Bruce County siblings to share cut of $98,000 lottery prize

After 30 years of playing the lottery together, four Bruce County siblings finally had the winning ticket.
'I took our ticket to the store and scanned it using the ticket checker,' said Ron Mahon of Southampton. 'When I saw that it was a big winner, I had to double check. I may have let out a little scream too.'
Bursting with excitement, Ron said he called his siblings one by one to share the incredible news.
'I thought he was messing with me and had trouble believing him at first,' said James Mahon of Port Elgin. 'I still can't fully process it!'
'We're all so fortunate and blessed to have won this prize,' added Marie Jones of Southampton. 'All these years of playing really paid off. I feel overjoyed!'
Each sibling said they have unique plans for their share of the windfall from the April 12 draw.
James will take his time deciding how to use the money. Marie looks forward to purchasing a new washing machine and refreshing her home with some new furniture. Ron plans to deposit his winnings in the bank, while Joyce will buy a new mattress for a better night's sleep.
The winning ticket was purchased at Rexall on Albert Street South in Southampton.

‘Very impressive new facility': Winnipeg's newest firehall now open
Winnipeg's newest firehall is officially in operation. The city unveiled the new Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) Station #9 in Windsor Park. WFPS Chief Christian Schmidt said this new station has been designed to fit how Winnipeg is growing. 'This particular station combines two different older stations; the previous Station #9 on Marion Street and the previous Station #15, which was on this exact site,' Schmidt said. 'These two smaller stations had gotten older over time and had less space and capacity. This station places response efficiency and environmental efficiency at the forefront.' The new station has five bays with a fire engine and crew. A rescue unit, the hazardous materials team, an ambulance and its crew, and a fire investigator are all housed at the station. The station is also the first city building to have geothermal ground source heat pumps for both heating and cooling. The building is expected to reduce emissions by 98.6 per cent compared to other buildings its size. 'The team has worked hard to reclaim wood from the previous buildings for use in this station and includes details down to ensuring that the shrubs around this property are drought resistant,' said Schmidt. It's one of the greenest buildings in the city's inventory, and it's going to help us deliver faster, more effective emergency service to Windsor Park and the surrounding neighbourhoods,' said Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham. The $16 million building also features recovery ventilators, a training room, an air compressor, and bifold bay doors, which are supposed to reduce response times by 15 seconds. 'This reflects the kind of investment that we are making as a city and that our city needs to keep making as we grow - investments that strengthen public safety, public health, investments that modernize our infrastructure, investments that reduce our long-term impact on our environment,' said Gillingham. This station is part of the WFPS master plan that came out in 2020, which highlights the need for stations in more strategic locations, which in turn will help with response times.

Intersection on University Avenue will be closed to vehicles, LRT, pedestrians
University Avenue will be closed at 114 Street from June 27 to July 1. (Google Images) The intersection at University Avenue and 114 Street will be closed from June 27 to July 1 so crews can work on LRT track rehabilitation. The city said the work is required to address aging infrastructure and improve the longevity of Edmonton's LRT system. While crews are working, University Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic heading west and east. Vehicles travelling west on the road will be able to turn north and south onto 114 Street. University ave and 114 st University Avenue will be closed at 114 Street from June 27 to July 1. (Supplied) Those heading south on Groat Road are encouraged to use 87 Avenue. Pedestrians are advised to use alternate routes across 114 Street at 78 Avenue or 83 Avenue. Paths adjacent to the intersection will remain open. McKernan/Belgravia LRT station will be closed during the construction. Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) will run a split route. South of the intersection, trains will run between Century Park and South Campus/Fort Edmonton Park stations. North of the construction, Capital Line trains will run between Health Sciences/Jubilee and Clareview stations. Service on the Metro Line, which runs between NAIT and Health Science/Jubilee stations, will be unaffected. Regular LRT service will resume on Canada Day. There will be LRT replacement service available between South Campus/Fort Edmonton Park and University stations between 8 p.m. on June 27 to the end of service on June 30. Replacement buses will run every seven to eight minutes June 27 to 29 and every five minutes on June 30. ETS recommends riders transfer to LRT replacement service at Health Sciences/Jubilee for ease of access to buses.

Quebec bans transport of some wild animals in nearly 100 communities over rabies risk

The ban is in force until Aug. 17 and applies to raccoons, striped skunks, grey foxes, red foxes, as well as coyotes and their hybrids. Communities affected by the ban are located in the Montérégie and Estrie regions to the south and east of Montreal. The government says relocating an injured, orphaned or nuisance animal can spread rabies into new areas. Thirty-two cases of raccoon rabies have been detected in the province between December 2024 and June 12. Residents of the Estrie and Montérégie regions are also asked to report sightings of raccoons, skunks or foxes that appear dead, disoriented, injured, or aggressive.
