Govt ropes in AI firm to speed up I4C's cybercrime response
The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) is preparing to deploy an artificial intelligence system that will automatically classify complaints and detect emerging fraud patterns across the country's cybercrime reporting platform.
The AI model, developed by firm S4AI, will be integrated into the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal following further formalities, officials said.
The system addresses a critical challenge faced by victims filing complaints on the portal. 'When a complainant is under pressure to report on the NCRP, they often don't even know what kind of crime has happened,' said Nisarg Gandhi, co-founder of S4AI. 'They might file a complaint in their local language, sometimes they only have a call recording, or maybe just some evidence files.'
S4AI's model can process audio complaints in 22 languages, scanned FIR copies and text descriptions to automatically identify crime types and methods of operation. The system was trained using real-life data from the NCRP.
The technology emerged as the winner of an AI hackathon organised October 2024 by the Union IT ministry's India AI Mission and I4C, chosen from 20 shortlisted teams to claim a ₹25 lakh prize.
'We are facing numerous challenges in cybercrime. The volume, veracity and complexity of the problems that are posed to us can be addressed very successfully with AI models,' said Rajesh Kumar, CEO of I4C. The portal currently receives approximately 6,000 cases daily.
The need for such technological intervention is stark. According to the National Statistical Office's 'Comprehensive Modular Survey: Telecom, 2025' released on May 29, only 12.6% of rural residents aged 15 and above know how to report cybercrime or fraud, compared to 27.8% in urban areas.
Experts hope the AI system will not only improve efficiency but also bridge this awareness gap by simplifying the reporting process.
A key feature of the model is its ability to flag emerging cybercrime patterns in real time. When similar complaints spike within a single day, the system alerts law enforcement agencies about potential new fraud methods, enabling investigators to respond quickly before scams spread.
Once deployed, Gandhi said the model will operate entirely within the NCRP's infrastructure. S4AI will lose access to the system post-deployment, ensuring data security and control remain solely with the government.

Chhattisgarh biggest laggard in mobile ownership by women: NSO data
Chhattisgarh (39 per cent), Tripura (40.4 per cent) and Madhya Pradesh (42.4 per cent) have emerged as laggards in terms of mobile phones owned by women, according to the latest 'Comprehensive Modular Survey: Telecom' (CMS:T) released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Thursday. Data showed that mobile phone ownership among women in the '15 years and above' age group in 10 states and Union Territories (UTs) stood below the national average of 56.2 per cent. Meanwhile, nearly 92 per cent women in Goa and Ladakh owned a mobile phone, followed by Mizoram (88.5 per cent), Kerala (85 per cent) and Puducherry (83 per cent). The NSO survey defines mobile phone ownership as having a device with an active SIM card for personal use, including employer-provided phones and those not registered in the user's name. While determining ownership, joint ownership of a single mobile phone is not considered. So, ownership is determined based on majority use. Data further showed that in urban areas — nearly 72 per cent women owned mobile phones, while only 48 per cent owned one in rural areas. The corresponding figure for males stood at 90 per cent and 80.7 per cent, respectively. Among women who owned a mobile phone, 78.4 per cent had a smartphone at the national level with 91.1 per cent women in Delhi having a smartphone. This was followed by Goa (89.9 per cent), Mizoram (89 per cent), Manipur and Meghalaya (88 per cent). Smartphone ownership was lowest among women in Puducherry (62.8 per cent), followed by Tamil Nadu (70.8 per cent), Telangana (71.9 per cent), West Bengal (73.2 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (74.4 per cent). In rural areas, smartphone ownership among those who had a mobile phone stood at 79.2 per cent for males and 75.6 per cent for females. In urban areas, the percentage was estimated at around 89.4 per cent and 86.2 per cent for males and females, respectively. In terms of mobile phone usage, nearly four of five women (79.8 per cent) reported using mobile phones during the last three months preceding the survey.

11-year-old Dalit rape victim dies of injuries in Patna
A minor Dalit girl who was raped and found with nearly 20 knife wounds in Muzaffarpur died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday (June 1, 2025). The brutal assault took place on May 26, the police said. The 11-year-old was transferred to Patna on Saturday for better medical treatment, but was allegedly left in pain inside the ambulance outside the Patna hospital for about five hours, and was admitted after intervention by Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar. The police said the girl was found with nearly 20 knife injuries on and around her neck in a pit at a brick kiln. A first information report (FIR) was lodged against a 30-year-old man on the complaint of the girl's uncle and the accused was arrested in the same evening. The injured girl was initially treated at the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur and underwent surgery that lasted hours, but doctors had said she remained critical. The girl was under the care of her mother and cousin after the death of her father. Animesh Chandra Gyani, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, West -2, Muzaffarpur, told The Hindu, 'Doctor has confirmed rape.' Following the death of the girl, Congress workers in Muzaffarpur blocked the road while raising slogans against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Health Minister Mangal Pandey. Mr. Rajesh Kumar blamed the State government for her death and alleged she died due to lack of proper and timely treatment. Congress workers also burnt the effigies of the Chief Minister and the Health Minister in Patna. 'The irresponsible Janata Dal (United)-Bharatiya Janata Party government pushed the minor Dalit rape victim to death with their mismanagement. The incident happened on May 26, and while the Congress party has been raising the issue continuously, neither the Muzaffarpur District Magistrate or Patna AIIMS hospital and PMCH paid heed to it,' Mr. Rajesh Kumar said. He further said, 'We had appealed to the Muzaffarpur DM and submitted a memorandum to refer the girl to a bigger healthcare centre for treatment. We had also appealed for airlifting the girl to Delhi AIIMS, but the JD(U)-BJP government did not listen.' Mr. Rajesh Kumar added, 'Yesterday [Saturday], when the girl was brought to Patna after her health deteriorated, she was first not admitted to AIIMS Patna citing lack of specialist doctors. Then she was brought to PMCH, where she was not admitted and the victim kept in the ambulance for five hours. After my intervention and repeated efforts, she was admitted to the PMCH, but by then her condition had become very critical.' Congress Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan too slammed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government over the issue, saying, 'Bihar, which was known as the land of knowledge, sacrifice and penance, has transitioned to a goon-mafia rule of murder, rape and kidnapping by criminals and anarchist elements under the patronage of JD-(U) and BJP government.'

Noida cops traced 53cr lost to cyber frauds in 17 mths
Noida: Police recovered Rs 53 crore stolen through digital fraud over the past 17 months, according to official data released Saturday. The operation, which began in Jan 2024, has also resulted in the arrest of 553 fraudsters, primarily from Delhi and UP. DCP (cyber) Preeti Yadav said cops have been consistently recovering over Rs 3 crore monthly, working in close coordination with bank officials and other stakeholders. Of the total amount recovered, Rs 25 crore was retrieved through complaints filed on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, while Rs 27.9 crore was recovered through formal FIRs. "Time is crucial in cyber fraud cases," emphasized DCP Yadav. "Complaints filed within the first hour have a 50% recovery rate, with most early reporters successfully receiving their money back." The most prevalent cyber scams in the Noida and Greater Noida regions include fake digital arrests, fraudulent investment schemes, KYC update scams, and electricity bill discount frauds. As part of preventive measures, authorities blocked over 10,000 suspicious mobile numbers, many of which were registered using stolen identities. To aid victims of low-value frauds, police launched a unique initiative in collaboration with the District Advocates Association. Under this campaign, 27 advocates will offer legal support to victims who lost less than Rs10,000. Lists of these advocates, along with their contact details, have been posted in all district police stations.
