Dapsy Sarawak calls for holistic selection to give more students access to matriculation
Peter Hee
MIRI (May 16): The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) to implement a more balanced and transparent policy to ensure fairer access to matriculation at Malaysian public universities.
Dapsy Sarawak leader Peter Hee urged the ministry to adopt a more inclusive and accountable approach to reflect the diverse realities faced by Malaysian students.
'We commend any initiative that acknowledges the struggles and achievements of students from underserved and rural communities. Many of these students have worked incredibly hard in challenging environments and deserve a fair chance at further education,' he said in a statement.
He was commenting on Senator C Sivaraj's proposal to recognise students with A- grades or 9A's in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) for matriculation entry.
Dapsy Sarawak proposed there should be contextual merit recognition, holistic selection, and transparency in policy implementation.
He explained that the holistic selection framework should incorporate a broader evaluation model that considers co-curricular involvement, socioeconomic background, and school infrastructure alongside academic performance.
'It should recognise students' academic achievements within the context of their environment, particularly those from rural or under-resourced schools,' he said.
Dapsy Sarawak, he said, fully supports transparency to ensure that any updated entry requirements are clearly communicated and consistently applied, to prevent confusion or perceived bias.
'We are ready to engage with the Ministry of Education, youth leaders, and student groups to help shape policies that uphold both fairness and excellence,' he added.
Sivaraj had called on MoE to revise its current policy which he said risked sidelining high-achieving non-Bumiputera SPM students as the automatic rejection of A- appeared to negate the value of the hard work of high-achieving students.
Under the current policy, only students who score a minimum of 10A+s or A's are eligible for automatic admission to the matriculation programme.
This excludes those who achieve 10A's as even one A-, or those with 9A's would not be considered 'excellent'. C. Sivaraj lead matriculation MOE Peter Hee

Anwar receives Aidiladha greetings from Iranian president, reaffirms support for Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR: In the spirit of Aidiladha, which upholds the values of sacrifice and justice, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the steadfastness of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in defending the plight of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. In a phone call with Masoud earlier Thursday (June 5), Anwar said Malaysia stands firmly with Iran in strongly rejecting all forms of occupation and the ongoing expulsion of Gaza's people, who continue to be oppressed by the Zionist Israeli regime. "I also conveyed that Malaysia's foreign policy is not dictated by external powers but is built on national interests and firm convictions. "Malaysia condemns the hypocrisy of certain countries that claim to uphold human rights yet silently allow mass killings without any dignified action. Silence in the face of oppression is a betrayal of universal human values," he said in a Facebook Thursday. Anwar said Masoud also extended Aidiladha greetings for the celebration on Saturday (June 7). Anwar prayed that haj pilgrims from both nations currently in the holy city of Makkah would be granted a blessed haj and contribute to the development of the "Ummah" upon returning to their respective countries. The prime minister also expressed gratitude to Masoud for his noble efforts in facilitating the repatriation of two Malaysian citizens previously detained in Iran. He said during the conversation, he conveyed appreciation to Masoud following the recent visits by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir to Tehran, as part of joint efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation. He noted that the cooperation spans education, technology, food security, trade, investment and the oil and gas sector. "In the same discussion, Malaysia welcomes the decision to resume Mahan Air flights from Tehran to Kuala Lumpur, which will undoubtedly open more opportunities and avenues for economic ties and people-to-people connections," he said. In a separate post, Anwar said he received a phone call from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan this afternoon, during which they discussed, among other things, the suffering of the Palestinian people. "We agreed that while the world chooses to remain silent and selective about the plight of Gaza's people, we cannot stand idly by. Malaysia wholeheartedly welcomes and fully supports President Erdogan's stance to utilise all available platforms and capabilities to defend the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people," he said. Anwar said they also discussed Erdogan's recent official visit to Malaysia, which he described as the most successful and meaningful in the nation's diplomatic history, further strengthening the long-standing bilateral ties. He said the visit was not merely a ceremonial exchange but was underpinned by substantive discussions addressing shared interests. "I view the visit as a manifestation of the alignment of values and the clear direction both nations share in upholding justice, sovereignty and the development of the global ummah," he said. Anwar said Malaysia is committed to working closely with Turkiye, particularly in forming a strategic partnership capable of amplifying the voice of the ummah on the global stage. "In the spirit of Aidiladha, embodying sacrifice, resilience and faith in divine guidance, Malaysia will continue to stand with Turkiye in fostering a more peaceful, just and humane world," he said, noting that he also received Aidiladha greetings from Erdogan. - Bernama

Malay Secretariat politically motivated, Bumiputra Economic Congress more effective, says Ahmad Maslan
SHAH ALAM: The formation of the Malay Secretariat Committee is politically motivated, in contrast to the Bumiputra Economic Congress (KEB), which actively advocates for Bumiputera rights, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. The Umno supreme council member said the Madani government-driven KEB has a focused and consistent plan to uplift the bumiputra community as a whole. "The rights of the Malays have been a long-standing focus for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), which consistently advocated for their interests, particularly in promoting the bumiputra community welfare each year. This commitment is reflected in various initiatives, such as the KEB, which the government is implementing to uplift the bumiputra community. "We have been undertaking such initiatives for generations. It doesn't make sense for them to think about doing the same thing as they did yesterday," he told reporters after attending the handing-over of letters of acceptance for projects aimed at addressing overcrowded schools in various states, here Thursday (June 5). Ahmad, who is also Deputy Works Minister, was commenting on the formation of the Malay Secretariat Committee, announced by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Wednesday (June 4). He said the committee does not require public support, as it is exclusively for Malays and that the KEB plays a more effective role in advancing the bumiputra community. - Bernama
