Mark McGhee, scorer of the Dons' second goal against his future club in the 2-0 win, insists Fergie's players took landing the Euro bragging rights' title as seriously as any game. He said: 'It was something we took seriously, we wanted to win it once we were in it. 'A lot of the talk was that it's not as prestigious as the main competitions, which it isn't, of course. 'The best way to describe it, probably, is a bit like a European version of the Charity Shield in England. 'But you're not telling me the fans of Crystal Palace and Liverpool didn't enjoy that last weekend. 'It's a celebration of what you have already achieved and the opportunity to put the crowning glory on it. 'With us winning the Cup Winners' Cup, we relished pitting ourselves against the European Cup winners. 'If there was any doubt about the value of the trophy we won, we wanted to emphasise how good it was by winning this - so we were up for it. 'That sort of thing wasn't around in those days so it obviously didn't dawn on us at the time, but seeing the two stars now is something special.' McGhee scored the Dons' second on the night, after a goalless draw in Germany, following on from Neil Simpson's opener. But hitting the net is the only thing he can recall from the night. He said: 'As far as the game goes, I only really remember the goal. 'I'm like that with any game, some of the boys remember all the details - John Hewitt is great for that - but scoring is the only thing I can ever recall! 'Amongst the squad Neil Simpson and I have always claimed the fame of being the two goalscorers. 'We have always been a little team in a way because we scored - any time we meet up, we wind everyone up that we were the scorers.' Eric Black on the Gothenburg Greats, Sir Alex Ferguson & remembering Neale Cooper McGhee ended up signing for Hamburg the following season after German legend Gunter Netzer - their sporting director - turned up at his flat in Aberdeen. He said: 'That game definitely played a part in me getting to Hamburg. 'I'd scored against them before in the Uefa Cup, against Franz Beckenbauer, which is one I definitely remember clearly. 'I think Hamburg had remembered that goal as well. 'So they knew what I could do. 'Hamburg are a great club and going there had a lot going for it. 'When Gunter Netzer came to my house, my flat in Aberdeen, that's what swung it for me. 'We didn't get much notice he was coming but were still able to get a tray of open sandwiches ready for him!' Millwall come through Newport test to reach Carabao Cup second round
Leonard struck on the break after an hour as the Championship outfit saw off their League Two opponents in a hard-fought first-round clash. County started brightly and almost took a first-half lead via the head of captain James Clarke, who was denied by a fine save at close range by debutant goalkeeper Max Crocombe. Millwall gradually took charge of the contest in the period before half-time with Jake Cooper, Aidomo Emakhu and Josh Coburn all going close to breaking the deadlock. Clarke also had the Welsh side's best chance of the second half straight after the break when he volleyed just off target at the far post from a Courtney Baker-Richardson flick on. The winner came from a quick counter-attack following a County corner that ended with Leonard firing into the top corner from Emakhu's cross. Macaulay Langstaff almost added a second 10 minutes later but Wright saved superbly before denying the impressive Emakhu twice more in the closing stages.
