KUALA LUMPUR: Former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik got their Malaysia Masters campaign off to a composed start at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.
Fresh off their Thailand Open triumph, the world No. 3 overcame Taiwan's world No. 17 Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-18, 21-16 in a steady straight-games win to book their place in the second round.
Despite the smooth performance, Aaron admitted concerns over a short recovery period after back-to-back tournaments.
"We just finished a tournament last week, so we haven't had enough rest. But it's not really a problem," said Aaron.
"Our performance today was just okay. There's definitely room for improvement."
Next up for Aaron-Wooi Yik is another Taiwanese combination — world No. 21 Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han — whom they have never played before.
Wooi Yik acknowledged the challenge of taking on unfamiliar opponents.
"It's never easy when you haven't played a pair before," he said.
"Even in Thailand, we had to battle hard against a French pair we'd never faced. You can't afford to take anyone lightly these days."
"The level in men's doubles is incredibly high right now. Every pair brings something unique. There's no such thing as an easy match anymore."
Wooi Yik credited their coach Herry IP for keeping them on track.
"We prepare as best we can and trust the game plan. We're still learning from coach Herry, and that process is ongoing."
He added that they remain a work in progress.
"We know what we want to achieve on court, but we're still far from that level. It's a gradual journey."

Popovic tells Australia to do ‘something special' at World Cup

Coach Tony Popovic said Australia want to do 'something special' and hailed the character of his side after they qualified for a sixth successive World Cup. The Socceroos booked their ticket to North America next year with a 2-1 win Tuesday over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, joining Japan from Asian Group C and consigning the home team to another qualifying round. 'Very satisfying right now. I'm sure it'll sink in as the days go by,' said Popovic, who joins an elite group to make a World Cup as a player and a coach. The former Crystal Palace captain appeared at the 2006 tournament in Germany, where Australia made the round of 16 under Guus Hiddink. 'It's been a very intense period since I've joined, and I've loved it so far,' said Popovic, who replaced Graham Arnold in September. 'We've done the first part, qualifying automatically, and now the next part is to be bigger and better for the World Cup.' While Australia are at a sixth straight World Cup, it is the first time in 12 years that they have qualified automatically. Australia were fifth in the group when Popovic came in, reeling from a disastrous 1-0 loss to Bahrain and a 0-0 draw with Indonesia. After Australia conceded early in Jeddah, Mitch Duke teed up Connor Metcalfe and then scored the winner, before veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan saved a penalty to spark huge celebrations. 'I think that's been a characteristic from the first day I arrived, we went one-nil down against China, we came back,' said Popovic, referring to his first match in charge following Arnold's resignation. 'To do it here in this atmosphere, you know, you gotta deal with the weather as well and it's not easy, and to show that character, resilience and then quality to come back and actually take the lead and win the game, I'm delighted. 'We've built a good foundation now and we want to really get better, kick on and try and do something special at the World Cup.' For skipper Ryan it was a huge moment. He not only saved the spot kick in his 100th game for Australia, but ensured he will be at a fourth World Cup. 'The fairytale has come true,' said Ryan, 33, who is currently at French club Lens. 'The journey that we have been on to get here, I'm just so proud of everyone. 'We're going to enjoy obviously that direct qualification now. But in a week's time, or a little bit longer, the prep starts for the next goal we set ourselves.'

Asian Cup qualifiers: Malaysia tops Group F with 4-0 victory over Vietnam

The national football team in a photo call after beating Vietnam 4-0 in the second 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifying match at Bukit Jalil National Stadium last night. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): The national football team walked away winners for the first time in 11 years against Vietnam after beating them 4-0 in the second 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifying match at Bukit Jalil National Stadium here last night. Sporting a lineup of new heritage players, Peter Cklamovski's still had to spend the first half trying to get on the same wavelength and struggled to find gaps in Vietnam's defence. Their aggressive play did nearly result in a goal in the 35th minute when Dion Cools sent a blistering shot from outside the penalty box that unfortunately hit the right goalpost. The Harimau Malaya squad managed to get into gear in the second half, and new heritage player Joao Figueiredo scored in the 49th minute when his shot deflected off Vietnamese keeper Nguyen Filip into the net to make it 1-0 in favour of the hosts. Fellow heritage player Rodrigo Holgado kept the momentum up and scored from inside the penalty box 10 minutes later, and the Malaysians, sensing that the match had truly shifted in their favour, continued to press their opponents and were rewarded with a 67th minute goal by Corbin Ong. Finally, Cools made up for his missed shot at goal in the first half with a header in the 89th minute, capping a truly amazing performance for the team. The 4-0 victory means that Malaysia has taken the lead in Group F with six points, while Vietnam is now second with three points. Laos is third, also with three points, courtesy of their 2-1 win over Nepal in the other Group F qualifer in Laos and Nepal is last with no points. Malaysia will travel to Laos on Oct 9 for their third Group F match. 2027 Asian Cup Qualifier football Group F malaysia vietnam

Man City sign Cherki in time for Club World Cup

Manchester City completed the signing of French international Rayan Cherki from Lyon on Tuesday, in time to beat the deadline to register new players for the start of the Club World Cup. Cherki, 21, joins a new-look City, seeking to bounce back after a dismal trophyless season for Pep Guardiola's men, for a fee of 36.5 million euros ($41 million, £30.3 million) plus an extra six million euros in add-ons. 'This is a dream for me,' Cherki said in a City statement. 'To be joining a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special. 'I have worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep and his backroom staff. 'Everyone knows how good City are - they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace.' Cherki joins Rayan Ait-Nouri, who joined City from Wolves on Monday, as new signings for the Club World Cup, while a deal for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders is expected to be completed before Tuesday's deadline. City will face Moroccan side Wydad AC and Emirati club Al Ain before a clash of European heavyweights with Juventus in the group stage, which kicks off on June 14. They also spent more than £172 million in January on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez. A product of the Lyon youth academy, Cherki made his debut at 16 and became the club's youngest ever scorer in 2020. In total he scored 29 goals in 185 appearances for his boyhood club, including two in two games against City's rivals Manchester United in a remarkable Europa League quarter-final this season, won 7-6 on aggregate by the Red Devils. Cherki made his senior international debut last week, scoring and assisting in France's 5-4 Nations League semi-final defeat to Spain. 'There's no doubt that he's now in the best place possible to develop further under Pep's guidance and I really believe he can become a world-class player with our support and direction,' said City director of football Hugo Viana. kca/nf
