'Proud Brummie' Benjamin Zephaniah remembered by first city medal

BBC News30-01-2025

The late writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah will be the first recipient of a medal created to honour Birmingham residents. The Handsworth-born actor, whose work often addressed themes of racism, inequality and human rights, died in 2023 aged 65, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. The city council has now approved proposals to posthumously confer upon Zephaniah the City of Birmingham Medal, in a move to celebrate his achievements.Sharon Thompson, deputy council leader, said he was a "proud Brummie and a man of compassion who never forgot the community that shaped him".
The council created the medal in April 2023.Ms Thompson told Tuesday's full council meeting that when Zephaniah died, she made a promise to his family the city "would honour him in a significant way"."It's fitting he is the first recipient of this medal because he spent his whole life breaking new ground."The authority agreed it should consult with Zephaniah's family to make arrangements for awarding the medal within 12 months.Giving a statement on behalf of family this month, his brother Tippa Naphtali said following Zephaniah's death, his family were approached by "many individuals, organisations and institutions who wanted to stage events or initiatives in his memory".The family worked with more than 45 such parties nationally in the year following his passing, he added."Such was the strength of feeling in Birmingham, we have worked (and are still working) with third parties on a number of legacy projects."Mr Naphtali said up to his death Zephaniah remained committed to doing everything he could to promote the city "on a national and international stage". The poet was "passionate about giving the city the recognition and national profile" it deserved, he added.
Conservative councillor Darius Sandhu said Zephaniah "was a force that never forgot where he came from".And Roger Harmer, Liberal Democrat leader at the council, stated the poet grew up in a time of huge challenges, such as racism, inequality and the struggles of working class life."He turned them into fuel for his art," he said. "His poetry reflects the rhythms of Birmingham's streets."Green Party councillor Julien Pritchard said he had been inspired by Zephaniah's sense of hope and justice.

Liverpool star Curtis Jones laps up the sunshine on his holidays with partner Saffie Khan just days after disappointing end to the season with England

Curtis Jones has been spotted lapping up the sunshine on holiday in Italy with his partner Saffie Khan, following a disappointing end to the season with England. The midfielder has earned a well-deserved rest after a campaign in which he helped Liverpool to their 20th league title. Jones, 24, notched up 46 appearances for the Reds in all competitions in the season just gone, with 33 of them coming in the Premier League as Arne Slot 's side romped to their record-equalling triumph. Following a glorious end to the club season, Jones was called up by Thomas Tuchel to play a part in England's June internationals. The boyhood Red started in an unfamiliar role during the Three Lions' drab narrow victory over Andorra - who are ranked 173rd in the world - while also getting a brief cameo in the worrying defeat to Senegal. He hasn't taken long to get the loss off his mind, however, jetting off to Portofino with Khan to embrace the sunshine that is currently absent from the UK. Jones and partner Saffie Khan (right) could be seen chilling in a private pool in the sun The pair, who welcomed a baby girl into the world last October, could be seen relaxing by what looked to be a private pool. 23-year-old Saffie - who is signed to The Muse agency - has been dating Jones for a number of years, with the pair first appearing together on social media back in May 2021. In May of last year, the couple announced that they were expecting a baby girl with a heartwarming video montage. They then enjoyed some downtime as they awaited the arrival of their first child, with Jones not travelling to Germany for Euro 2024. The Liverpool footballer was the first to announce the happy news when their child was born, in a sweet update as he shared his daughter's name with fans. Alongside a series of adorable photos, he wrote: 'Giselle Delilah Jones. 13.10.24 You are our entire world.' In the update, shared to Instagram, Curtis cradled his baby daughter in the hospital before carrying her home in a car seat. Another photo of Saffie showed the family arriving home to a balloon arch and decorations that read: 'Welcome home baby Jones.' Jones is now the Scouser in Liverpool's team after the departure of fellow Liverpool-born star Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was today unveiled as a Real Madrid player. The midfielder was forced to deputise at right-back in April while the now Los Blancos star was out injured, and he passed his test in the Merseyside derby as Liverpool secured a mammoth three pints before sealing the title later in the month. He was so impressive that Tuchel decided to play him there instead of Alexander-Arnold on international duty last week. Although, Jones' performance was not quite as brilliant as two months earlier, with the majority of the Three Lions surprisingly struggling against Andorra.

Loose Women star's husband begged her to quit show over serious 'worries'

After starring as a panellist on Loose Women for four years, the singer said her husband begged her to quit A former Loose Women panellist has spilled the beans on why she left the hit ITV show, revealing her husband's plea for her to step down. Celebrated opera singer Lesley Garrett, who has serenaded royalty including King Charles and the late Queen during her impressive 45-year career, is also known for her stints on television favourites like Strictly Come Dancing and Loose Women. ‌ After sharing her views on the daytime talk show for four years, Lesley has now disclosed that it was her husband, Peter Christian, a GP by profession, who influenced her decision to leave. ‌ "[It's] the only time he's ever asked me to stop doing something," she told the Daily Mail. "He said, 'At the surgery I've got ten minutes with each patient. And eight minutes is taken up with what you've said the day before. I'm worried I'm going to misdiagnose somebody, so please could you stop?'" It is not the first time Lesley expressed her family's fears about her time on the topical programme. In 2011, she said her parents asked her to "give it a rest" for a while. "My mum and dad said, 'Do you think you could just give it a rest for a bit because we can't go down the shops at the moment without somebody saying, 'What have you been up to?'" Despite the pressure, Lesley admitted, "But I enjoy it so much on the show. It's the best fun you can ever have." ‌ Now at 70, Lesley is gearing up for her summer concert, leaving fans to wonder if this performance might be the last chance for fans to see her. Speaking to the Sunday Express, Lesley hinted at hanging up her microphone soon to enjoy a quieter life with her partner in the south of France. On the topic of retirement, she remarked: "I do think about retiring, because I don't want to go on when I'm not as good as I was." ‌ Lesley said: "I want to quit while I'm ahead. I don't want to carry on past my sell-by date. My voice is changing, as voices do. It's still beautiful in the middle, but I can't get as high as I used to." She explained: "Every season I think could be my last. This one I seriously think could be my last year, because I am 70 and it seems like a very round number – I've been doing this for exactly 45 years." If Lesley decides to retire, she acknowledges that members of the Royal Family might miss her performances. Reflecting on Royal engagements, the South Yorkshire-born vocalist shared: "I have sung for King Charles and met him several times. I sang for both the King and Queen recently. "I really enjoy it, I think they do a great job. Their duty to the country is something that is very important to them. The King is very knowledgeable about opera and classical music in general, and the Duchess of Gloucester is very interested too. I've sung for her several times."
