
Brazil's Azul to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection: report
Brazilian airline Azul is set to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States as soon as Tuesday (May 28, 2025), newspaper Valor Economico reported, citing sources.
The move would make the carrier the latest in a series of Latin American airlines to file for bankruptcy in the aftermath of the depression the industry suffered in the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Azul's move would follow in the footsteps of Aeromexico, Colombia-based Avianca and its two largest rivals, Gol and LATAM Airlines, all of which succumbed to bankruptcy proceedings in recent years.
Azul last year struck a deal with lessors to scrap $550 million in debt in exchange for an equity stake of around 20%, as well as one with bondholders to raise additional financing, but its balance sheet remained severely pressured.
Azul's net debt soared 50% year-on-year by the end of the first quarter to 31.35 billion reais ($5.56 billion), with its leverage ratio hitting 5.2, up from 3.7 a year earlier.

Most startups these days are exploiting employees by expecting them to work extra hours in light of the 'hustle culture' and still end up not receiving their salaries. Such startups need to have proper HR processes in place. The problem is much bigger than setting up a credit date.'Another comment read, 'If someone has worked for you through the month, regardless of performance or other factors, paying them is not a favour—it's your obligation. Whether someone chooses to stay or leave is their decision, but consistency and fairness in how we treat people shouldn't waver. Download ETHRWorld App Get Realtime updates Save your favourite articles Scan to download App A major UK initiative to match thousands of exploited migrant care workers with employers has helped less than 4% find jobs, according to a Freedom of Information request, casting doubt on the government's efforts curb the industry's reliance on new employees brought in from than 28,000 migrant care workers whose visas were tied to their employer had to be referred to government job-finding 'hubs' between May 2024 and April 2025, according data released by the Home Office in response to an FOI from charity the Work Rights Centre. That was after they lost the job they were supposed to fill when UK Visas and Immigration officers discovered more than 470 employers were exploiting staff and revoked their licenses to sponsor overseas just 941 of those so-called 'displaced' migrant staff signposted by UKVI for support, or 3.4%, reported finding alternative employment. The small proportion who've been helped calls into question the government's plan to bring down job vacancies in social care by utilizing the pool of displaced workers, after it banned recruitment of overseas social care staff last month in an effort to reduce immigration.'After Covid, England desperately needed more care workers, and thousands of people from around the world answered that call in good faith,' said Dora-Olivia Vicol, chief executive of the Work Rights Centre. 'But instead of jobs they got scams, and instead of justice they got a referral to a program that simply doesn't work as intended.'She urged the government to 'rethink their approach' to migrant care workers by fully reforming the Health and Care Worker Visa so it isn't dependent on employer Home Office has previously said 10,000 of the 40,000 who were displaced had found alternative work. A spokesman said the FOI figures 'do not provide a complete picture and workers were initially under no obligation to report their employment outcomes back to their regional partnership.''Over 900 workers have been directly matched into new employment thanks to the international recruitment fund and thousands more are being supported through our regional partnerships with CV writing, interview techniques and signposting,' the spokesman said. 'Since April employers wanting to recruit migrant care workers need to first consider recruiting from the pool of displaced workers - getting them back to work, into fulfilling careers and boosting productivity.'The Health and Care Worker Visa route was introduced by Boris Johnson's government in 2020, as the number of vacancies in the social care sector — which looks after the elderly, sick and disabled — soared due to Covid-19, Brexit and an aging population. Employers were given a fast-track route to recruit staff from abroad by applying for licenses from the Home Office to sponsor few checks were done on the businesses who became licensed to be sponsors. Many are thought to have gone into so-called 'black market' work such as prostitution in order to make a living, according to another government other cases, employers have rejected workers applying through the hubs because their English language isn't satisfactory, or they fail other requirements.'We're hearing a lot of moans about the hubs,' said Jane Townsend, chief executive of the Homecare Association which represents UK home care providers. Some businesses looking for workers said it had taken months to speak to anyone at the hubs, she said. 'What we're hearing from lots of people is that they're not replying to emails. There doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency — and of course the clock ticks for the displaced workers, they've got 60 days to find another job, otherwise they get deported.'

Amul debuts in Europe: How did it expand from a small co-operative to a global brand?

But now, the Gujarat-based cooperative is expanding to Europe. The brand announced a strategic partnership with Spain's Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches (COVAP) to introduce its flagship milk product in Spain and the European Union. The rollout will begin in Madrid and Barcelona, followed by cities including Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Cordoba and Lisbon in Portugal. From 1946 to 2025, Amul has had an exemplary journey of its own. The exploitative trade practices followed by the local trade cartel led to a rebellious cooperative movement where the farmers approached Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, seeking a solution. It was his advice that led to the formation of a co-operative as he suggested the farmers remove the middlemen, form their own co-operative and take the procurement, processing and marketing under their control. In 1946, the farmers went on a strike refusing to work under the cartel and under the inspiration of Sardar Patel, Morarji Desai and Tribhuvandas Patel formed a cooperative. Named Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd., the company began with just two village dairy co-operative societies and 247 litres of milk. Tribhuvandas Patel became the founder Chairman along with Dr Verghese Kurien, who was tasked with running the dairy from 1950. In post-independence India where there was a dire need for Milk, Amul came as a needed relief. Kurien led the 'Operation Flood' launched by the National Dairy Development Board which aimed to make India dairy independent. The program created a national milk grid which linked producers throughout the country, eliminating middlemen, reducing regional prices and ensuring that farmers got the majority of the price share. Tier 1 has village dairy cooperative societies set up in various localities. Every milk producer is a part of this community that elects representatives that manage District Milk Unions. Tier 2 has the District Milk Unions that manage the processing of milk and associated products and sell these to the State Milk Federation. The federation then sells these products in the market. Tier 3 has all these organizations that come under Amul (Anand Milk Union Limited) and the cooperative directly sells products to customers through the milk federation. The revenue is shared in a similar manner. In FY'22, Amul saw a group turnover of INR 61,000 Crores and achieved 18% growth in the previous year, further cementing it as one of the largest FMCG brands in India.
