Defence Minister Richard Marles insists he is confident the United States will keep supporting AUKUS, disclosing that the Trump administration told Australia weeks ago it was reviewing whether the $368 billion submarine deal should be changed or scrapped.
Revelations the United States will hold a 30-day probe into whether AUKUS puts 'America First' on Thursday have thrown into doubt the future of Australia's maritime defence and led the opposition to pressure the government to buttress the pact.
The Pentagon's move comes on top of US demands for Australia to boost defence spending, upping the stakes for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's expected meeting with US President Donald Trump in Canada next week, which has not been locked in just a day before he flies overseas.
But as former prime ministers and prominent AUKUS critics Paul Keating and Malcolm Turnbull said the US review gave the Albanese government cause to revisit the deal they argue puts Australia in hock to America, Labor won an ally in Scott Morrison.
Morrison, who signed the AUKUS pact as prime minister in 2021, said the US decision should not be overblown and branded critics 'delusional' in an ABC interview.

Coalition defence spokesman Angus Taylor said there was bipartisan support for AUKUS, but that the Albanese government had to say whether Australia's failure to pour more money into defence had provoked the US.
The US wants its allies, including Australia, to boost defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP. Labor plans to lift spending from 2 per cent to 2.3 per cent by the 2030s.

"The Rockliff minority government has made a mess of the Spirits project - but Labor is ready to clean it up," Labor leader Dean Winter said. Under the proposal, the project - which hosts Australia's biggest gas export plant - will be able to keep operating until 2070. The tentative approval has angered Indigenous groups fearful it will damage nearby ancient rock art, as well as environmentalists concerned it will hasten climate change. Protesters took the campaign to the offices of five federal Labor MPs in Perth on Friday where they handed over an open letter opposing the project signed by more than 60 scientists and experts. The North West Shelf's go-ahead is subject to strict conditions about the impact of air emission levels, provisions the environment minister says will ensure the 60,000-year-old Murujuga Indigenous rock art is not destroyed. Senator Watt said discussions with Woodside had been constructive and it was not uncommon for proponents in this situation to take a bit longer to respond. "I can't predict exactly when it will be that Woodside will provide those comments," he told ABC radio on Thursday. The energy giant confirmed the extended consultation period on Friday.
