Serial dating and push presents: love in the age of the algorithm is complex
Jett recently gave Pookie a single instruction on one of their European getaways: 'Do not leave Paris without a Birkin.' Luxury unboxings are a staple on their page. These #relationshipgoals have increasingly influenced viewers' standards and expectations in their own relationships. The spectacle of lavish gifts and experiences can shift expectations and expressions of love towards the more demonstrable aspects of romance. 'If my husband doesn't get me a Hermès Kelly as my push present, he will be fired,' reads one TikTok comment.
Sometimes, the deepest connections you feel toward a partner come not from the giving of gifts, but the smaller moments of kindness: preparing a favourite snack or a foot rub on the sofa. Growth and connection can come after the reconciling of a fight. Sometimes, love is just spending time together in silence.
To their credit, Pookie and Jett also share more candid moments of love. 'In case any of you are wondering what Pookie's favourite thing to do is, it's cuddle,' says Jett, with a sleeping Campbell lying on his bare chest. Although one of their shared moments of breakfast in bed, sipping pink champagne and dancing together in PJs, was professionally filmed to launch their new merchandise line.
These exceptionally high relationship goals are also found on the other side of the spectrum in the content of serial daters. 'Dating influencers' are predominantly young women who reveal all about their love lives to eager followers. Take TikToker estéeisonline, outlining her ideal man, she claims to just be looking for a '6ish foot, dark haired, good haired, moustached or bearded man … maybe with tattoos, who's funny (my kind of funny), creative, thoughtful, emotionally available, ambitious, makes money, wants kids, likes cats … and is my biggest fan'. In a later viral TikTok, she tearfully relays her disappointment at her date's request to split the bill. 'I just want a gentleman,' she says through tears. In this world of dating, if idealised standards aren't met, it doesn't matter that the date was 'good'.
There is a personal cost to this style of dating. Hannah Zaslawski began a TikTok series where she tried to go on 50 first dates in pursuit of love. After experiencing major fatigue and burnout, she would suddenly call it quits at date number 38, and in doing so ended her virality. Influencers are almost obliged to keep drearily dating because the TikTok algorithm demands it.
More uncomfortably, there is the question of our relationship to their relationships. Many of their viewers appear to live vicariously through them; something that becomes especially apparent when the relationship ends. Recently, when popular influencer The Wizard Liz called off her engagement to fellow YouTuber Landon Nickerson over his messaging of another woman, swathes of her fans had their own lives altered. 'If [Liz] had to go through this, us mortals, us little peasants … how are we going to survive?' declared another of her fans.
In all of this content, it's apparent that influencer couples and daters make a deal – in exchange for sharing their lives with an audience, they are able to make an income through advertising and commerce. A couple becomes in effect a throuple – creator, partner/love interest and audience. Their audience buy what they sell because, in buying into their brand, they're buying into the ideal of romance being sold.
Pookie wanted to be an influencer since 2017 and hit what the Cut called 'algorithm gold' when she introduced her husband into her content, after years of consistently posting with modest success. Items from their clothing line, Quintessential Love, are often sold out. Jett gives TED talks on how to 'authentically love out loud' like he does.
Although, the business of likes has, at times, come between couples. Former Instagram it couple Jay Alvarrez and Alexis Ren's wanderlust relationship ended abruptly in 2016, when in spectacular public fashion ( destroying the facade entirely), Alexis told a fan that 'the relationship wasn't good for [Jay's] business any more'.
Love in the age of the algorithm is complex – but creators and audiences would do well to remember that so is love in the real world.

