Scotland beat Netherlands to qualify for U19 Mens Cricket World Cup 2026

New Delhi [India], August 7 (ANI): The Scotland cricket team qualified for the International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 Men's World Cup 2026, defeating the Netherlands by 20 runs in the last Qualifier game, according to the ICC. Remaining unbeaten in the Europe Qualifiers, the hosts booked their tickets to Zimbabwe and Namibia for the main event early next year. Chasing 238 for a World Cup spot, Netherlands were well-placed at 108/3 despite losing two early wickets to Finlay Jones (4/41), who was the main architect of the Scotland win. Off-spinner Manu Saraswat (3/43) arrested the runflow of the visitors, and Ollie Jones removed the crucial wicket of Tom De Leede (67), who was threatening to run away with the match. Fittingly, Jones grabbed the final Dutch wicket as they were bowled out for 217, which enabled the qualification of Scotland. Speaking about the World Cup qualification, captain Thomas Knight expressed his relief and happiness after having edged past the Netherlands in a close encounter. 'Unbelievable! Could not be happier and especially doing it in that manner, winning a tight one there at the end. This whole week has been building upto the one game today, there has been a lot of learning we have taken from game one against Sweden all the way through to now," he said as quoted by ICC. Man of the moment Jones felt like it was a dream coming true to be a part of the World Cup.'When you start playing cricket, though you always dream of playing the World Cup, you never think that it is actually going to become a realisation. But now we have a World Cup in January, and it is something to look forward to. It has been a journey and it has all paid off," he said. Scotland remained unbeaten in the tournament and will head to the main event set to be held in January next year in Zimbabwe and Namibia. (ANI)

EXPOSED! Kerala government spent Rs 13 lakh to invite Lionel Messi, now he's not coming

(AP Photo/Gustavo Garello) The Kerala government spent Rs 13 lakh on Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman's trip to Spain in September 2024 to invite football legend Lionel Messi , contradicting earlier claims that no public money would be used. The minister, accompanied by the Sports Department Secretary and Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, had previously stated it would not cost "even a single rupee" to invite Messi. Minister Abdurahiman recently confirmed that the Argentine national team, led by Messi, would not be visiting Kerala . The team cited travel difficulties during October, the only month the sponsor was willing to host the event. The minister had earlier announced that the team would likely visit in October or November . He stated they would be treated as state guests, with the government covering security, accommodation, and logistics. Argentina's national team enjoys massive support in Kerala's Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. This support intensified after Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Abdurahiman, who hails from Malappuram, had been actively working to bring Messi to Kerala . Sources suggest political motivations behind these efforts , with local body elections scheduled for December and assembly elections for 140 members of the Kerala Legislative Assembly due in April-May next year. The revelation of the minister's Spain trip expenses has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Both the Congress-led UDF and BJP-led NDA have accused the Pinarayi Vijayan government of engaging in publicity stunts and misleading the public. Gary Kirsten can't keep calm, showers ex-student Gautam Gambhir with plaudits after India's win vs England in 5th Test

Former India head coach Gary Kirsten expressed his admiration for Gautam Gambhir's leadership following India's thrilling 2-2 series draw in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Gary Kirsten(PTI) Speaking to reporters after India's dramatic six-run win in the final Test at The Oval, Kirsten said he was "really pleased" with what Gambhir, his ex-student, and his team achieved under pressure. "I'm very excited that India won the series; I mean, levelled the series," said Kirsten, who guided India to their 2011 World Cup triumph with Gambhir as a key member of that squad. "It's great for Indian cricket, and I'm really pleased for Gautam Gambhir as well. He's well known, and I've worked with him a lot. I'm just pleased for what he's achieved with the team." The decider at The Oval went down to the wire on the final day. With England needing just 35 runs and India four wickets away from a series draw, fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna delivered under immense pressure. Siraj, who took five wickets in the innings, bowled Gus Atkinson with a searing yorker to seal the victory. The celebrations that followed were emotional and exuberant. Gambhir hugged his staff and players, including assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and bowling coach Morne Morkel, who lifted the Indian coach off his feet in a jubilant moment captured on the broadcast. The team then took a victory lap around The Oval, saluting Indian fans in the stands. Kirsten, now involved in youth development initiatives in South Africa, noted India's growing strength in developing talent and praised the country's sporting and educational culture. "I think India has a strong sports culture as well. Every country does it one way or another," Kirsten said. "My love for India is to see the development of young people in the holistic development of them. We know that education is really strong in India, and that's something that, as South Africans, we can learn from." Gambhir, who took charge as India's head coach last year, faced a challenging start to his tenure with tough series losses against New Zealand and Australia. But the spirited comeback in England, especially after going down 0-1 and later 1-2 in the series, has earned him both respect and breathing room in the role.
