Nebraska, Arizona State seek coronation in inaugural tournament
Take Monday's first-round game between Nebraska (17-14) and Arizona State (13-19) at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It's definitely postseason basketball, but it's a clash of two teams riding five-game losing streaks that haven't played in three weeks.
It's also two programs in a state of flux due to injuries, transfers, coaching moves and more. It almost feels like the Cornhuskers and Sun Devils must fit this game into their busy schedules as if it were a dentist appointment instead of a trip to Sin City.
"Obviously a crazy time preparing and doing everything for the tournament," Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said. "At the same time, with the landscape of college basketball right now, we're doing a lot of work as far as trying to figure out our roster for next season. And visits and Zooms and going out and seeing guys."
Nebraska hasn't played since March 9, when a loss in its Big Ten regular-season finale to Iowa kept the Cornhuskers out of the conference tournament. Since that time, top assistant coach Adam Howard has departed to join the staff of new North Carolina State coach Will Wade.
Nonetheless, it's a chance for Nebraska's seniors -- including first-team all-Big Ten guard Brice Williams (20 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists per game) and forward Juwan Gary (14 points, 4.8 rebounds) -- to write a different ending to their college careers.
One senior, 7-foot-1 center Braxton Meah, is a game-time decision due to a lingering back injury that kept him out of Nebraska's past two games. And another, point guard Rollie Worster, has been shut down after fighting through a foot injury for the final three months of the season.
"He's been playing with a plate in his shoe," Hoiberg said. "He's been really, really sore. It just got to the point to where it's tough to put a lot of weight on it. The decision was made to put him in a boot."
Meanwhile, Arizona State hasn't played since March 11, when the Sun Devils dropped their Big 12 tournament opener to Kansas State.
Though the Sun Devils lost 11 of their final 12 games to clinch their fourth losing record in the past five seasons, head coach Bobby Hurley reportedly will return for an 11th season in Tempe, Ariz.
Arizona State will play without fourth-leading scorer Joson Sanon (11.9 points per game); the freshman guard -- a Top 25 recruit in the 2024 class -- already has announced a transfer to St. John's.
On the flip side, the Sun Devils are adding wing Marcus Adams via the transfer portal, On3 reported Saturday. Adams rang up 16.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for Cal State Northridge in 2024-25. Of course, Adams will not be eligible to play in the Crown, a 16-team tournament that runs through next Sunday.
The Sun Devils figure to have just seven scholarship players available Monday, but that includes all five starters. Senior guards BJ Freeman (13.7 points per game) and Alston Mason (13.5 points, 4 assists) and freshman big Jayden Quaintance (9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks) lead the way.
Whichever team snaps its five-game losing streak will advance to the quarterfinals Wednesday against the winner of Monday's game between Georgetown (17-15) and Washington State (19-14).

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Bryce Underwood is ready to have all eyes on him this season, playing quarterback for No. 14 Michigan hailed as the top-rated recruit in the country. He's also ready to take some hits. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Underwood told two reporters earlier this summer — at a car dealership that leveraged his name, image and likeness to draw fans for autographs — that he has put on 15 pounds of muscle to get bigger, stronger and quicker. 'It's made me more explosive,' Underwood said. 'I feel way more faster.' The Wolverines trail four Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25, but Underwood said people should expect a lot from them on both sides of the ball. 'Offense and defense that they never seen before,' he said. Second-year coach Sherrone Moore, who might name a starting quarterback on Monday, said Underwood's talent and comprehension of the offense under new coordinator Chip Lindsey are what have stood out the most so far from the freshman. 'Consistency is the biggest thing,' he said. 'Don't turn the ball over, command the offense, make plays.' Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said the governing body made errors interpreting its bylaws, adding that conclusions were made that were contrary to the evidence. 'We will appeal this decision to ensure a fair result and we will consider all other options,' Manuel said. On the ground Michigan expects to take pressure off Underwood with a potentially dynamic duo in the backfield. Justice Haynes, who started six games last season at Alabama, and sophomore Jordan Marshall, who ran for 100 yards against the Crimson Tide in a bowl game win, are expected to split time at running back to give the team quite a 1-2 punch. 'They compete in the weight room every single day, push each other and they just work as hard as they can,' Underwood said. Over-under Michigan was 8-5 in Moore's debut season, closing with three straight wins, including a fourth in a row against rival Ohio State and over Alabama in a bowl game. The Wolverines are projected to have similar results this year. The Wolverines over-under is 8 1/2 wins, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Michigan's mantra Robby Emery, director of character development for Michigan football, has tried to set the tone with coaches and players to control what they can and to let the rest go. 'We're really living by this motto of TNT — today not tomorrow,' Moore said. The schedule Michigan opens with New Mexico on Aug. 30 under the lights at the Big House. The Wolverines travel to play Oklahoma, where Moore was an offensive lineman nearly 20 years ago, in Week 2. Moore will miss a home game against Central Michigan and the Big Ten opener at Nebraska. The Wolverines play rival Michigan State on the road Oct. 25 and close the regular season at home against rival and third-ranked Ohio State on Nov. 29. MLB is about to toss a changeup with its media partnerships. Apple TV+ potentially could soon end its union with MLB and Netflix is set to acquire the Home Run Derby, among a myriad of changes, according to Yahoo. Apple leaving would remove its 'Friday Night Baseball' package and NBC and Peacock could swoop in to have Friday and Sunday exclusive games, plus wild-card playoff contests, according to the report. On a visit to New England this summer, Amendola sought out the rookie out of Eastern Washington. In a few moments, Amendola tried to share as much as he could. 'I grabbed him and I said I noticed his film, and the buzz around his game,' said Amendola. 'We talked pretty quickly; I tried to keep it moving. That's why 'I'm going through and watching that right now. So, trying to just kind of see how he ran through his offense with McDaniels when he was here, and I learn everything I can through that,' Chism said. 'He's super twitchy. He knows how to release. If the guy's playing off, the guy's playing press, he knows how to sit in zones, but he also knows how to win versus man. I don't think a lot of people — at least me, like before becoming a Patriot — I didn't watch a lot of him. But now I'm watching it and he can really win versus man, too, not just a zone catcher.' 'Efton is a guy who went to two All-Star Games,' said Eliot Wolf, the Patriots' executive vice president of player personnel. 'He went to the Hula Bowl and then the East-West, and no one really guarded him there, either. That's when he came on my radar a little bit. 'Our scouts obviously liked him, as well, but I didn't watch him until after those All-Star Games, and definitely thought he was a draftable talent. Maybe didn't have the 40-yard dash that was applicable to get him drafted, but you know, the game is played between the white lines and he's been a phenomenal worker.' 'His suddenness. His quickness,' he said. 'I love that ability to attack the ball, and show the ball skills. His ability to go get the ball, and how he uses his hands. Also, it feels like he's tough. He seems like he has a good feel for the game, and the speed of the game isn't too much for him. 'The biggest step for a young receiver is understanding overages. But from what I can see, he has a pretty good handle on things.' Amendola played in New England from 2013-17, and was a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams. In that stretch, he had 230 catches for 2,383 yards and 12 touchdowns. Amendola spent a lot of time watching Wes Welker and Julian Edelman video when he first arrived in Foxborough, as McDaniels was hoping to have him follow the same path. Amendola said he's honored to help provide a template for a prospect such as Chism. 'It makes me happy,' Amendola said. 'Josh and I spent a lot of time together, and we share a lot of the same mentalities in terms of how to play offense, being dependable, and being tough.
