Subodh Bhave: Every Indian should be aware of their own culture and heritage

Time of India15-05-2025

Subodh Bhave, one of Marathi cinema's most acclaimed actors, is known for choosing characters that leave a lasting impact. From the layered performance in 'Vaalvi
'
to the grandeur of 'Balgandharva
'
and emotionally rich roles in 'Ani Dr.
Kashinath Ghanekar
' and 'Katyar Kaljat Ghusli,
'
Subodh's career is a tapestry of versatile and meaningful portrayals. His latest film, 'His Story of Itihaas,' sees him stepping into the shoes of a teacher—one who dares to question systemic narratives and probe deeper into the truths of our past. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, Subodh reflects on how the film affected him personally and where it stands in his long, illustrious journey.
'It was a learning experience for me as well.'
When asked if playing this questioning, insightful teacher changed his outlook toward
education
or history, Subodh shared, 'After playing this character, I learned a lot—many new facts and insights. It was a learning experience for me personally too.' He believes that there is a profound difference between reading
history
in school and truly understanding it. 'As Manpreet says in the film, reading history is one thing, but connecting with it—really understanding it—makes us feel closer to our ancestors. That connection is very important,' he added. The role, he said, helped him 'demystify a lot of things' and opened up new perspectives.

'Every Indian should be aware of their own culture and heritage.'
On being asked where he places this film in his career, Subodh was reflective yet clear. 'At this stage in my career, every role is important—and this one is just as significant,' he affirmed. But he also acknowledged that this role is particularly socially relevant. 'As citizens of India, we should know about these things. This film raises questions about our identity, and every Indian should be aware of their own culture and heritage,' he emphasized.
Subodh also praised the recent move by the Government of India to include more aspects of India's real history in school textbooks. 'That's a great step,' he said, hinting that cinema, education, and cultural introspection must walk hand-in-hand.
With this film, Subodh Bhave once again proves that he's not just a performer, but also a thinker—an artist who uses his craft to reflect, question, and engage with society's deeper truths.

Aruna Irani reveals was battled breast cancer twice, refused chemo for work: ‘How would I shoot if I lose hair'

Veteran actor Aruna Irani recently opened up about her health scare from the past. She shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer twice, for which she chose to battle in secret. Aruna shared that she first fell unwell while working, which later turned out to be cancer. However, she revealed that she refused chemotherapy as she was worried about losing out on work. Talking to Lehren, Aruna shared how she could sense something was wrong while she was at work. "Aise hi ek din shooting kar rahi thi, pata nahi mujhe kaise pata laga par maine bola 'Mujhe kuch lag raha hai' (One day, I was shooting as usual. I don't know how, but I just felt something and said, 'I feel like something's wrong.')," she said. When Aruna consulted a doctor, she was told it was just a minor lump. However, she firmly insisted on having it removed immediately. Although she was told to undergo chemotherapy, the actor skipped it thinking about work. "Then the doctor said you will have to take a pill and I chose that as I was working. How would I shoot if I lose my hair," she said. As a result, her cancer returned in 2020. Right before the covid-19 pandemic, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. But, this time she decided to follow the treatment. 'Meri hi galti thi, as pehle maine chemotherapy nahi lee thi.(It was my fault because I didn't opt for chemotherapy the first time) This time around I took it,' she shared. She shared that by then, chemotherapy had become more advanced. Although Aruna experienced some hair loss, it grew back with time. 'Still you lose a bit of your hair but woh jaldi aa bhi jaate hai( but hair grows back swiftly)," she added. Besides cancer, Aruna was also diagnosed with diabetes at 60. She also revealed that there was a time when doctors told her that her kidneys had failed. Aruna Irani made her acting debut at a young age in the 961 film Ganga Jumna. Amid Deepika Padukone's 8-hour shift demand, Sitaare Zameen Par actress Genelia D'Souza says 'not impossible' on 10-hour workdays

While several stars like Mani Ratnam, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Kritika Kamra and Chitangda Singh among others have reacted to the topic, the latest one to join them is Sitaare Zameen Par star, Genelia D'Souza read more Deepika Padukone's exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit has reignited the conversation about work-life balance in the entertainment industry. While several stars like Mani Ratnam, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Kritika Kamra and Chitangda Singh among others have reacted to the topic, the latest one to join them is Sitaare Zameen Par star, Genelia D'Souza. The actress said that working long hours is difficult but not unmanageable. 'It is tough but it is not impossible," Genelia told Zoom. 'I do work for 10 hours a day and there are days when the director asks to extend it to 11 or 12 hours. I think it's fair but we just need time to make those adjustments. When you have a day or two where you have to overdo, it's also an understanding and a process that needs to be done," she added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While the fiasco between Deepika and Vanga has been garnering headlines for quite some time, an earlier report emerged discussing the actress's demands for Spirit. 'The actor had reportedly demanded ₹25 crores for approximately 35 days of shoot, along with a 10% profit share, extensive entourage expenses, and even expressed unwillingness to deliver dialogues in Telugu—something the director felt strongly about. To top it off, confidential plot details from Spirit were allegedly leaked, which raised serious concerns among the producers," the source told News18. According to the report, Sandeep 'believes actors speaking their own lines'. 'Contrary to speculation, her restricted filming schedule of under 8 hours a day was never the primary issue. In filmmaking, working hours are fluid and depend on location, lighting, and various technical factors. You could shoot for 2 hours or 8, depending on the scene. What truly matters is flexibility, collaboration, and respect for the craft. It's about commitment. Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga believes actors speaking their own lines builds authenticity and emotional connect with the audience," the source added. Genelia is gearing up for the release of Aamir Khan starrer Sitaare Zameen Par, which is releasing this Friday at the box office.