Myleene Klass reveals she caught her ex husband cheating on her with a famous female celebrity who has built her brand on 'family' values
Myleene Klaas has revealed she caught her husband cheating on her with another celebrity - at her own birthday party. The former One Show presenter, 47, said she walked in on the moment the former Hear'Say bodyguard, Graham Quinn, and the female star were taking each other's clothes off on the balcony of her own home. Refusing to name the woman, the Loose Women panelist hinted that the person in question has built a career off a 'family brand'. Myleene first started going out with her Irish bodyguard in 2001 and they were together for 12 years until they split in 2013. Speaking on Paul Brunson's We Need To Talk podcast the mother-of-two said: 'I walked in on him with a famous person on my birthday on a balcony.' According to the TV presenter, the pair tried to claim that it wasn't what it looked like and she continued: 'I'm in my house, it's my party. They weren't having sex, but they were unzipping each other. ''It's not what you think'. But I'm like, 'It is what I think'. 'It's the first thing they both said. I kicked everyone out of the party, including his mum and dad. They went back to Ireland and his dad said: 'He doesn't get it from me'. 'I remember thinking that was quite a weird thing to say,' she told the love expert. Graham, who Myleene shares her two children Ava, 17, and Hero, 13, with, tried to blame the affair on being drunk. She admitted the whole ordeal was a 'pretty big red flag' but still went through with their wedding in October 2011 but the pair split just six months later when Graham walked out on the mother of his children, coincidently, on her birthday. Turning her thoughts towards the other woman, Myleene said: 'I've made peace with that situation now, but for a long time, it was very difficult to see their life. 'My life literally just broke apart very, very publicly and their life, they've managed to continue building a family brand on it. I have to take some accountability 'Look, you know, first and foremost to my children. My children have asked enough questions and it's never been a case of laying out my stall now. 'It's got to be as and when. But here's the funny thing - school mums, people who just want to gossip, will go to your children before anybody else.' Myleene previously recalled the twisted request the women her ex cheated on her with asked her, she shared that the person who her ex had an affair with asked her for a photo one time. Myleene said on Loose Women: '100%, I've been on the receiving of someone who cheated on me. I was extremely disturbed as was my family as was the ripple effect of people who have to live with those actions. 'Put it this way, one of the people that he cheated on me with asked to have a photo with me and I refused. 'One of the people that he had an affair with or a relationship with just said "Can I have a photo with you?" 'I said "No. I do not agree with what you stand for". If I then put myself, If I align myself or have allegiance to you as a person, that photo is out there forever. 'I don't agree with women or men having their lives turned upside down with lies and deceit because you didn't think it was that big of a crime. Speaking on Paul Brunson's We Need To Talk podcast the mother-of-two said: 'I walked in on him with a famous person on my birthday on a balcony.' 'You're messing with peoples emotions and their lives. They have permanent repercussions.' It comes after Myleene revealed she was ' sobbing in the bath' the night before her wedding to Graham. The former Hear'Say popstar said 'she knew it wasn't right' between her and her partner at the time but went through with things anyway. Speaking on Loose Women, Myleene then admitted she knew that he was unfaithful ahead of their wedding day and said she realised she wanted a divorce three days into the marriage. The singer revealed that she was told to leave him at the alter by her friends and said the night before the nuptials she was still deciding what to do. Myleene said: 'I was in the bath the night before I got married – which most of us know, didn't end well, in fact it went so badly that the priest even offered to annul the wedding. It was that quick!' 'I was in the bath and I was just sobbing because something didn't feel right, I just knew it wasn't right. And my girlfriend, now my girlfriend of 18 years, at the time she just said, 'The car is outside.' Like Thelma and Louise, we could just go.' 'At the time I didn't feel I could go, I had two children, and I had this wedding, you know we had the cathedral and we had the priest and it was just everything was there.'

