Paddleboarder dies while rescuing 12-year-old girl in Utah reservoir
Daniel Braga Figueiredo, 31, borrowed a paddleboard and entered Silver Lake Flat Reservoir around 7 p.m. local time, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office. Figueiredo was related to the girl, a spokesperson for the office said in a news release.
When he reached her, people watched Figueiredo and the girl struggle to relocate her from the tube onto his paddleboard before the two fell into the reservoir. The sheriff's spokesperson said witnesses entered the water, too, at that point, in hopes of helping them.
Figueiredo was last seen lifting the girl out of the water and onto an inflatable device, the spokesperson said. He then disappeared beneath the surface.
Witnesses called 911 after the man vanished. Rescuers from several agencies subsequently responded to the scene and proceeded to search for Figueiredo, whose body was found and recovered from the reservoir at about 9:30 p.m., according to the sheriff's office.
"We would like to again offer our condolences to the family," the sheriff's spokesperson said in a statement.
Silver Lake Flat Reservoir is located in American Fork Canyon, inside the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest about 40 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. People who visit often participate in outdoor activities like kayaking, fishing, camping and hiking on surrounding trails, according to the U.S. Forest Service, which manages the reservoir.

In an updated statement obtained by WGAL-TV, the water park said the incident 'occurred at the wave pool within The Boardwalk." Motor rally accident kills three spectators in France
Three spectators died in central France on Saturday after a car driven by a 22-year-old woman racer veered off the road during an auto rally, authorities said. The driver of the modified Peugeot 208 that hit the spectators and her 51-year-old woman co-driver were taken to hospital but without life-threatening injuries, prosecutors said. Two men died at the scene and prosecutors later announced that a third man, airlifted to hospital, succumbed to his injuries. The three killed were two brothers, aged 70 and 60, and a 44-year-old man, according to the public prosecutor's office, which opened an investigation. Several people who witnessed the accident near the town of Ambert in central France were in shock, a local official told AFP. In total, a dozen people were taken to a psychological support unit set up in the nearby village of Saint-Just. The accident occurred around 11 am (0900 GMT) on Saturday. "This is a tragedy for the world of racing," said Joel Mathurin, the local prefect, or top government official for the area. Regional prosecutor Laure Moisset said the accident was "very violent". The husband of a social media influencer will not be charged in the May death of his 3-year-old son, prosecutors in Arizona said. Brady Kiser, husband of TikTok and Instagram influencer Emilie Kiser, will not be charged in the drowning death of their son, Trigg, because prosecutors were unlikely to get a conviction in the case, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a news release July 25. Trigg Kiser died on May 18 after being pulled from a backyard pool in Chandler, Arizona, six days earlier, police previously told USA TODAY. Court documents said Trigg's death was an accidental drowning in the family's pool. Police interviewed Brady Kiser Brady Kiser told police he was watching the couple's newborn son when Trigg fell into the pool on May 12, according to search warrant applications granted by Maricopa County Superior Court judges in May. Court records included a summarized police interview with Brady Kiser. Brady Kiser had told Chandler police he was home alone with the couple's two boys on May 12 while his wife was out with friends, the court records said. He told police he saw Trigg playing near the pool, which was "not uncommon," the court records said. He said the pool usually had a protective cover on it, they said. Brady Kiser said he was "soon distracted" by their newborn son, Theodore, when he lost sight of Trigg for three to five minutes, the records said. In the filing, attorneys said the family "desperately want to grieve in private, but sadly, the public will not let them," adding that her son's death "has become a media frenzy." That suit has prevented the release of a police report and some other records about the investigation. In the lawsuit, the Kisers' legal team argued dissemination of the information, which would normally be made available to the public, would violate her family's privacy. A judge ordered officials on June 3 not to disclose any records until lawyers reviewed and discussed their contents. The legal team later agreed that some records, such as redacted police and medical examiner reports, could be released.
