Tech giants' indirect emissions rose 150% in three years amid AI growth, UN says

Indirect carbon emissions from the operations of four of the leading AI-focused tech companies, Amazon , Microsoft , Alphabet and Meta , rose on average by 150 per cent from 2020-2023, as they had to use more power for energy-demanding data centres, a United Nations report said on Thursday. The use of artificial intelligence is driving up global indirect emissions because of the vast amounts of energy required to power data centres, the report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN agency for digital technologies, said. Indirect emissions include those generated by purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by a company. Amazon's operational carbon emissions grew the most at 182 per cent in 2023 compared to three years before, followed by Microsoft at 155 per cent, Meta at 145 per cent and Alphabet at 138 per cent, according to the report. READ MORE The ITU tracked the greenhouse gas emissions of 200 leading digital companies between 2020 and 2023. Meta, which owns Facebook and WhatsApp, pointed Reuters to its sustainability report that said it is working to reduce emissions, energy and water used to power its data centres. The other companies did not respond immediately to requests for comment. As investment in AI increases, carbon emissions from the top-emitting AI systems are predicted to reach up to 102.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2) per year, the report stated. The data centres that are needed for AI development could also put pressure on existing energy infrastructure. 'The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving a sharp rise in global electricity demand, with electricity use by data centres increasing four times faster than the overall rise in electricity consumption,' the report found. It also highlighted that although a growing number of digital companies had set emissions targets, those ambitions had not yet fully translated into actual reductions of emissions. – Reuters

Classic Hits owner Bay Broadcasting set to purchase Galway Bay FM

Galway Bay FM has been purchased by Classic Hits owner Bay Broadcasting from the publishers of the Connacht Tribune. The deal is subject to approval by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and ministerial approval. Just last week, it emerged that the Connacht Tribune is set to be sold to the publisher of the Iconic group of newspapers, Malcolm Denmark, subject to CCPC approval. Galway Bay FM launched in 1989 under the name Radio West, rebranding in 1993. The Connacht Tribune Ltd, which owned a 27% stake, became sole owners in 2006. Galway Bay FM broadcasts to Galway city and county, with a market share of 34%, with listeners predominantly in the age 27 to 60 bracket. The station has a staff count of 25 at is based at Sandy Road in the city. "Galway Bay FM stands out as one of Ireland's most respected local stations, with a loyal audience and a strong local identity," said Bay Broadcasting director Kevin Branigan. "It's one of the most enduring local radio stations in the country and its track record speaks for itself. We look forward to working with the excellent team in Galway Bay FM and to continuing the station's proud position as the leading radio service in Galway." Bay Broadcasting is privately-owned and co-founded by Mike Ormonde and Mr Branigan. It operates Dublin music radio stations Radio Nova and Sunshine 106.8, along with Ireland's Classic Hits Radio, which broadcasts to Dublin Cork, Limerick, and Galway. With the addition of Galway Bay FM, Bay Broadcasting will become the second largest radio group in Ireland - and the only Irish-owned radio group - now larger than Onic (formerly Wireless), operators of FM104/Q102 in Dublin, 96FM/103FM in Cork, Live 95 in Limerick, and LMFM in Louth/Meath. The purchase of Galway Bay FM will give Bay 810,000 listeners compared to Onic's 796,000 listeners. The acquisition has already been approved by Coimisiún na Meán. It stands Bay Broadcasting only behind Bauer, whose stations include Newstalk, Today FM, RedFM 98FM, Spin South West, and Beat 102-103.

Wizz Air profit slumps on grounded planes, shares tumble

Budget carrier Wizz Air's grounded planes that are awaiting engine repairs took their toll on annual profits today, sending the shares down 23%. Wizz Air had 37 aircraft grounded as of May 9. By the end of the first half of its 2026 financial year, it expects 34 aircraft to remain grounded, with a repair shop visit expected at around 300 days. The planes have been affected by problems with RTX-owned Pratt and Whitney engines, limiting the airline's ability to increase capacity. It has issued two profit warnings in the past year. "You look at the performance of the supply chain, of the industry, and there are cracks all over the place," Chief Executive Jozsef Varadi told Reuters in an interview. Varadi previously said he expected the airline to be impacted by the engine repair issues for another two to three years. "We have the benefit of more than a year of experience operating under these unique circumstances – conditions airlines would never experience when demand exceeds supply," he said in the statement today. Operating profit for the financial year ended March 31 fell 61.7% from a year ago to 167.5 million euros missing the 246 million euros projected by analysts polled by LSEG. The London-listed shares fell 26% to 1,227p at 9.10am (GMT), having dropped 48% year-on-year to continue the carrier's streak as the worst stock performer among European airlines. Wizz Air has subsidiaries in Hungary, Britain, Abu Dhabi and Malta. That appeared to weigh on other airlines, with Lufthansa, easyjet and British Airways-owner IAG down 1.5% to 2.7%. European airlines have warned of longstanding delivery delays and uncertainty around maintaining a boom in post-COVID demand amid economic turmoil tied to US President Donald Trump's tariff threats. The sector has, however, benefited from lower fuel prices. Wizz said ticket prices were slightly lower than last year. Analysts have pointed to other potential rising costs. In particular, costs due to the retiring of Wizz's A320ceo fleet projected for next year. The company said it would not provide guidance for 2026 at this stage of the year, citing limited visibility.