Emotional Myleene Klass claims she caught ex cheating on her with another celebrity at a party
MYLEENE Klass has revealed the shocking moment she caught her ex husband Graham Quinn cheating on her with another celebrity. The Loose Women star, 47, said she walked in on her ex and a famous woman in the industry "unzipping" each other's clothes. 6 6 6 Myleene said the heartbreaking moment happened in her own home at her birthday party while she and Graham were in a relationship. The singer, who did not name the mystery lady, said that while her life had "broken down in public", the woman he allegedly cheated with was continuing to "build a family brand". Speaking on We Need To Talk podcast, Myleene said: "I walked in on him with a famous person on my birthday on a balcony. "I've made peace with that situation now but for a long time it was very difficult to see their life… Not that I would wish that on a family. "I don't know, I feel conflicted. "But my life literally just broke apart very, very publicly. "And their life, they've managed to continue building a family brand on it and it felt so difficult for a long time. This is the person I caught him with." Myleene said she kicked all of her guests out of the party including her ex's parents following the humiliating ordeal. She continued: "It was in my house, it was my party. They weren't having sex but they were unzipping each other. 'It's not what you think,' but it is what I think. It's the first thing they both said. "I kicked everybody out of the party including his mum and dad. Myleene Klass breaks down in tears on Loose Women over four 'nightmare' miscarriages "They went back to Ireland. And his dad said, 'He doesn't get it from me.' I was like, OK, I just remember that being quite a weird thing to say." Despite Graham's alleged infidelity, Myleene claimed he apologised and blamed the booze for his actions She said: "He said it was the drink. I have to take some accountability, first and foremost to my children. "My children have asked enough questions and it's never been a case of laying out my stall now, it's got to be as and when. "But here's the funny thing, school mums, people who just want to gossip, will go to your children before anybody else. "They'll tell them facts. But they've been raised by me and only me." Myleene started dating her bodyguard Graham while she was still in Hear'Say. The couple dated for around six years before having their first child, Ava, in 2007. Their next daughter, Hero Harper was born in 2011. Later that year Myleene and Graham were married, but just six months later he walked out on her and they were divorced in 2013. Myleene revealed that she spent her wedding day in floods of tears after he stopped her from "planning" a proper celebration. She said her ex believed the wedding was "turning into a circus" with "too many people". The TV said: "It was the most miserable… No one forgot this wedding because I literally cried the entire reception because it wasn't even really a reception. We had to haggle our way through with the restaurant, could we have some burgers and put the tables together? "There was no planning because I wasn't allowed to plan a wedding." Myleene is thought to be worth around £11 million, but didn't sign a pre-nup when they signed the knot. She recalled: "So we'd had the biggest row, myself and my ex, and he'd gone off, because I'd asked him why he wouldn't sign the prenup. I asked him to sign a prenup. "On the night of our wedding I asked again. "I just felt something was wrong and he didn't want a big wedding. "My best mate wasn't even at my wedding. They weren't allowed to come otherwise he wouldn't go through with it and it was just trying to claw, and hold on to those last moments." Despite the red flags, Myleene still went through with the wedding for the sake of her kids and persuasion from her Catholic mother. "I had a six month old baby and had my mother, she didn't want me to have children out of wedlock," she admitted. "He's Irish Catholic and I don't think his family were that happy that he'd had kids out of wedlock either. "So let's bring in good old Catholicism because that'll fix it." But just a few months later the pair separated after Myleene believes Graham was cheating on her again. She said: "I hired a tour manager and I took my babies with me; I took my friend with me; to where I knew he was working, to do a surprise. "And I knew there'd been somebody in that room. "Weirdly even then… Christ. The baby was so little and that was trial by papers. It was horrific. "There's nothing you can't throw at me now ever that I can't come through and I've lost babies, I've been to court, I've lost a house. That divorce and the mud that was slung and the kiss and tells… taking all of that on…" Myleene believes her ex had been planning to leave her after she found out that he had purchased a house without her knowing. She continued: "One pop star rang me up and she was like, 'I think I've got your money, it's in my safe'. "He'd hidden the money because he was way down the line. They say you don't leave when you leave, you've gone already. "He'd actually got a house. He had a secret house that he'd bought already. "You don't just buy a house like that. When that came through I was reeling from it." The most shocking moment came when Myleene claimed he wrote down a figure on a post-it note, which detailed how much he wanted in the divorce. The singer said: "On the day he decided it was over, he pushed a little Post-It note across the table with the figure he wanted. I was just like, how have you figured this out?" She added: "All I will say to you is I've raised my children single-handedly, financially, as a sole parent for 12 years." Myleene is now engaged to Simon Motson, who she met four and a half years after her divorce. On Valentine's Day, 2019, the television presenter revealed that she was pregnant with her third child - her first with Simon. She gave birth to baby boy Apollo on August 1, 2019. Myleene previously talked about her divorce from Graham in an interview with Woman magazine, where she said she felt "so betrayed and so crushed". 6 6 6

