Grandad runs Leeds 10k for baby who died at three days old
The family are running under the team name Alice's Army and hope to raise money to support the charity to refurbish and expand the neonatal unit.Alice's parents Cara and Lee Haigh began fundraising in 2023, when the family ran their first Leeds 10k, raising £2,000.This year four of Mick's grandsons – and Cara and Lee's nephews - Elliot Ratcliffe, Thomas Ratcliffe, Owen Davies and Ryan Davies, are running for the first time.Mr Haigh said despite it being their first time he expected they would be waiting for him at the finish line."In my younger days, when I was my grandsons' age, I did the Leeds Marathon three times."We've been training along the canal, which is pretty flat, because the course itself isn't that bad."The last bit coming into Little London from Meanwood Road. That's the hard part."We'll save ourselves for that."
The family's first 10k in 2023 was timed to mark what would have been Alice's fifth birthday."It was quite fitting for us to take part in that run," said Cara Haigh."We wanted to give something back. They do such an amazing job and such vital work that we wanted to try and raise a bit of money."The hospital's BIG Neonatal Appeal will support the refurbishment and expansion of the unit, allowing families to stay closer to their babies during treatments.It will also help fund a garden where families can reflect and relax and an indoor play area for siblings.Mrs Haigh said it had "meant the world" to have time with Alice in the room provided by the charity, and wanted to ensure other families could benefit from the support."I had never been on a neonatal unit. I hadn't seen babies that were poorly being cared for. And it really opened my eyes up and my husband Lee's eyes up to just what exactly they do."They go above and beyond for every child to try to get them home to their family."She said "unfortunately that wasn't the ending" of their story."But they work so hard to make these children better so that they can go on and live happy and healthy lives."

Jacob Bethell to captain England in T20 series against Ireland
Jacob Bethell is set to become England's youngest-ever men's captain in an international match after being selected to lead the side in three T20s in Ireland next month. The 21-year-old is on the Test fringes but he is already a white-ball mainstay and the esteem with which he is held in is emphasised by his appointment to captain England from September 17-21 in Dublin. When he does so, Bethell will eclipse the existing record held by Monty Bowden, who was 23 years and 144 days old when he oversaw England in a Test against South Africa at Cape Town in 1888-89. 'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads,' said national selector Luke Wright. 'The series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage.' Bethell has received the opportunity as Harry Brook takes a breather following the ODI and T20 series against South Africa from September 2-14, the squads for which were also announced on Friday. Assistant Marcus Trescothick will step up as head coach in Ireland, with Brendon McCullum not making the trip, reprising the role he had in England's white-ball tour of the Caribbean last winter. All-format quartet Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse have also been taken out of the firing line against Ireland, giving them a rest in preparation for this winter's blockbuster Ashes. Fast bowling duo Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson are not in any of the three squads as they start focusing on this winter's tour to Australia, which gets under way on November 21 in Perth. Mikel Arteta insists there is 'no question' Martin Odegaard still deserves to captain Arsenal after former skipper Tony Adams called for the Norwegian to be stripped of the armband. Adams, speaking at an Irish Independent Sport event in Dublin, demanded the Gunners boss make the change ahead of the new campaign, arguing 'proper player' Declan Rice was the man for the job. All the attributes Eddie Howe likes in a young player. He will gel well with our current first three midfielders and I do not see him as a step down if any of them are unable to play.
