks (Surrey) Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Adil Rashid (Yorkshire) Joe Root (Yorkshire) Jamie Smith (Surrey) IT20 Squad v South Africa: Harry Brook (Yorkshire) – Captain Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) Jofra Archer (Sussex) Tom Banton (Somerset) Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) Jos Buttler (Lancashire) Brydon Carse (Durham) Liam Dawson (Hampshire) Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire) Will Jacks (Surrey) Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Adil Rashid (Yorkshire) Phil Salt (Lancashire) Jamie Smith (Surrey) Luke Wood (Lancashire) IT20 Squad v Ireland: Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) - Captain Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) Sonny Baker (Hampshire) Tom Banton (Somerset) Jos Buttler (Lancashire) Liam Dawson (Hampshire) Tom Hartley (Lancashire) Will Jacks (Surrey) Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Matthew Potts (Durham) Adil Rashid (Yorkshire) Phil Salt (Lancashire)

'Great to get one over Notts' - Foxes' Trevaskis
Leicestershire all-rounder Liam Trevaskis says it was "great to get one over" Nottinghamshire after Wednesday's comprehensive 124-run One-Day Cup victory over their local 26-year-old spinner claimed his first five-wicket haul in white-ball cricket as Notts were dismissed for 209 with 12 overs of their innings still remaining at Kibworth."I can feel the rivalry build as I've got to play against them - they want to beat us, we want to beat them [so] it was great to get one over them," Trevaskis told BBC Radio Leicestershire."I've had a couple of four-fers over the last couple of years so I'm happy to get that one ticked off."The last couple of weeks haven't gone as well as I'd have liked, but credit goes to our lads for putting a good score on the board. With runs on the board it's always a lot easier as a spinner."Describing the Kibworth pitch as producing "tennis ball bounce", left-arm off-spinner Trevaskis also praised team-mate and former Notts batsman Sol Budinger, who smashed 102 off 80 balls as the Foxes posted an imposing 333-8."It's amazing, he keeps scoring runs, the ground really suits him well," Trevaskis said of the Foxes opener."It's great to see him getting runs and he puts bums on seats. He's an entertaining batter to watch and I'm very chuffed for him."Leicestershire currently sit third in the Group A standings after two wins and a defeat from their opening three continue their One-Day Cup campaign with a trip to Hampshire on Friday [11:00 BST].
