Data Sharing Act 2025 takes effect today
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said in a statement today that the Data Sharing Act 2025 created a process for federal agencies to request data and how such requests would be handled.
'The National Data Sharing Committee will carry out a strict evaluation when an application is made according to the criteria set in the Act, in deciding whether or not the data requested can be shared. This promotes accountability while ensuring personal data remains safe.
'This new Act is set to enhance public service delivery, allowing government departments to access shared data in real time. This will result in faster decision-making and better coordination in public services,' he said.
Gobind said the sharing and analysis of data were essential for technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), particularly for developing applications for various sectors, such as healthcare, agriculture, and urban planning, resulting in innovative and realistic solutions.
'Through this legislation, and the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO), the MADANI Government's aspiration to create an AI nation will be further accelerated.
'The Data Sharing Act 2025 will also create a more connected and data-driven Government that will benefit Malaysians, safeguard their welfare, and promote economic growth,' he said.
He also urged all state governments to introduce similar legislation, which would facilitate data sharing across federal, states and local government agencies, ultimately benefiting the whole country.
'We are also in the process of engaging industry players to find mechanisms that will enable the sharing of data between the government and the industry in the near future.
'This will enable greater use of technology, data-driven governance and future technology solutions, which will enable our country to optimise the benefits of technology for the Rakyat, moving ahead,' he said.

Loke: Jalur Gemilang a symbol of unity

Speaking during the 'Kibarkan Jalur Gemilang Komuniti Pelabuhan Klang' programme, Loke reminded Malaysians that the national flag transcends race, religion and politics. 'Although there have been several recent incidents involving the Jalur Gemilang, we must not forget that it is our common flag. 'National Day should unite Malaysians and remind us that love for the country must be part of our character and daily lives,' he said at the event held at the Port Klang Authority Social and Recreational Club yesterday. His remarks followed two incidents in which the national flag was displayed upside down – initially at a primary school in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, and subsequently at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang. On another matter, Loke stressed the importance of the logistics sector as the backbone of Malaysia's economy. 'Without logistics, trade cannot take place, and the economy would be crippled,' he said. Loke said it is the mission of the industry to ensure that Port Klang, already ranked among the world's 10 busiest ports, continues to grow and drive national prosperity. He added that development plans for Carey Island, designated as the country's third port, are underway and are expected to bring additional benefits to the Port Klang community. At the event, Loke also presented the Jalur Gemilang to representatives of logistics and transportation companies in conjunction with the upcoming National Day celebrations.

Strengthen existing laws to address bullying, says Nancy
PETALING JAYA: A review should be done to strengthen existing laws to address bullying, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (pic). The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said that although the task of amending laws does not come under her purview, she is prepared to discuss the matter with the relevant agencies. 'There may not be a need to enact a new law. 'However, in light of recent bullying cases, it may give us new ideas to explore possible improvements to existing laws,' she told reporters after attending the Gempak Inspirasi @ Sepagi Bersama PPWS 2025 Programme yesterday. Nancy said the matter would be raised during the Cabinet meeting, Bernama reported. The minister was responding to calls from Gerakan Gubal Akta Anti Buli (GAB) for the government to introduce a specific law to comprehensively address bullying. On the need for a specific law, Nancy said that there is no need for a new law as bullying is already covered under the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 and the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Act 2025. Meanwhile, the Education Ministry announced the setting up of a committee to improve safety in all educational institutions. Dubbed the Safety and Education Institutional Reforms Committee, it held its first meeting on Friday and immediately outlined a clear direction and a comprehensive action plan to be implemented in stages with regard to the reforms. 'The committee was set up specifically to deal with issues that may arise while coming up with the appropriate resolution framework to ensure the safety and the well-being of students, teachers and those in the education community,' the ministry said in a statement on its Facebook account yesterday. The setting up of the committee follows the widely reported death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Zara Qairina's body was exhumed 23 days after burial to facilitate a renewed investigation. The committee comprises academicians, representatives from non-governmental organisations, experts, relevant agencies and the private sector. Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said that a whole of nation approach must be taken to put a stop to bullying. 'All Malaysians must unite and work together to address the issue.'
