clinched the
FIDE
Women's Grand Prix 2024-25 (Pune leg) title on Wednesday, edging out China's Zhu Jiner on superior tie-breaks after both players finished with identical scores.
Humpy secured victory in her final round by defeating Bulgaria's Nurgyul Salimova, ending the tournament with seven points. Zhu Jiner also notched up a win against Russia's Polina Shuvalova in her last game to match Humpy's tally.
'Humpy Koneru and Zhu Jiner both won their final round games and ended the FIDE Women's Grand Prix tied for first, but it's Humpy who takes the top spot thanks to superior tiebreaks!' FIDE posted on 'X'.
The day before, Humpy and Zhu were tied at six points each after the penultimate round. Humpy managed to hold Alina Kashlinskaya to a draw in a tense game, while Zhu defeated India's Divya Deshmukh in a sharp tactical contest.
In other final-round results, India's R Vaishali was held to a draw by Georgia's Salome Melia, while Divya Deshmukh also drew her game against Poland's top-ranked player Alina Kashlinskaya.
Dronavalli Harika shared the point with Mongolia's Munguntuul Batkhuyag in her final round clash.

KSCA officials quit hours after HC shield from arrest
Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.

India's 16-member squad endured a shambolic campaign at the Archery World Cup 2025 Stage 3 after falling short in securing medals across recurve and compound events in Antalya. The Antalya leg, which commenced on Wednesday and will conclude on Sunday, will not feature an Indian archer competing in the singles event for medals, according to Four-time Olympian and India's seasoned archer Deepika Kumari, who had clinched bronze in Shanghai, was defeated 6-0 by Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion An San of the Republic of Korea in the second round. An San later squared off against Simranjeet Kaur in a closely contested quarter-final on Saturday. The recurve men's team of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Atanu Das and Parth Salunkhe crashed out following a 5-1 defeat against France in the third-place playoff. In the compound archery events, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the reigning Asian Games champion, returned empty-handed after losing to Estonia's Meeri-Marita Paas 152-150 in the second round. Madhura Dhamangaonkar, who secured a gold medal in women's individual compound in Shanghai last month, suffered a bitter defeat against Mexico's Mariana Bernal 159-152 in the quarter-finals.