Molly-Mae Hague admits she 'can't look in the mirror' amid struggles with 'low confidence' - as she reveals she's in therapy for the first time amid backlash for 'being out of touch'
A downcast Molly-Mae Hague opened up about her struggles with her confidence and appearance as she spoke in her latest YouTube vlog released on Monday. The influencer, 26, admitted she can 'barely even look at herself in the mirror' at the moment as she also revealed she had started therapy for the first time - amid backlash for being 'out of touch' by some of her followers. In her recent vlog she tearfully broke her silence following recent backlash from fans who once again branded the whinging millionaire influencer 'out of touch'. She has been accused of 'always moaning' in recent weeks after complained she'd 'not done one fun thing all summer' despite jetting off to multiple destinations. She also faced criticism after complaining about a recent £86,000 motorhome holiday. In her recent vlog she spoke about how she feels about her appearance as a busy mum and shared a clip driving to her first ever therapy session. Molly-Mae said as she prepared to have her hair done: 'Basically I have just been feeling really, and I feel like all of us girls go through it, where we have that really low confidence week and I could barely even look at myself in the mirror. 'So I feel like I am really ready for a bit of a glow up because I am not enjoying what is going on right now. 'I was just not feeling great in the way I look and it was really getting to me. I was in such a funk yesterday.' She then shared a video of her driving to therapy as she explained to her followers: 'I've never had it before this is my first session. I have zero idea of what to expect, I don't have a clue. I'm dreading it a bit as at the minute my life is good.' She gave a debrief after as she said she wasn't sure if she would go back again: 'It was only an hour so it will take a few sessions to get into. It's hard because I was having a good week but now I have had to talk about all the hard stuff and it's brought it all back up and now it's sitting heavy on me and now I have to go home and go be a mum again. 'I can't decide if I am going to go back or not. Maybe I need to give it more time.' Elsewhere in the vlog she tearfully broke her silence following recent backlash from fans who once again branded the millionaire influencer 'out of touch'. Molly-Mae's sister Zoe Hague has also come under fire for her 'tone deaf' posts of late after revealing she had fled Bali for Dubai after just 48 hours because it didn't live up to her expectations. In her latest YouTube video, Molly-Mae claimed that she 'didn't care' about the uproar but has been left 'scared' about discussing anything 'controversial'. Her vlog also saw her struggling with the difficulties of motherhood and sharing an update on her relationship with Tommy Fury, also 26. Filming herself in the driving seat and two-year-old daughter Bambi in the back she said: 'I'm trying so so hard to stay positive but, I feel like I need to keep my camera running all day so you can see like every single thing, [Bambi] is a huge problem, [She] screams [I] can't even get like socks and shoes on'. 'I don't care who tells me I am out of touch with reality or all this stuff that's going on on T ikTok at the minute, I don't care I'm not going to not talk about it'. She later went on: 'I feel like I don't want to talk about anything controversial anymore because in the last video I said some things I probably could have worded better and even with all the motherhood things I am talking about at the minute, it's just a lot'. 'Debunking that whole thing about me feeling like I shouldn't talk about what is going on in the day because I am scared about what people will think and what they have to say about it'. Moving on to Tommy, with whom she rekindled her romance earlier this year, she explained why he hadn't featured in her Vlogs despite them being back together. 'I've see so many comments saying '[My sister] Zoe is more the dad' I only vlog when I am not with Tommy, I am with Tommy literally 80% of the week and he is with Bambi majority of the week,' 'But I vlog when we are here and he is at his because it's just something that I am not ready to like open up with yet and like flinging the camera around like when we're a family'. Before adding: 'I just think like we're not there yet and still figuring out life and living situations. I'm not ready to vlog like we used to'. Last week fans blasted the TV personality for 'always moaning' after after she said she'd 'not done one fun thing all summer' despite jetting off to multiple destinations. She said in her vlog: 'I said to a friend the other day, that I'm going to make it to the end of summer having not done one fun thing.' She then spoke to her sister and said: 'Zoe, I haven't socialised once. I'm going to get to the end of this summer having not done one social fun thing. 