Egypt's Investment Minister visits India to strengthen economic ties, attract investment
Egypt's Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Hassan El-Khatib, has embarked on an official visit to India to bolster economic relations between the two countries across trade, industry, and investment sectors. The visit aims to attract more Indian investments to Egypt by showcasing the country's investment-friendly policies and key opportunities across various sectors.
During his visit, El-Khatib is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with several senior Indian officials, industry leaders, and business representatives from nine major companies and organizations. Discussions will focus on Egypt's current economic policies aimed at facilitating investment and foreign trade while highlighting lucrative opportunities for Indian investors in productive and service sectors.
The minister is set to meet with S. Jaishankar, India's Minister of External Affairs, and Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry of India, to explore ways to deepen bilateral trade and investment cooperation. Additionally, El-Khatib will participate in an Egypt-India roundtable discussion at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) headquarters, where he will engage with CEOs of major Indian companies and industrial sector leaders.
As part of his agenda, the minister will also hold discussions with executives from leading Indian firms operating in key sectors of mutual interest, including automotive, chemical industries, and energy. These meetings are expected to facilitate new investments and expand the presence of Indian companies in Egypt.
Trade exchange between Egypt and India has reached $7.26bn, with over 50 Indian companies investing approximately $8 billion in agriculture, chemicals, renewable energy, telecommunications, and information technology, according to Egyptian Minister of Communication and Information Technology Amr Talaat. The visit is seen as a significant step toward further strengthening economic ties and unlocking new opportunities for collaboration between the two nations.

Reports: No G7 Summit Invite for India Yet
Rana Atef Canada didn't invite India so far for the upcoming G7 summit scheduled to take place between June 15 and June 17 in Canada, according to The Tribune after citing official sources. The sources told the Indian website: 'No advance preparations have been made ahead of a high-level dignitary visit such as that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making it clear that India will not participate in this year's G7 summit in Canada. PM Modi has attended the summit for the past six consecutive years, making this the first time India will be absent from the event." Traditionally, the host country moderates guest invitations, agenda organization and the overall tone of the summit. This allows the host to align the event with its priorities and foreign policy objectives. The G7 comprises the world's most industrialised economies: the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada. The European Union (EU), the IMF, the World Bank and the UN are also invited to attend. This year's summit will be hosted by Canada. The relationships between Canada and India have deteriorated following the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in June 2023. Tensions escalated after then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the incident, a claim India strongly rejected as 'baseless'. Al-Mashat: EU's recent MFA plays critical role in driving reforms
Cairo – June 3, 2025: Negotiations are underway over structural reforms linked to the economic component of Egypt's national program, supported by the European Union's €4 billion Macroeconomic Financial Assistance (MFA). Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation (MPEDIC), Rania Al-Mashat, highlighted the critical role of the MFA in driving these reforms and pointed to the forthcoming launch of a €1.8 billion EU-backed investment guarantee mechanism. Al-Mashat met with Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, Head of the EU Delegation to Egypt, along with senior EU officials, to discuss ongoing cooperation under the strategic partnership between Egypt and the EU. These reforms, involving multiple Egyptian entities, focus on enhancing macroeconomic stability, boosting competitiveness, improving the business environment, and advancing green transformation. They form a key part of Egypt's wider development narrative aimed at sustainable economic growth. This initiative aims to expand foreign direct investment opportunities and support private sector development across Egypt. She also addressed the 'Mediterranean Charter,' which signals a strategic evolution in the EU's approach to southern neighbors. The Charter shifts focus from broad regional frameworks to more targeted bilateral partnerships, aligning with Egypt's national priorities in economic development, energy, transportation, job creation, and regional stability. The Charter is built on two main pillars: fostering economic stability and investment, and encouraging European companies to expand in southern neighboring countries. This approach is expected to facilitate technology transfer, boost trade, and accelerate economic growth throughout Egypt and the wider region. Between 2025 and 2027, Egypt and the EU will implement a new cooperation framework as part of their comprehensive strategic partnership. This framework emphasizes clear priorities and actionable measures to enhance collaboration. The European Union remains one of Egypt's most important development partners, with the current cooperation portfolio reaching approximately €1.3 billion. This includes grants and blended finance supporting vital sectors such as transport, water, agriculture, renewable energy, social protection, governance, and institutional capacity building. Al-Mashat noted that the strategic partnership framework enhances policy alignment and cooperation in response to evolving regional and global challenges, reaffirming the EU's commitment to supporting Egypt's sustainable development goals.

Estonia & Germany Embassies in Cairo Celebrate MFC Co-Chairmanship End
Rana Atef The Estonian Ambassador to Cairo, Ingrid Amer, hosted an event to commemorate the conclusion of Estonia and Germany's co-chairmanship of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC), officially passing the chairmanship to Finland. In her remarks, Ambassador Amer underscored Estonia's enduring commitment to media freedom, highlighting the country's role in defending free expression and combating disinformation. 'Over the past two years, Estonia has co-chaired the Media Freedom Coalition working together with all MFC members to defend press freedom,' she stated. She expressed confidence in Finland's ability to lead the coalition forward, noting, 'As neighbors, we can say with confidence the leadership stays in very good hands. We share a deep commitment to democracy, transparency, and independent journalism.' Ambassador Amer emphasized the vital role of a free and open media in sustaining informed societies and safeguarding diverse voices. 'Media pluralism and digital literacy have been key priorities during our term. While our co-chairmanship ends today, our commitment remains strong,' she concluded, thanking the MFC member states for their shared efforts in defending journalists and independent voices worldwide. On her side, Anita Klein, the Deputy of the German Ambassador to Cairo, said: 'I would like to extend my sincere thanks for today's invitation and, above all, to express our gratitude to Estonia for its dedicated two-year co-chairmanship of the Media Freedom Coalition. Over the past year and a half, Germany has had the pleasure of sharing this responsibility with Estonia — a partnership we have truly enjoyed. While my own role was modest, the positive impact of our joint efforts is evident, and I must say, I have developed a deep appreciation for Estonia and its commitment to media freedom.' Taking up the role of incoming chair, Eero Väisänen, Deputy Head of Mission and Counsellor at the Finnish Embassy in Cairo, echoed the sentiment of continuity and shared values. 'This is a topic close to our hearts — not only for Estonia and Germany, but also for Finland,' he said. 'We have a long and consistent tradition of upholding freedom of expression, both domestically and as part of our foreign and development policy.' Väisänen noted Finland's historical legacy of press freedom, referencing a 1776 law, 'Even in countries such as Egypt, where press freedom faces many challenges, we must remain humble and receptive. Issues like online harassment of female journalists and the spread of misinformation are global challenges — including in Finland,' he added.
