Gladiator Metals says it's open to feedback on drilling program inside Whitehorse city limits
The company's president, Marcus Harden, addressed city council Monday. He said Gladiator recognizes it has "a lot more work to do" on community engagement.
Eight delegates appeared before council last month to speak against the project. They cited concerns about the environmental impact of mining and the potential impact of drilling on domestic well water sources. They also accused Gladiator of one-sided engagement that didn't leave space for residents to give feedback.
Gladiator resumed drilling in the Whitehorse copper belt in 2024. An application to expand exploration to a class 3 permit is going through the assessment process. If approved, Gladiator would expand drilling throughout the whole 35-kilometre Copper Belt project, most of which is within city limits.
Harden told council that Gladiator is in regular discussion with First Nations governments and holds open houses for the community every few months
"We're always grateful for any advice or suggestions on how our engagement can be improved," Harden said.
He said they're trying to keep an "open door policy" in response to community concerns, but did not elaborate on what concerns the company has heard. Gladiator is also trying to keep disturbances to a minimum for nearby residents, he said.
"We take all concerns raised seriously and have followed up with relevant government departments and regulatory bodies to ensure we understand and mitigate these concerns where possible," he said.

Air Canada responded by issuing a 72-hour lockout notice. Article content Article content 'For the past nine months, we have put forward solid, data-driven proposals on wages and unpaid work, all rooted in fairness and industry standards,' said Wesley Lesosky, President of the Air Canada Component of CUPE. 'Air Canada's response to our proposals makes one thing clear: they are not interested in resolving these critical issues.' Article content The airline is also refusing to increase flight attendant wages to match industry standards, inflation, or even federal minimum wage. Entry-level flight attendant wages have only gone up $3 per hour since 2000 while inflation has increased by 69% in the same timeframe. Article content 'Our locals have had to set up food banks in our union offices for junior members who cannot afford groceries,' said Lesosky. 'Our members need and deserve a fair wage increase that makes everyone whole for the skyrocketing cost of living, and one that lifts our junior flight attendants out of poverty.' Article content Air Canada's offer of an 8% wage increase in year one would not even recoup the 9% that flight attendants have lost in purchasing power over the course of their previous contract. 'When we stood together, Air Canada didn't come to the table in good faith,' Lesosky added. 'Instead, they called on the federal government to step in and take our rights away. Air Canada to begin cancelling flights, issuing refunds ahead of possible strike
Air Canada says it will begin cancelling flights on Thursday ahead of a potential strike in which more than 10,000 flight attendants could walk off the job this weekend. The country's largest airline said the gradual suspension of flights would allow for an orderly shutdown. About 130,000 customers a day could be affected by a disruption, according to Air Canada.
