Raja Musa Forest Reserve Recognised As ASEAN Peatland Reference Site
ATFP chairman S.R. Siva Kumar said the site was chosen in recognition of the success achieved by the Selangor government and relevant parties in transforming the area, which had been degraded by illegal logging and farming, into a model of integrated peatland conservation acknowledged at the international level.
'Today, delegates from seven countries participating in the 10th ATFP Meeting, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and Laos, were brought here to witness firsthand our efforts in rehabilitating peat forests.
'From the feedback received, many of the visitors, comprising policymakers and scientists, expressed admiration for what has been achieved here and are keen for us to share our approach to peatland conservation,' he said.
Siva Kumar, who is also the Biodiversity and Forestry Management Division secretary at the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, was speaking during the ATFP delegation's site visit to the forest reserve today.
He stressed that peatland conservation should be a collective priority due to its vital environmental role, particularly as a significant carbon sink.
Malaysia is hosting and chairing the 10th ATFP Meeting from June 24 to 26 at Novotel, Putrajaya, as part of its ASEAN chairmanship this year.
Meanwhile, Selangor Forestry Department director Azhar Ahmad said the visit served not only to showcase the state's efforts but also to introduce the work and initiatives of various agencies involved in peatland conservation.
'This site was selected because Selangor is implementing an effective Integrated Management Plan (IMP) for its peat swamp forests, which has yielded positive impacts for the state.

Ghost Ship Passes Safety Check As No Hazardous Gas, Chemicals Or Bodies On Board
CHUKAI, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The 'ghost ship' appears to be risk-free as no hazardous chemicals or human remains were found in the abandoned hulk that drifted into the waters of Semangkok A oil platform in Terengganu, said Kemaman Maritime Zone director, Maritime Commander Abdul Halim Hamzah. He said 17 members of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department's (JBPM) Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Special Team and three officers from the Malaysian Marine Department (JLM) of Terengganu were involved in an hour-long inspection on three levels of the 53.7-metre (m)-long and 10m wide ship at the Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) today. He said the fire department had used two types of high-tech equipment, Four-Gas Meter (FGM) and Gasmet (gas analyser), to detect the presence of any hazardous materials or gases in the ship. "The Hazmat team used high-tech advanced equipment to detect any readings from hazardous chemicals or gases on all three levels of the ship. "The area was found to be safe, with no signs or presence of human remains. Initially, there was an unpleasant odour, but upon inspection it was traced to raw materials in the refrigerator," he told a press conference at the Kemaman Maritime Zone here today. In addition, the MMEA team would conduct regular patrols around the ship's area to prevent trespassing. "The 293-tonne ship will be handed over to the JLM for further action," he said. Earlier, the ghost ship was towed (some 140 nautical miles) to KSB here at about 11.30 am before the safety inspection by a JBPM-JLM team was conducted at 3.30 pm. According to MMEA, the ghost ship was first spotted on Aug 12. According to media reports earlier, the Pahang MMEA said the ghost ship is believed to be an oil tanker which caught fire off Tanjung Sedili Kecil, off the Johor coast on Aug 7, where one crew member died, with four others injured.

10 Warships From ASEAN Countries Sail Into Penang
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- A total of 10 warships from ASEAN countries arrived at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) here today to attend events in conjunction with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025. Seven of the warships are from ASEAN countries, and three are from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), bringing about 1,600 naval personnel in total. A Bernama survey found that three RMN warships - KD Kedah, measuring 91 metres (m) in length; KD Lekiu (106.5m); and KD Lekir (98m) - arrived ahead of the other vessels at the SPCT. They were followed closely by RSS Vigour (from Singapore); UMS King Sin Phyu Shin (Myanmar); BRP Antonio Luna (the Philippines); KRI Bung Tomo (Indonesia); VPNS Quang Trang (Vietnam); HTMS Krabi (Thailand); and KPD Darulaman (Brunei). The warships arrived at the SPCT between 9.15 am and 1.45 pm, and were welcomed with military traditions accompanied by a band performance and an RMN delegation. A survey of the Padang Kota area also found that many people seized the opportunity to view the warships docked at the SPCT, including recording their arrival. Visitors may also tour the docked warships on Sunday (Aug 17) and see for themselves the capabilities and technologies used by these regional navy vessels. Penang is set to take centre stage in regional maritime defence as the RMN hosts three key ASEAN naval events from Aug 15-22 under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025. The events are the 19th ASEAN Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM), the Third ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise (AMNEX) and the ASEAN Fleet Review (AFR), with activities across George Town and Batu Ferringhi.

20 RAMD To Conduct Military Exercises In Sungai Nakat Area Between Aug 26-Sept 2
MIRI, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The 20th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (20 RAMD), Sri Miri Camp, will conduct three large-scale military exercises in phases in the Sungai Nakat area, Bakong, near here, as part of efforts to enhance readiness. According to a statement from 20 RAMD, the first exercise, Pasak Bumi Exercise (EPB) Series 2/2025, will be held from Aug 26 to Sept 2, with the participation of 170 officers and personnel. The exercise, based on the Counter-Insurgency Warfare (CIW) concept, involves a 40-kilometre tactical navigation movement over 10 days, as well as activities such as base establishment, communications handling, immediate action drills, ambushes and assaults on enemy camps.
