Indrani Mukerjea shines as Chitrangada in IME's bold retelling of Tagore's Warrior Princess

Time of India05-07-2025
On a night that will linger in Mumbai's cultural memory,
Indrani Mukerjea
stepped onto the stage of the Royal Opera House and delivered a performance that was nothing short of transformative.
Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari
, produced by Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise (IME), reimagined Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's timeless heroine for a new era — and did so with a ferocity and vulnerability that belonged wholly to Mukerjea.
In the dual roles of Kurupa and Surupa, Indrani embodied every nuance of Chitrangada's journey: the fierce warrior moulded by her father to rule, the woman torn between love and self-worth, and the human being who refuses to choose between strength and tenderness. Her portrayal resonated beyond the footlights, drawing audiences into Chitrangada's inner world with a depth that was both raw and regal.
The night belonged as much to Indrani as it did to her company. With
Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari
, it showcased an unwavering commitment to powerful, women-centred storytelling.
It was a production that blended classical Indian aesthetics with a modern heartbeat — a delicate balancing act that required both courage and clarity of purpose.
The result was a visually striking and emotionally resonant spectacle, featuring original music, hybrid choreography, and a stage design that mirrored Chitrangada's transformation from Kurupa to Surupa. The production's ambition announced IME as a formidable force in India's performing arts landscape, unafraid to take creative risks and tell stories that challenge, inspire, and heal.

Much of the evening's magic sprang from the creative mind of director and composer Madhumita Chakraborty. She approached Tagore's 1892 one-act masterpiece with a clear mission: to strip it of inaccessible grandeur and find its human core. The result was a score and choreography that felt urgent and timeless.
Director Tony Chakraborty's ability to translate Chitrangada's internal struggles into visual metaphors elevated every moment.
Subtle shifts in lighting reflected her shifting identity, while bold set changes mirrored her inner turmoil. His staging was often poetic, sometimes startling, but always deeply connected to the character's journey. His work gave the play a fluidity that carried audiences seamlessly from moments of introspection to the thunderous crescendos of battle and self-realisation.
If there was one surprise of the night, it was how dancer Sandip Soparrkar's usual stage presence seemed almost dwarfed by Indrani's incandescent performance.
As Arjun, Soparrkar brought his characteristic precision and grace, but even his carefully measured movements and emotional restraint could not pull focus from the magnetic centre that was Mukerjea's Chitrangada.
The audience's response was immediate and thunderous. As the final lights dimmed,
Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari
was met with a standing ovation that felt as much a tribute to Mukerjea's extraordinary performance as it was to the production's bold artistic vision.
By the end of the evening, it was clear that both Indrani and her company had not only brought Tagore's
Chitrangada
to life but redefined what it means to tell a woman's story on an Indian stage. And in a world where women's voices are too often muted,
Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari
thundered with truth, beauty, and a warrior's heart.

NFL or TMZ? Roger Goodell accused of exploiting Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance to boost NFL profits

Roger Goodell's embrace of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance has proven strategically lucrative (Image via IG) When NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell publicly embraced Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce 's high-profile romance, it raised eyebrows across the sports world. But now, heading into the 2025 season, it's becoming increasingly clear that Goodell's instincts were spot on. The intersection of pop culture and pro football has never been more lucrative—or more visible. The Taylor Swift effect: how a pop star's presence is driving a cultural shift in football viewership Taylor Swift, a 14-time Grammy winner, was a regular fixture at Kansas City Chiefs games during the 2023 season. Whether cheering from the suite with Donna Kelce or joining Patrick Mahomes' wife, Brittany, Taylor's attendance drew millions of fans—many of whom weren't previously NFL viewers. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell weighs in on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's relationship #shorts Goodell welcomed this crossover, telling CBS Mornings, "They have a connection to our game and to Taylor. She is an unbelievable artist, and Travis is an unbelievable player. I think it's great for the league to have that kind of attention. So we welcome it." Why the NFL is leaning into Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's growing public power Goodell's endorsement was more than just a soundbite—it was strategic. Under his leadership, the NFL's annual revenue has soared past $20 billion, and aligning the league with a global superstar like Swift only expands its reach. It's not just about selling tickets anymore—this is about capturing cultural relevance across generations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo Even the possibility of Swift investing in an NFL team, as Goodell hinted, shows how the league is evolving. 'She has the ability to do so,' he noted, though Swift has remained quiet on that front. As Travis Kelce's career nears its twilight, Taylor Swift's role in the NFL narrative may only grow With Travis Kelce entering what could be his final NFL season—his 13th—after a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, the couple's visibility is expected to surge. Swift's 'Eras Tour' has wrapped, freeing her up to attend more games. This creates a unique opportunity for the NFL: one final, all-eyes-on-them season where sports, entertainment, and romance collide. For fans and the league alike, that's a winning formula. Isha Koppikar recalls being humiliated by South choreographer in her debut film: 'These girls come from Bollywood, they don't know anything'

Before establishing herself in Bollywood with roles in films like Shah Rukh Khan's Don and Ram Gopal Varma's Company, Isha Koppikar faced a bruising start to her acting journey in the South film industry. In a recent interview, the actor opened up about being humiliated by a choreographer during her debut Telugu film W/o V. Vara Prasad (1997), where she had appeared in a song sequence. Sharing the incident, Isha told Digital Commentary, 'It happened in South. And it was just the beginning. I already had two films. So, it was before Bollywood. When I was on the set, there was a lot of dance. You know South dance. They're not easy.' The choreographer, she recalled, publicly shamed her on set in front of the entire unit, accusing her of being a clueless Bollywood import. 'He told me in front of everyone, 'These girls come from Bollywood. They don't know anything. I don't know why they take them... If you don't know dance, then why did you come here?'' 'I cried in my van... then I called Usha ji' Isha said she was devastated by the criticism. 'I felt very bad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo I felt humiliated. I went into my make-up van and I cried.' But instead of letting the moment defeat her, she turned it into a motivator. 'I took it as a challenge. I said next time when I come to the South, I will dance very well. I will not give anyone a chance to speak like this.' Remember 'Khallas' girl Isha Koppikar? Diva clicked at airport, asks paps 'Neend nahi aati?' Determined to improve, she reached out to Saroj Khan's assistant Usha ji. 'I told Usha ji, 'I want to learn dance. You come and teach me all the songs of Saroj ji.' She took out time and came to my house in Mahim and taught me daily.' Isha trained on classic Bollywood numbers like Taal Se Taal Mila and Mujhe Rang De, which she says covered all the major moves used in the industry. How Khallas changed the game Despite all the dance training, Isha notes that ironically, her breakthrough item number Khallas in Company didn't have too much choreography. 'If you look at it, there is not much dance in Khallas, but people felt that I know how to dance. Because I had gained confidence. A lot of confidence.' She credited Khallas director Ram Gopal Varma and choreographer Ganesh Acharya for giving her the confidence to shine. 'Ramu came to me and said, 'I have made this set for you. You should feel that this is your father's set. I want such an attitude.' So I said, 'Okay. If it is my father's, then I will bring the same attitude.' And then Khallas happened and magic happened.'
