Rick Derringer, Singer-Songwriter Known for ‘Hang on Sloopy' and ‘Rock and Roll, Hoochie Coo,' Dies at 77
'With a career spanning six decades, the legendary Rick Derringer left an indelible mark on the music industry as a guitarist, singer-songwriter and producer,' Wilson said in a statement on Facebook. He didn't disclose a cause of death but said Derringer died in Ormond Beach, Florida. 'Derringer's legacy extends beyond his music, entertaining fans with his signature energy and talent. His passing leaves a void in the music world, and he will be deeply missed by fans, colleagues and loved ones.'

Wilson wrote that 'out of respect for Rick Derringer's family and loved ones, details regarding funeral arrangements and memorial services will be announced' at a later date.
Derringer was born in Celina, Ohio, in 1947. He first broke through with his band The McCoys in the '60s, with 'Hang on Sloopy' topping the Hot 100 in 1965. Their next single, a cover of the song 'Fever,' peaked at No. 7 on the chart.
By the '70s, Derringer found further success with his song 'Rock and Roll, Hoochie Coo.' Johnny Winter first released a version of the song in 1970 on the album Johnny Winter And, which featured Derringer and fellow McCoys members Randy Jo Hobbs and Randy Zehringer. Derringer released his own version in 1973, with that one hitting No. 23 on the Hot 100.
Derringer worked with Johnny's brother Edgar Winter as well, producing his songs 'Frankenstein' and 'Free Ride.' He also wrote and performed 'Real American,' which appeared on the WWF's Wrestling Album that he produced. That song would become Hulk Hogan's theme.
Derringer was prolific, working with a range of major acts including Cyndi Lauper, Kiss, Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Bonnie Tyler and Ringo Starr. He produced 'Weird Al' Yankovic's first six albums, winning a Grammy for 'Eat It' (a parody of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It') in 1984 for best comedy recording.
'I'm very sad to say that my friend, rock guitar legend Rick Derringer, has passed,' Yankovic wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. 'He had an enormous impact on my life and will be missed greatly.'

A Jurassic Park sequel is one of the Netflix sci-fi movies you need to watch (August 2025)

