Richard Gere pays tribute to Dalai Lama at leader's 90th birthday
Receiving blessings from the Dalai Lama in person, Gere respectfully kissed his hands and bowed down before making a speech.
Recalling his teachings, he said: 'Every moment is a birthday and that's what we should be living by.'
'Speaking for all the westerners,' he added, 'we've never seen someone like this, who embodies selflessness, complete love, compassion and wisdom.'
Richard Gere converted to Buddhism in 1978 and became more deeply involved in the religion after meeting Tibetan Buddhist monks and, notably, the Dalai Lama.

Furious Kanye West fans demand REFUNDS after rapper's Shanghai concert: 'Worst concert ever'
Kanye West left furious fans demanding a refund after turning up late to perform his China show on Friday due to bad weather conditions, according to reports. The disgraced 48-year-old rapper, who now goes by Ye, was nearly an hour late to perform at the Shanghai Stadium on Friday because of heavy rain which soaked audiences in the open-air arena. While the set was scheduled for 7.30pm, it has been said that Kanye didn't take to the stage until 8.10pm, according to local media, and by this point the crowd – made up of around 70,000 people - were restless and chanting for their money back. Following the gig, Kanye took to social media where he praised audiences for their 'energy'. Posting on X, formerly Twitter, he said: 'Thank you to my fans in China and the Chinese government. The energy was amazing. 'Love all of you forever Can't wait till the next show.' Although Kanye appeared to ignore the backlash, some furious fans took to social media to complain about the show – and one went as far as saying it was the 'worst concert' they've been to. One said: 'Shanghai consumers DO NOT PLAY. Massive crowd was shouting REFUND after Ye was late 40 minutes to his concert.' Another wrote: 'So I've been a fan of Kanye West since I was a teen. MBDTF [My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy] opened my ears to the sonics in music. Was hard to get tix for him in Shanghai but got it. 'Was hyped af. Couldn't even sleep night before. But. Worst concert I've ever been to. @kanyewest u can be better.' [sic] In a follow up post, they claimed Kanye was 45 minutes late and was 'mostly lip synching.' They added: 'His microphone must have been up less than 20% of the time. 'For the encore, he disappeared for over 20 minutes at one point as tracks like Wolves just played out with him nowhere in sight. I could have just played your music at home man. Came to see you perform????' Reddit users, however, were much less forgiving. Taking to the social media site, one said: 'At this point, buying tix to see this clown is on the same level as buying tickets to Fyre Festival.' 'If you go see Kanye, that's on you,' said another. A third continued: 'Kanye fans get everything they deserve.' Kanye was spotted landing in China on July 11 after fleeing Los Angeles. He flashed a peace sign as he left Shanghai Pudong International Airport with his wife Bianca Censori on Friday morning. Kanye was dressed in all black, sporting a hoodie with a vest and trousers while also covering his face with a pair of sunglasses. The American star was covered by an umbrella as he made his way to a waiting car outside the terminal following his commercial flight. Hours before, the couple were pictured making their way through Los Angeles International Airport to catch a plane. Kanye and the Australian architect, 30, bypassed any VIP perks, and were seen standing in line for security with the rest of the crowd. The couple made their way through the line and a TSA worker was seen checking Kanye's passport to identify him. The duo did not appear to have any carry-on luggage with them. Five beef patties, four cheese slices, bacon, lettuce, tomato … Burger King's sumo of a burger enters the ring
Japan can legitimately claim to be home to some of the best food on the planet. But it usually has little appetite for supersizing it. That changed on Friday with Burger King's gargantuan but curiously named Baby Body Burger, tipping the scales at nearly 680g (1.5lb). As part of a collaboration with the Japan Sumo Association, whose July wrestling tournament has just started, the burger checks in at 1,876 calories. Sumo wrestlers would only need about four of these to get their average daily caloric needs; a mere mortal would need just one to one-and-a-half. And, at ¥2,590 (£13.05), it's nearly twice the price of a one-patty Whopper with cheese. Skipping breakfast, I went to my local Burger King at about 10.30am to get a jump on the lunch rush to ensure I'd secure one of the limited-edition heavyweights. I was half expecting to see a long queue. But nope, no wait. A few minutes after ordering at the self-service kiosk, my meal arrived. The burger stack is thick and impressive: five charbroiled beef patties, four cheddar cheese slices, bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickles on a sesame seed bun topped with mayonnaise, mustard and an umami-infused, tomato paste-based Aurora sauce. 'This could dislocate my jaw,' joked a woman splitting one with her family. Dripping with cheese and condiments, the burger makes for a savoury taste mix and looks enticing. But first, more napkins, as this can get messy. (I wore a dark-pink shirt to avoid dripped-condiment shame.) The first round of bites requires sinking the teeth in it at a 45-degree angle, not vertically. Even then, my nose kept acquiring a slathering of sauces until I got past the burger's edges. The staff will cut the sumo burger in half, if requested. The denseness and thickness of the five industrial patties, unfortunately, overwhelm the cheddar and sauces beyond the edges. The meat appears to have absorbed my cheese, too. And I had to check to see if there was any bacon. There was. Going towards the centre, it becomes drier. (My recommendation to Burger King would be to offer a side tub of the tangy thousand island-like sauce as a dip.) Sitting through the lunch service, I only saw one other person eating the sumo burger. But online reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with only some gripes about the high price and even one adding a Whopper side order. Oh, and I did eat it all, although over 30 minutes, along with a few fries and a Coke Zero to maintain my nutritional balance. I can now proudly display my Baby Body Burger sticker with the caption 'I did it' that comes with every order.
