Steelers DT Cam Heyward called out by Raiders center: 'He didn't beat me, I beat myself'
Steelers DT Cameron Heyward was just called out by Raiders IOL Jackson Powers-Johnson.
Appearing on Raiders star DE Maxx Crosby's podcast, Powers-Johnson was asked to share what his "welcome to the NFL moment" was in 2024 — and he described it as playing against Heyward, while also calling out the Steelers veteran for a rematch soon:
"You gotta say playing against Cam Heyward and giving up my first sack — ever, in my entire life. He didn't beat me, I beat myself," Powers-Johnson said with a grimace. "I beat myself. I overset. I overset and he got me. And [Heyward] said some choice words after, and I really hope he comes back for another year. That's all I'm going to say."
Barring a playoff meeting, Heyward won't face off against Powers-Johnson in 2025 — which may be in the second-year Raider's best interests, as he may have bitten off more than he can chew with the Steelers vet.

Steelers Add Another Memphis Alum, Sign Ballhawking Safety

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to signed safety Quindell Johnson, per his agency, Universal Sports Management. Johnson is a 6-foot, 208-pound safety out of Memphis in his third professional season. He was most recently with the San Francisco 49ers, but was waived on May 13. Advertisement The 25-year-old former undrafted free agent first joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, but was released during final roster cuts. He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears and played nine games during his rookie season in Chicago. He played 35 snaps of defense, playing both in the box and as a free safety. He also played 106 snaps of defense. In total, Johnson recorded three tackles and intercepted Blaine Gabbert in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Last summer, Johnson was again waived coming out of training camp. He spent the entire 2024 season on the Los Angeles Rams practice squad, but did not appear in a game. He was released by the Rams on Jan. 7 and signed with the 49ers on Jan. 21 before being cut after the draft. Quindell Johnson, Memphis Athletics A New Orleans native, Johnson joined Memphis in 2018 and spent five seasons with the Tigers. He redshirted as a true freshman and started four games in 2019 before becoming a three-year starter. Advertisement In 2021, Johnson had 105 tackles, and he followed that up with an AAC-leading four interceptions in 2022. He was a three-time All-AAC selection. In pre-draft testing, Johnson ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, and posted a 4.24-second shuttle run, but had a below-average 32.5-inch vertical for an overall Relative Athletic Score of 7.24. His signing continues the Steelers strong trend of signing players with Memphis area connections lately. He joins Calvin Austin III, Kenneth Gainwell and Roc Taylor as Memphis alumni. Cornerback Brandin Echols is also a Memphis native. The Steelers do not currently have an open roster spot, though they will be able to place tight end Donald Parham on injured reserve after his season-ending injury on Tuesday. Is Myles Garrett's absence from Browns OTAs meaningless or a problem?

We have hit the portion of the NFL offseason that can often lead to frustration for fans and media: Voluntary OTAs. The Cleveland Browns started their first OTA session on Tuesday following Memorial Day. In between voluntary activities is a mandatory minicamp where players are subject to fines if they decide to skip. Currently, the Browns do not seem to have any player with a contract dispute (unlike down in Cincinnati and other places) so, barring excused absences, the whole team should be in attendance starting on June 10th. Advertisement The most notable absence from the first session of voluntary (there is that word again) OTA is DE Myles Garrett. Fresh off an offseason where he demanded a trade before signing a huge contract extension, Cleveland's star defender is taking in the sights and, seemingly, house hunting in Japan (via his Instagram Story): In general, fans expect players to give their all to the sport and their team. Given Garrett's huge new contract, those expectations are even greater. All in all, Garrett's absence is mostly meaningless. Early offseason activities are focused on simple installs of formations and teaching techniques. Garrett, and other veterans not in attendance, have little need for those things, which allows coaches to spend more time with the new and younger players. Advertisement Where attendance can be helpful is for positions that require as much timing work as possible. Quarterbacks and receivers can use the repetitions to get a better connection, as can offensive linemen in learning to work together. While it can be helpful, teams can be very successful without having everyone in attendance at voluntary activities. If Cleveland struggles in 2025, it will have nothing to do with Garrett being in Japan. Are the optics potentially problematic given his offseason complaints? Sure, but all that matters are things that directly impact performance on the field. Missing voluntary activities are unlikely to do so. Fans will always want more from the highest-paid players on a team and, especially, after Garrett's offseason trade request. Could it help his leadership role, his teammates' buy-in and fans' opinions if he were at every activity? Most certainly. Will it have any kind of significant impact on the results of the 2025 season? Unlikely. Unfortunately, there is no way to prove one way or the other. We know our DBN community is passionate and smart about football, do you think Garrett's absence is meaningless or a significant concern for the Browns this year?