In Weird Science, Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play Gary and Wyatt, two nerdy teenagers who want to be popular. One night, the duo creates the perfect woman on Wyatt's computer. After a magical power surge, the boys' creation comes to life as Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), a beautiful superhuman who serves Gary and Wyatt. With Lisa by their side, the teens gain the confidence they need to throw a party in hopes of winning over their high school crushes. Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) From the late '90s through 2008, Brendan Fraser was a legitimate action star thanks to The Mummy franchise. One month before The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was released in August 2008, Fraser headlined Journey to the Center of the Earth, an updated adaptation of Jules Verne's 1864 novel of the same name. Professor Trevor Anderson (Fraser) embarks on an expedition to Iceland with his 13-year-old nephew, Sean (Josh Hutcherson), to search for his missing brother. With the help of an Icelandic guide (Anita Briem), Trevor discovers Verne's novel is a legitimate map to the center of the Earth. Although they reach the Earth's center, the trio realizes they must escape or face the same tragic fate as Trevor's brother. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) What more can be said about Jurassic Park? The movie remains a landmark achievement in sci-fi filmmaking. The sequel was never going to reach the heights of the original. However, The Lost World: Jurassic Park deserves more credit for being an exciting blockbuster. Four years after the events in Jurassic Park, the greedy capitalist, Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard), becomes the new CEO of InGen. Feeling like there's a market for dinosaurs, Ludlow sends a group of mercenaries to Isla Sorna, aka Site B, to save the remaining dinosaurs in hopes of opening Jurassic Park in California. Learning about InGen's new plans, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) recruits Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) and a small team to disrupt Ludlow's mission. Even with inferior characters, Steven Spielberg's sequel still soars when the movie features numerous battles between man and dinosaur. Those pesky raptors remain as terrifying as ever. Stream The Lost World: Jurassic Park on Netflix. Lost in Starlight (2025) South Korean filmmaker Han Ji-won successfully helmed a sci-fi anime romance made for adults in Lost in Starlight. Set in 2050, Lost in Starlight explores the budding relationship between Nan-young (Kim Tae-ri) and Jay (Hong Kyung). Nan-young is an astronaut who dreams of leading an expedition to Mars. Jay is a musician and handyman. After Jay agrees to fix Nan-young's record player, the two begin spending more time together. What starts as a worker-client relationship eventually transforms into a loving partnership. For the first time in her life, Nan-young might have something to live for other than a life in space. Lost in Starlight puts some of your favorite adult dramas to shame because of its moving depiction of love and affection. Stream Lost in Starlight on Netflix. Sound & Fury (2019) Sturgill Simpson is no ordinary country singer. The Grammy-winning artist is more of an outlaw musician, like Johnny Cash, than a traditional country singer, like Garth Brooks. Simpson is fearless in his pursuit of new sounds, experimenting with different genres along the way. In 2019, Simpson released his fourth album, Sound & Fury, accompanied by a dystopian Netflix anime movie of the same name. Set to the songs on the album, Sound & Fury follows an enigmatic driver who battles several deadly opponents in a post-apocalyptic world. Think of Sound & Fury as Mad Max mixed with anime. 'KPop Demon Hunters' heads to select theaters for sing-along event
Get ready to sing your hearts out and seal the Honmoon with a "KPop Demon Hunters" sing-along. The hit Netflix animated film is coming to select theaters for one weekend this month, the streaming platform announced Tuesday. A series of screenings of the film will take place across the U.S. and Canada on Aug. 23 and 24. The limited theatrical screening event will be a sing-along version of the movie, according to a press release. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 6 a.m. PT. News of the sing-along event comes one day after the film's viral song, "Golden," reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song, which is by the fictional K-pop girl group Huntr/x and performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna and REI AMI, made history as the first No. 1 Hot 100 hit by a female K-pop group, with nearly 32 million streams, 7,000 sales, and 8.4 million radio airplay impressions in the United States, according to Billboard. The track also continues to rise on the charts for a seventh consecutive week, surpassing 3 billion global streams to date, according to a press release. The achievement also marks the first Hot 100 No. 1 by any act with a fictional background since "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Encanto in March 2022, as well as the first female group track to do so since Destiny's Child in 2001. The soundtrack has also claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Soundtracks chart, dominating for a seventh week. The "KPop Demon Hunters" soundtrack continues to hold steady at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, recording its best week yet with 100,000 equivalent album units. The album, associated with the animated action-fantasy film of the same title, has grown in popularity each week since its release. The action-packed film, which premiered June 20, follows a world-renowned K-pop girl group balancing their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters. The film has become a global streaming sensation on Netflix, with 158.8 million views since its debut, ranking among the streamer's most popular titles ever. It's been in the Netflix Top 10 for seven weeks, according to Variety. The movie stars Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo. Knowing how important the soundtrack would be, directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans collaborated with experienced K-pop producers. "Because we wanted the music to be really incredible and really speak to the K-pop fans and be legitimately fit into the K-pop space, we felt that it was important to partner with a Korean label," Kang said during a Netflix press interview, per BBC.

'What's Happening!!' star Danielle Spencer dies at 60
Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Former actor Danielle Spencer died Monday at age 60, CBS 6 in Richmond, Va., and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. Spencer became a veterinarian in Los Angeles after graduating Tuskegee University in 1993. She practiced in Richmond since 2014 and played a veterinarian in the 1997 film As Good As It Gets. As a child actor, she played Dee on What's Happening!! From 1976 to 1979. She reprised the role in the '80s revival What's Happening Now! Her What's Happening!! co-star Haywood Nelson announced her death on Instagram and confirmed it to The Hollywood Reporter. "We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer," Nelson wrote. "We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, 'What's Happening' cast member, veterinarian animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine." Dr. Spencer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. She died at a Richmond hospital of cancer.