'I haven't a life. That's not good is it. Summer will end and I've not done one fun social thing.' It left some fans open-mouthed as they called out how she failed to acknowledge the three holidays she's already been on this year. Some comments read: 'She's a millionaire, she can literally wake up tomorrow and do whatever the hell she wants', 'Wimbledon, lunches, Spain, Dubai, France, Centre Parcs... let's normalise that', 'This was so jarring because she can casually spend 6k in Dior on an outfit to log to Wimbledon then complains she has no time for herself', 'Why does she always want us to feel sorry for her?' The mum-of-one - in this year alone - has been on no expense-spared trips to Dubai, Budapest and even Disneyland in 2025. Back in March she and Tommy Fury took baby Bambi on a family holiday to the United Arab Emirates, marking a reunion holiday for the clan. Just a month later Tommy had treated Molly to a European trip as the pair enjoyed downtime in Budapest. During their break, they stayed at The Pullman, a five-star hotel where prices start from at least £500 per night. Meanwhile, in May the doting parents took Bambi to Disneyland Paris where they enjoyed a lavish stay at the park's resort. It came after her candid complaints about a recent £86,000 motorhome holiday her family went on - after Tommy said their daughter Bambi shouldn't be spoilt with five star trips. The family were travelling on a swanky Elddis Avalon 255 motorhome. Yet Molly-Mae revealed the trip had been struck with delays, leaving Bambi 'overtired and overstimulated'. She explained: 'Tommy has bought a motorhome and we spent our first weekend in the motorhome this weekend. Obviously, being us, we went in feet first and decided to go to the Isle of Man. 'Tommy's family were spending the weekend in the Isle of Man. I was feeling spontaneous so we literally booked the ferry to the Isle of Man an hour before we needed to leave. 'We'd never used the motorhome before, we needed to pack it up, sort Bambi, I just had this wave of 'you only live once, have a bit of fun. 'Bambi doesn't need to be so perfectly routine every day, she's not a newborn anymore. 'I've got so stuck in my ways with the fact that her routine is her routine and I don't really steer away from it. 'I'm not gonna feel bad for that because that is what works for me and that is what works for Bambi and Tommy, so that's fine.' She then added of when things started to go wrong: 'So anyway, booked the ferry, packed the motorhome up and nearly didn't make the ferry but that's another story and then there was a two hour delay. 'This ferry, which was already gonna get us in at 11:30pm, which was already severely triggering me because Bambi goes to bed at 7pm, was not fine. It was giving me a prime example as to why the routine works for us. 'It was one of those moments where strangers come up to you and are like 'can I help? Is there anything I can do?' 'She was screaming that much for four hours straight. The boat basically had a malfunction and it wouldn't move for like two hours so we had a huge delay. 'She was so, so, so overtired and overstimulated - Bambi is so routine, she is the opposite of flexible.' And when they arrived things continued to go downhill, as she said: 'We managed to get to the Isle of Man at 1:30am in the morning. 'We didn't know where we were, what we were doing, we were going to a different campsite to Tommy's family. It was just a lot. 'We had to make our bed out of this sofa, I was like 'I'm really out of my depth, I'm struggling. The next day, Bambi was so tired, she was just screaming, literally screaming, so, so unhappy. Meanwhile her sister Zoe came under fire for complaining about a recent trip too. Molly-Mae's influencer sister was recently mocked by fans for leaving Bali after just 48 hours because it didn't live up to her expectations. Instead she and her husband Danny made a last minute decision to fly to Dubai instead after Zoe, 28, took to social media to admit 'something wasn't quite right'. The fitness influencer had planned the trip to Indonesia with her husband Danny to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. And despite staying in a huge sea view room at the Radisson Blu, a five-star hotel, they decided to leave early and jet to Dubai instead. Zoe explained that Bali looks better on social media than in real life, as influencers make it look luxurious, despite it being a developing country. In a YouTube video, Zoe told the camera: 'Since landing in Bali, something for us wasn't quite right. 'We came here with high expectations because we had seen on social media that everyone was having such a lovely time. Lovely places to eat and beaches, and lovely gyms and coffee shops. 'But I don't think the reality of Bali is shown much at all, and I do think it is down to a lot of influencers posting the more luxury side of things.' She added: 'Before joining the army, I spent five months travelling South East Asia. I did Thailand, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, I did a lot and spent time in these countries. But there is something very different about Bali. 'We got told Uluwatu where we are now is one of the best places to go, so if this is one of the better places, I'm not sure where the other places are like. 'I wasn't going to sit down and say anything, but people want to know.' Danny then joined the video and said: 'You either go on holiday to travel and experience culture or you want to go away and relax.' Zoe continued: 'Yeah, and we could have got a flight tomorrow as today is our anniversary, but time is precious and we just want to get out, and why delay it. 'We missed the mark, maybe we didn't do our own research, maybe it is our own fault. I did a lot of research though. 'I think it is just personal preference, and our preference was that this isn't for us, and we are making the executive decision to go enjoy our anniversary somewhere we know that we love and can relax and can drink the water.'
