ESPN Projects the No. 1 College Football Program for Next Two Seasons
ESPN Projects the No. 1 College Football Program for Next Two Seasons originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One college football program stands above the rest in ESPN's new projections through the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Advertisement Factors like returning quarterback, likelihood of a multiyear starting quarterback, offensive line/defensive line outlook, roster management, star power and coaching staff were used by ESPN's Adam Rittenberg to rank programs throughout the Power Four along with independent Notre Dame. Perennial powers, of course, make up the top 10, featuring the Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 10), Tennessee Volunteers (No. 9), LSU Tigers (No. 8), Clemson Tigers (No. 7), Penn State Nittany Lions (No. 6) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (No. 5). The Oregon Ducks kick off the top four after securing the Big Ten Championship and a College Football Playoff appearance under young head coach Dan Lanning. Oregon is the only team to land both a top-four high school and transfer portal class in the 2025 cycle. Sitting third is the defending SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs and acclaimed head coach Kirby Smart, who led his alma mater to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. Advertisement While Georgia hasn't logged a playoff win since that run in 2022, Smart and Co. have yet to finish outside the top five in recruiting in nine consecutive years. The top two came down to the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes and rising SEC powerhouse Texas Longhorns. Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day and Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian shake hands prior to the College Football Playoff Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Head coach Ryan Day's Buckeyes secured their ninth national championship and the first under Day after bouncing back from two regular-season losses in 2024. There's a lot to like about the historic program moving forward, but the Longhorns got ESPN's nod at No. 1. The outlook for Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian begins with star quarterback Arch Manning, a former five-star recruit who is entering his first season as a full-time starter. Advertisement Manning, although eligible for the 2026 NFL draft, could benefit from a return to the Longhorns for the 2026 season. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning (16).Jerome Miron-Imagn Images "But Manning is in a unique situation because of his background and the money he has already earned in college," Rittenberg wrote. "He doesn't need to rush off to begin his pro career and could benefit from a second season as the starter under coach Steve Sarkisian." Sarkisian has led Texas to back-to-back playoff appearances after rebuilding a roster that totaled 13 wins over his first two seasons at the helm. "Sarkisian got the Texas job largely because of his reputation with playcalling and quarterbacks, but his greatest gains have come up front, especially elevating an underperforming offensive line," Rittenberg wrote. Advertisement Recruiting, particularly along the lines of scrimmage, has seen a noticeable uptick of late. And Texas is coming off the nation's top class in the 2025 cycle. Texas Longhorns linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. (0).Tim Heitman-Imagn Images As far as star power, Manning is an obvious mention. Elsewhere, the defense returns All-Americans in EDGE Colin Simmons and linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. alongside safety Michael Taaffe. Offensively, wide receiver Ryan Wingo will be relied upon heavily. Maintaining elite talent is certainly a barometer of success for future seasons, as is Sarkisian's job security and a well-built staff. "He's (Sarkisian) at an A-list job and likely isn't going anywhere, and he has done a good job establishing and maintaining a veteran staff that includes coordinators Kyle Flood (offense), Pete Kwiatkowski (defense) and Jeff Banks (special teams)." Advertisement Texas will open the 2025 season with no small task, a playoff rematch against Ohio State on the road. That highly-anticipated matchup will take place on Aug. 30 at noon ET on Fox. Projected Michigan Commit Makes Bold National Championship Claim About Texas
Projected Michigan Commit Makes Bold National Championship Claim About Texas originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Class of 2026 four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee, one of the top players in the country, remains uncommitted as he considers some of the top college football programs in the country. Advertisement Lee (6-foot-7, 310 pounds) plays for Kamehameha Secondary High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. He ranks as the No. 9 offensive tackle, the No. 1 player in the state of Hawaii and the No. 85 recruit overall in his class, per On3. Lee is projected to land at Michigan, according to 247Sports' Steve Lorenz. Head coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines extended a scholarship offer to Lee in the summer of last year before making his top-four schools, also including Georgia, Texas and Alabama. Georgia (April 10) and Alabama (May 30) officially hosted Lee before Texas got its opportunity over the weekend. Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian speaks with quarterback Arch Manning (16)© Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images And head coach Steve Sarkisian's Longhorns must have made a significant impression, as Lee spoke highly of the trajectory of the SEC powerhouse. Advertisement Although Texas hasn't won a national championship since 2005 and hasn't played for one since 2009, Lee believes the Longhorns will reach the promised land soon. "They will be National Champions very soon," Lee said via Steve Wiltfong after his visit. Lee's bold claim follows two standout seasons by Texas, including back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances. The Longhorns fell one game shy of a national championship shot in a loss to Ohio State in the semifinals last season. There is also some notable momentum on the recruiting trail, as Texas signed the nation's No. 1 class in the 2025 cycle and are pushing for another top class in 2026. Advertisement Lee, coming off his visit to the Longhorns, is slated to officially visit Michigan on June 20 and plans to announce his decision on Aug. 15. Charles Barkley Drops Retirement Plans After Final 'Inside the NBA' TNT Episode
Charles Barkley Drops Retirement Plans After Final 'Inside the NBA' TNT Episode originally appeared on Athlon Sports. "Inside the NBA" has been a staple for basketball fans for the past 36 years, and on Saturday night, TNT aired its final episode. Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny Smith, Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, and the rest of the crew aren't going away, though, with the show moving to ESPN starting next season. Advertisement It was a bittersweet moment for everyone at TNT. But despite the move, the crew will continue working with TNT and ESPN simultaneously. Barkley was a guest on the "Dan Patrick Show," and said, "If they're being honest, we're gonna probably work on ESPN one-third or half the time." Barkley has been outspoken about his concerns with the move because of his schedule. He has made it clear he doesn't want to take on more work as he is set to move between the two networks. "If they start trying to work me too much between ESPN and TNT, I'm just gonna walk on home," Barkley added. Advertisement Barkley went on to discuss his retirement plans, saying he has seven years left on his TNT deal, but he's only got two more years in him. "I actually have seven years left on my contract," Barkley stated. "I'm like, yeah, there's no way I'm working seven years. I said, I'm gonna be a good soldier for Kenny, Ernie, and Shaq, and the people I work with. Because I love the people I work with, especially behind the scenes. "I said, but the best I can do is two years. And them other five years, they got no chance of happening. So I said, you know what, I'll give y'all two years. They're like, can we get three? I said, I just told you, I ain't gonna give you two." 11-time NBA All-Star and "Inside the NBA" host Charles Terada-Imagn Images The 16-year NBA legend also spoke about what he's going to be doing at TNT now that the show is moving to ESPN. He said he and the rest of his crew filmed a "pilot" a month ago for TNT and called it the "stupidest (expletive) I've ever seen." Advertisement "TNT is trying to do something stupid behind the scenes," Barkley added. "We taped a pilot about a month ago. And it was the stupidest (expletive) I've ever seen in my life... Barkley said TNT wants to have a show with no "basketball highlights." "Number one, we won't have basketball highlights," Barkley said. "But also, we're probably going to be going up against the NBA game. And anybody who likes basketball ain't going to say, hey, you know what, let me turn off an NBA game that's on Amazon, ESPN, or NBC to go watch these four dudes sit around and talk about nothing."
