KUALA LUMPUR: Former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik got their Malaysia Masters campaign off to a composed start at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.
Fresh off their Thailand Open triumph, the world No. 3 overcame Taiwan's world No. 17 Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-18, 21-16 in a steady straight-games win to book their place in the second round.
Despite the smooth performance, Aaron admitted concerns over a short recovery period after back-to-back tournaments.
"We just finished a tournament last week, so we haven't had enough rest. But it's not really a problem," said Aaron.
"Our performance today was just okay. There's definitely room for improvement."
Next up for Aaron-Wooi Yik is another Taiwanese combination — world No. 21 Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han — whom they have never played before.
Wooi Yik acknowledged the challenge of taking on unfamiliar opponents.
"It's never easy when you haven't played a pair before," he said.
"Even in Thailand, we had to battle hard against a French pair we'd never faced. You can't afford to take anyone lightly these days."
"The level in men's doubles is incredibly high right now. Every pair brings something unique. There's no such thing as an easy match anymore."
Wooi Yik credited their coach Herry IP for keeping them on track.
"We prepare as best we can and trust the game plan. We're still learning from coach Herry, and that process is ongoing."
He added that they remain a work in progress.
"We know what we want to achieve on court, but we're still far from that level. It's a gradual journey."

Defending champion Sinner storms into Cincinnati semi-finals

DEFENDING champion Jannik Sinner swept past Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0 6-2 on Thursday to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-finals, with the world number one extending his hardcourt winning streak to 25 matches. Sinner delivered a dominant performance, capitalising on his opponent's 29 unforced errors to claim his first win in three meetings against the Canadian in just 71 minutes. "Today I felt great on court. I think you saw that but every day is going to be different," Sinner said. "Tomorrow is a day off, which is good for me. We will try and put some reps in and then see what I can do in the semis." The Italian became only the fifth man this century to record 25 consecutive victories on the surface alongside Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. He will face either Danish seventh seed Holger Rune or French qualifier Terence Atmane. In the women's draw, second seed Coco Gauff secured her place in the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win over Italy's Lucia Bronzetti. "For the most part I played aggressive. Maybe got a bit passive in some of those games. But it's tough. The balls are super light and they fly," Gauff said. "She wasn't giving me much pace. I was trying to play with control but also aggressive. I think I did well. I missed a couple balls. But I learned from it and was able to close it out." The two-time Grand Slam champion will next face another Italian, seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who swept past Barbora Krejcikova 6-1 6-2 in a rematch of the 2024 Wimbledon final.

Rugby-Argentina name side to take on All Blacks

FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Rugby World Cup 2023 - Semi Final - Argentina v New Zealand - Stade de France, Saint-Denis, France - October 20, 2023 Argentina's Juan Cruz Mallia in action REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo CORDOBA, Argentina, (Reuters) -Argentina have made sweeping changes to their team for Saturday's clash against New Zealand, strengthening their line-up for their opening clash of this year's Rugby Championship. Coach Felipe Contepomi, who rotated players in their last three tests against England and Uruguay in June and July, on Thursday picked a strong side to take on the All Blacks at the Estadio Mario Kempes, with the French-based quartet of Santiago Chocobares, Bautista Delguy, Marcos Kremer and Juan Cruz Mallia all returning after missing the mid-year matches. There are 10 changes from the Pumas' last international, a 52-17 win over neighbours Uruguay in Salta with only Rodrigo Isgro kept in the backline and four changes in the forward pack. Prop Francisco Gomez Kodela retired after the game while centre Matías Moroni has been dropped for the first time in more than three years. Injury rules out winger Emiliano Boffelli, flank Benjamín Grondona, who debuted in July, and front rower Thomas Gallo, who is scheduled to return next month. Last year, Argentina stunned the All Blacks with a 38-30 victory in Wellington in the opening round of the annual southern hemisphere championship but only 14 of 23 who played that day will line-up in Córdoba. Argentina also beat Australia and world champions South Africa at home in last year's competition to finish in third place. Team: 15-Juan Cruz Mallia, 14-Rodrigo Isgro, 13-Lucio Cinti, 12-Santiago Chocobares, 11-Bautista Delguy, 10-Tomas Albornoz, 9-Gonzalo Garcia, 8-Joaquin Oviedo, 7-Marcos Kremer, 6-Pablo Matera, 5-Pedro Rubiolo, 4-Franco Molina, 3-Pedro Delgado, 2-Julian Montoya (captain), 1-Mayco Vivas, Replacements: 16-Ignacio Ruiz, 17-Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, 18-Joel Sclavi, 19-Guido Petti, 20-Juan Martin Gonzalez, 21-Simon Benítez Cruz, 22-Santiago Carreras, 23-Justo Piccardo (Writing by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; editing by Pritha Sarkar)
