"Many many men have fallen into that cleavage and drowned"
She was the Corrie actress who mixed glamour with gritty realness.
Pat Phoenix was the first Queen of the Soaps and was known across Britain during her heyday playing the brash Elsie Tanner on Coronation Street.
She played street siren Elsie with aplomb from the show's inception until 1984. The character was known for her multiple affairs and fiery showdowns in the Rovers Return.

But as friends and colleagues have said, there was nobody quite like the woman who played her.
'Many many men have fallen into that cleavage and drowned. Believe me. I watched a few,' her co-star Julie Goodyear MBE said on the ITV show The Unforgettable Pat Phoenix.
'They drowned happily,' added Julie, following a short pause.
The documentary profiles the actress and reveals how her life offscreen was just as colourful as that of her onscreen counterpart.
As Coronation Street creator Tony Warren explained, Pat could be a formidable character.
'Everybody always waited to see what madam was wearing,' he told the programme.
'And if she had blue denim on she'd be a good sport, an old pro, comfortable, easy. Tailored - she'd be stark, professional.
"But woe betide you if she was in scarlet satin. And she was perfectly capable of being in scarlet satin at 9 o'clock in the morning if the mood took her.'
Known for her ever-changing outfits, Pat was a regular customer at Manchester dress agency The Elite.
Co-star Helen Worth, who played Gail Platt on Coronation Street for 50 years, said Pat was always impeccably dressed.
'You never saw her in the same clothes twice, ever,' she told documentary makers. 'Because she used to take one lot to The Elite and bring another lot out, wear that lot, take it back to The Elite and bring another lot out. So every day was a surprise.
'I mean she used to turn up sort of in costume every day.'
'Pat went into make up, made up,' added Julie Goodyear. 'And I used to say 'what time did you get up Pat?'.'
Describing Pat's 'grand house with a swimming pool', one friend told the programme the bathroom was entirely mirrored 'except for the floor which was white fur'.
Her close friend Diana Davies said Pat was a 'strange mixture' of glamour and normalcy.
'You'd go in and she'd say 'we're having fish and chips tonight kid but there's some champagne there if you want one,' she said. 'The mixture of champagne and fish and chips was Pat.'
Despite her glamorous image, Diana said Pat brought a gritty realness to the soap.
'She'd suddenly yank her bra strap up in the middle of a scene, or she'd have a little bit of a scratch and it was all very Northern, ordinary, real. And I don't think she even thought about doing things like that. I think she just did what came naturally.'
Though Pat became a star and Elsie became one of the most popular characters ever to grace the cobbles, it almost wasn't to be.
An experienced repertory theatre actress, Pat was 36 and had been out of work for a year when she auditioned for the part of Elsie. In her own words she said she went to the audition 'totally aggressive, ready to lose'.
But her performance bewitched Corrie creator Tony Warren, who said that as he fed her the lines it was 'like making love'. 'I had found my actress.'
As the wayward Elsie, Pat tackled some tough storylines. Her legendary character dealt with a turbulent love life which in some ways mirrored Pat's personal life.
And when actor Alan Browning appeared on the show to play Elsie's new lover Alan Howard, the two fell in love in real life.
'He was Richard Burton to her Elizabeth Taylor,' said Julie Goodyear.
The couple married and both quit television for the theatre. But Pat returned to the cobbles when they split up. Alan later died of liver failure.
In the years that followed Pat was said to have 'made herself a universal star in Greater Manchester.' She was a regular on television talk shows like Wogan and was in constant demand for personal appearances. She would regularly tell her life story to fans at bingo halls across the country.
'She loved going to bingo halls,' Tony Warren told the programme. 'She had a contract with a whole chain of them.
'And then she had one - a nice little earner on Saturday mornings - where she used to open butchers shops. If it was there she'd open it.'
In 1980 Pat met up with her old flame Tony Booth - the father of Tony Blair's wife, Cherie. Twenty-five years after their first relationship, the couple became an item again with Pat nursing Tony back to health after a near fatal accident.
After finding her soulmate, Pat announced she would be leaving Coronation Street for good and Elsie left the street in 1984, emigrating to Portugal.
Pat then starred in a sitcom, worked as a presenter on TVAM and performed on stage with her husband.
But in March 1986, she discovered she had cancer. It was a secret she kept from most people including Tony.
She was rushed to hospital in the summer of 1986 and made headlines when she married Tony on her deathbed.
'Was it one last headline? Was it a thumb in her nose? Who knows?' said Julie Goodyear in the documentary.
Her agent Sara Randall told the programme: 'I think she was married on her deathbed because she wanted to make sure Tony was alright but also it was the end of the Princess in the Tower dream.'
The couple were married just a few days before Pat passed away aged 62.
Her funeral was attended by Coronation Street stars as well as Tony's daughter, Cherie.
Pat has since been portrayed by a number of actresses, including Kym Marsh, Sue Johnston and Jessie Wallace, in various dramas and television programmes depicting her life.
But there can be only one original. As Helen Worth put it: 'She just adored Elsie Tanner. She was Elsie Tanner is the truth, I think really.'

