Gig workers bill to be tabled in parliament by September, says Ahmad Zahid
Speaking after the Sharing Economy and Gig Industry Roundtable Session, Ahmad Zahid highlighted that the bill would be the first of its kind globally, offering dedicated protections for over 1.12 million Malaysians engaged in the sector.
'Several countries have amended existing laws to include gig workers, but Malaysia is introducing a new act specifically for this industry,' he said.
The bill aligns with efforts to build a fair, inclusive, and resilient future economy. Ahmad Zahid noted that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has shown interest in learning from Malaysia's approach in drafting the legislation.
This was conveyed by Malaysian Gig Community Secretariat chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, who is currently in Geneva to discuss the bill with the ILO.
Additionally, the soon-to-be-established Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) will play a crucial role in the national gig economy ecosystem. The commission, under the Prime Minister's Department, will oversee implementation, coordination, and compliance within the sector.
'SEGiM will strengthen self-regulation among platform providers while ensuring transparent policy enforcement,' Ahmad Zahid said.
The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation will continue as the technical secretariat, consolidating industry feedback and coordinating with the Human Resource Ministry.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier assured that all welfare concerns for gig workers would be addressed through the bill.
Also present at the session were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.

Applicants must abide by new vetting requirement to determine eligibility PETALING JAYA: Malaysians applying for student or exchange programme visas to the United States must now ensure their social media profiles are publicly viewable. This came following an updated vetting requirement announced by the US Department of State. According to a statement by the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur, this new requirement applies to all applicants under the F (academic students), M (vocational or technical training) and J (exchange programme participants) non-immigrant visa categories. 'All applicants for F, M and J non-immigrant visas will be instructed to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to public,' the embassy said. It added that the change was aimed at facilitating comprehensive screening procedures. The embassy said social media presence was now part of the vetting process to help US authorities verify an applicant's identity and determine eligibility. 'We use available information in our visa screening and vetting to identify visa applicants, who are inadmissible to the US, including those who pose a threat to national security,' it said. The embassy reiterated that obtaining a US visa was a privilege and not a right, and that each application was treated as a national security decision. The US Department of State also announced it would soon resume scheduling appointments for F, M and J visa applications after a temporary pause in late May. Prospective applicants are advised to check the official embassy or consulate websites for appointment availability. The update builds upon a 2019 requirement for visa applicants to provide their social media identifiers as part of the application process.

Viviante appointed Insken CEO

Viviantie, who has extensive experience in social entrepreneurship, spent a year and six months in Scotland to delve into the social innovation ecosystem in Europe and served for four years with a company based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, to strengthen her understanding of the global ecosystem. Malaysia sees Italy as key strategic partner, says Anwar
ROME: The peace that Malaysia and the region enjoy has paved the way for a blossoming economic environment and a robust private sector, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said Malaysia, as Asean chair, had endeavoured to resolve contentious issues, as only a stable bloc could lead to fruitful economic achievement. Reminding Malaysians that they are, in fact, ambassadors of the nation, he said: 'The Malaysian diaspora is an important asset as they function as envoys representing the country outside. Let me urge you to continue taking opportunities to boost your skills and expertise so that you will bring something back to the country,' he told Malaysians living in Italy at a dinner soon after touching down here.
