Liquor scam: No SC relief for Rajampet MP Midhun Reddy

on Friday dismissed the anticipatory bail petition filed by Rajampet MP P Midhun Reddy in the alleged liquor scam case. The SIT probing the case named Midhun as an accused (A-4) and termed him the mastermind behind the scam.
Andhra Pradesh high court earlier dismissed his anticipatory bail petition, noting that it is necessary to give a free hand to the investigating officer as the prosecution had made a prima facie case against the YSRCP leader.
Challenging the HC order, Midhun moved the apex court seeking relief from arrest. Arguing on his behalf, senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the case was foisted for political reasons. He said the SIT called the YSRCP MP for inquiry only once and no new material was produced by the investigating agency against him.
The SIT is already in the process of filing a charge sheet in the case, and no custodial interrogation is necessary as the petitioner is willing to cooperate with the investigation.
The SC bench, comprising of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, asked how the investigation agency can file a charge sheet without arresting the accused. As the bench was not inclined to grant any relief, Singhvi sought one week's time to surrender.

Following the dismissal of Midhun's anticipatory bail application, the SIT filed a memo for a warrant before the trial court to arrest him. The SIT has been arguing that Midhun played a key role in changing the excise policy and altering the order-placing mechanism from automatic to manual system. It was also alleged that he was the mastermind in collecting commissions from suppliers and transferring money to different entities.

Ghaziabad: Harshvardhan Jain, a fake diplomat arrested on Wednesday for running a fake embassy out of a plush, two-storey bungalow in Kavi Nagar, is a wealthy businessman's son who studied abroad. Jain completed his BBA from a private college in Ghaziabad before heading to London for an MBA. "His father JD Jain is an industrialist. Man locks home & leaves as dad's body taken home
1 2 3 Thrissur: In a disturbing incident, the son locked the house and went away when his father's body was brought from an old age home to his house at Arimboor on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday. The deceased, Thomas Plakkan (80) and his wife Rosly (77), were shifted to separate old age homes in Nov last year following alleged torture by their son Jaison and daughter-in law Rincy. The couple had lodged a complaint with the Anthikkad police. Social justice department officials shifted Thomas to San Jose Care Home, Manaloor, and Rosly to Kripa Sadan at Karamukku by after local residents alerted them. "Someone had sent us a clandestinely recorded video of the abuse of the couple earlier. We went to the house along with the panchayat officials. The couple told us that they could not stay at the house anymore because of the torture. 1 out of 9 school vans/buses found violating safety norms
1 2 3 Lucknow: Around 4,089 out of 46,748 (one out of nine) school vehicles, including buses and vans, that were inspected as part of the transport department's campaign were found violating safety standards. The drive, a part of initiative to ensure students' safety launched by Yogi Adityanath govt, was carried out between July 1 and July 15. While a total of 67,613 school vehicles are registered in the state, of those inspected, at least 1,768 vehicles had their fitness expired. The drive also saw the department issuing challan to 4,438 vehicles, seizing of 913 vehicles and collection of Rs 88.5 lakh as fine from violators. "Negligence or ignorance of rules in operating school vehicles will not be tolerated. There will be no compromise on the safety of children. All concerned officials, school management, and vehicle operators should take immediate action on this. Strict legal action will be taken against those who violate the rules," said transport commissioner, UP, Brajesh Narayan Singh. Operation of school vehicles must be completely controlled under the strict and clear provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) 1989, and especially the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules (Twenty-sixth Amendment), 2019.