EastEnders fans concerned BBC soap star has 'quit' after 6 years as character
Over the last few weeks, there have been recent EastEnders exits confirmed including Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier). Among them is also Bernadette 'Bernie' Taylor (Clair Norris) who will also be leaving Albert Square after eight years. But now some fans are concerned another has quietly 'quit', after first joining the BBC soap six years ago. In 2019, Lexi Pearce, who is the daughter of the late Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) returned to EastEnders and has since been played by Isabella Brown. The young actress took over from Dotti-Beau Cotterill, who played the character between 2012 and 2015. However, viewers have recently noticed Lexi's absence in recent months, with some saying they haven't seen her since EastEnders' 40th anniversary earlier in the year and fear she has 'left' the programme. It comes as someone wrote on Reddit: 'Anyone know what's happening with Lexi? She hasn't been seen since the 40th anniversairy and was rather absent prior to that too. 'Lexi is 13 next month. The same age as Lily was when she gave birth.' They added: 'With only 9 appearances this year I wouldn't be shocked to see her return with a new head.' One person replied: 'She was last seen on March after Phil's special episode if I remember correctly. I assume we'll be seeing more of her later in the year. Her and Lola's birthdays are coming up in July so it'd be nice if the show adressed it.' Another commented that they hope EastEnders has 'something planned for later in the year' as 'it's a shame she was absent for Phil's recent storyline'. Meanwhile, others have said they think Lexi could be 'recast', according to the post on the subreddit r/eastenders. As this profile wrote: 'Looks wise the actress reminds me a lot of the old Amy Mitchell so I wonder if they'll recast her soon to someone more older/ older looking.' A second Reddit account put: 'I hope she doesn't get recast. She's a great actress and it's nice to see a realistic looking teenager. Most of the teens are played by adults and even the likes of Lily who is only 16 irl I feel always looked a bit older (which obviously isn't her fault, some teens do look older which is realistic but not literally all of them.)' But a few fans joined in to say: 'Not every character has to be on screen all the time. It's one of the perks of having an ensemble cast.' Blink and you'll miss it! #EastEnders, 7:30pm, Monday 16th June on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer. — BBC EastEnders (@bbceastenders) June 14, 2025 In agreement, a user added: 'The other child actors and actresses have big breaks too. Lily just left for a while Hope and Arthur have spent time of screen as have Kat and Alfies two twins spend time off Screen Ricky has loads of time off screen.' However, back in December last year, Isabella's agent (EJC Management) confirmed that she would continue to play Lexi "throughout 2025". An Instagram post previously said: "So very proud of this young lady! "Our incredible ISABELLA BROWN will continue to play the brilliant Lexi Pearce throughout 2025 in @bbceastenders. EastEnders confirm BBC schedule change next week as something 'big' is coming
Following Chris Clenshaw's final episodes of EastEnders as executive producer, the BBC soap has confirmed a change to its usual schedule at the start of next week. Former commissioning executive at Channel 4, Ben Wadey, who has also previously worked as a story editor on EastEnders, is now taking over the reins of Albert Square. But as his stint as the new executive producer of Walford begins, it's been revealed there will be no usual BBC iPlayer episode dropping at 6am on Monday (June 16). In a statement, Ben has hinted that something 'big' is on the way, as EastEnders has shared that Monday's episode will air on BBC One and iPlayer at the same time (7.30pm). He teased: 'Next week marks the start of something big in Walford that we hope will get everyone talking, and it's only just the beginning.' Ben also revealed what to expect in Walford over the next few months and why fans 'don't want to miss' this summer. He added: 'We've got twists, shocks, and plenty of drama lined up for a summer you don't want to miss.' However, the change to the BBC iPlayer schedule has left some fans speculating that an EastEnders legend is about to return after four years. 📣Schedule Alert! #EastEnders, Monday 16th June, 7:30pm on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer. Trust us, you won't want to miss it! (There will be no 6am iPlayer drop.) — BBC EastEnders (@bbceastenders) June 13, 2025 It comes as @bbceastenders wrote on X: 'Schedule Alert! #EastEnders, Monday 16th June, 7:30pm on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer. Trust us, you won't want to miss it! (There will be no 6am iPlayer drop).' In response, someone said: 'It's Max Branning and Oscar returning this Monday 16th June 2025 at Number 14 Albert Square spoiler reveal.' Another commented: 'Please tell me Max is back!! This viewer asked: 'Max??' Last month, reports by The Sun suggested Max, played by Jake Wood, was set to return to Walford. As a TV source previously said: 'Jake's return is huge news for EastEnders fans as his character made a massive mark on the show. 'It'll raise some eyebrows after he was absent from the 40th anniversary earlier this year. 'Bosses are excited about what his character's reappearance means for spicing up the plots. 'There is plenty to go at. Max has loads of unfinished business in the Square and is set to ruffle some feathers.' EastEnders declined to comment in May. 'Lovely' pub that's opened in former home of Coronation Street's Rovers Return
A new pub opened in Manchester this month and it used to be home to the Rovers Return pub on the Coronation Street set. The Stables Tavern, which was also once a stable, is a pub 'built for locals' as well as anyone who is seeking 'the simple joy of a good drink in good company.' From beers to cocktails and even a snack menu, this new Manchester pub has plenty to offer. The pub owners explain on its website that it's 'a historic tavern reimagined in the heart of Manchester centre, where everyone is welcomed like a regular, whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth.' The Stables Tavern on Grape Street is steeped in history: 'On the corner of Bonded Warehouse sits the Tavern that fed Manchester's Industrial Revolution. 'Nestled in the heart of St John's stands the Stable's Tavern, the heart of the St John's industrial age and the watering hole for workers, merchants and radicals alike.' The Manc shared the pub's connection to the iconic ITV soap and what visitors can expect: 'Inside, punters will find multiple beer taps with local beers, served with complimentary bowls of crisps as well as a menu of pub snacks like handmade sausage rolls and local pies.' With an outdoor terrace and a parlour area plus a bar, the pub has lots of space for customers to enjoy sipping their pints. Despite only opening on Friday, June 6, the pub has already received some praise from customers on Google Reviews. One customer said: 'What an amazing venue!! Thought it looked great on social media but I was blown away when we visited. Staff were brilliant and really friendly and we even got a free pint each!
