Brian Esquibel, architect of Letran's 2009 title, brings Knights back to finals

In 2009, Brian Esquibel built a dynasty when he guided Colegio de San Juan de Letran to its third straight NCAA men's volleyball title.
Now, he has rekindled that winning fire, steering the new generation of Knights back to the finals after a lengthy 16-year absence.
Letran did it the hard way. The Knights overcame an up-and-down Season 100 campaign that eventually led to a Final Four ticket as they finished at the fourth spot. They also had to face top-seeded De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the Final Four with the Blazers armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.
The Knights, though, refused to back down as they stormed from that disadvantage and stunned the Blazers in back-to-back games to advance to the finals.
"Actually, isa ako sa mga coaching staff that time way back 2009, when we got the grand slam. Siguro isa na rin ito sa mga naging motivations namin na kailangan naming makabalik sa finals kasi for how many years, 'yung Letran nando'n 'yung ups and downs," Esquibel told GMA News Online on Friday.
"Hindi natin makuha 'yung tamang composition ng team so ngayon, hopefully, makabalik and gagawin namin 'yung best namin lalong-lalo na kaming coaching staff para tulungan 'yung team."
Esquibel has seen the highs and the lows of the Letran program.
He entered the squad in 2003 as a trainer before becoming one of the deputies to help propel the Knights to a pair of titles in Season 83 and 84. In 2008, he was promoted to head coach and played a pivotal role in guiding the school to its third championship, completing the historic grand slam.
The following years were marked with challenges as the Knights failed to make it to the finals again — until now.
The Knights pulled off a dramatic 22-25, 28-26, 25-14, 25-20 win in the do-or-die match against Blazers behind Bembem Bautista and Vince Himzon.
"Gusto kong i-commend 'yung team kasi ando'n pa rin 'yung teamwork, hindi nawala kahit na naunahan kami nu'ng first set. 'Yung pressure na-handle nila, that's why naipanalo 'yung Game 2 and now aakyat na sa finals match this Sunday," Esquibel added.
"Hopefully, madala nila 'yung pagiging masaya inside the court kasi ayon 'yung isang key, kahit na lamang 'yung kalaban nag-e-enjoy lang sila, walang pressure and na-overcome nila 'yung malalakas na palo ng kalaban."
Letran will face Arellano University in the best-of-three finals which will open on Sunday noon.

Benilde, Letran face off anew for NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball crown
NCAA De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Colegio de San Juan de Letran are back in the NCAA women's volleyball finals stage as both teams eye the centennial season title. The Lady Blazers hope to take home the crown for the fourth straight season despite experiencing a relatively challenging season. In the past three seasons that Benilde won the title, the Taft-based squad never lost a single game en route to the title. This season, however, the Lady Blazers' 43-game winning streak was cut by none other than Letran in the first round. Benilde also fell to Mapua University at the end of the first round. However, the Lady Blazers seemed to have returned to their championship form just in time as they swept the second round and dispatched Mapua University in the Final Four. For head coach Onyok Getigan, this will be a different season for them, especially with the likes of Mich Gamit, Gayle Pascual, and Cloanne Mondoñedo not playing for Benilde anymore. However, veteran Mycah Go and players like Zam Nolasco, Wielyn Estoque, and Chenae Basarte are ready to dance in the finals again. "Kung titingnan mo, wala na mga senior namin last time, malaking factor 'yun. Ang maganda ngayon, madaling mag-step up yung mga natira, pati rookies," Getigan said. The Lady Knights, meanwhile, eye to rewrite history. In Season 99, Letran was swept by Benilde in the finals. Now, they have a chance to exact revenge against their tormentors. Letran head coach Oliver Almadro, however, said they have to be "better than our best" in facing a formidable team like Benilde. "As I'm always saying, Benilde is a strong team. They're well-coached, they have a deep bench, we really have to find a way with what we have and somehow [have] a flawless game," Almadro said. "'Yung skills and stats mas malalaki sila eh. Panghahawakan namin 'yung last game and last year to fuel us to give the best performance na kailangan namin kasi results will take care of itself." Aside from veteran libero Lara Silva and last year's top freshman Gia Maquilang, the Intramuros-based crew now has Vanessa Sarie who recently broke the NCAA scoring record with her 37-point output against Arellano University in the second round. Dark horses Arellano, Letran begin surprise finals showdown in NCAA men's volleyball
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Arellano University and Colegio de San Juan de Letran have earned their place on the grand stage, just days after pulling off stunning upsets over higher-seeded foes in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament. The Chiefs, who ousted second seed Mapua University, and Knights, who are coming off a stunner over top-seeded Benilde, will begin their best-of-three finals showdown on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the FilOil EcoOil Centre with glory and history both on the line for either school. For one, Arellano has long been chasing that elusive breakthrough men's volleyball title after years of consistent Final Four runs. The closest the Chiefs got to one was in 2018, when the school managed to take Game 1 of Season 93 finals against powerhouse Perpetual, but the next two games saw the Las Piñas crew gutting out victories to seal the deal and start what would turn out to be the ALTAs' four-peat milestone. This time, the Chiefs are out to flip the script in their favor with veterans Adi Villados, Carl Berdal, Anfernee Curamen, AC Guinto, and Jiwen Sinuto anchoring the team. The Knights, however, are also on a quest to make history. It has been 16 long years since Letran last hoisted the men's volleyball crown after the Knights reigned supreme in Season 85 over rival San Beda in their own best-of-three duel. Over the years, the Knights struggled to find their way back to the finals. It took them more than a decade and a half to clinch a finals ticket anew, leaning on the duo of two-time best middle blocker Vince Himzon and seasoned spiker Bembem Bautista. If history is any indication, Arellano has had Letran's as of late. The Chiefs won both of their elimination round clashes with Letran, taking a 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 win in Round 1 before pulling off a 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 in their Round 2 rematch. But for Villados, none of that will matter, emphasizing that both teams will be starting from scratch with the championship at stake. "Hindi namin iniisip na first round at second round tinalo namin sila. Iba 'to. Iba 'tong finals na 'to kasi dito mo makikita 'yung test of character, kung gaano ka-experience 'yung mga players at coaches," team captain Villados said. "Against Letran po, siguro pagiigihan namin sa training and more on viewing kami kasi halos lahat ng teams ngayon ang lakas. Ang hirap makapasok sa finals." Letran, meanwhile, is just savoring the moment as head coach Brian Esquibel stressed they will just have to outdo what they did in the semifinals when they stepped on the finals stage. "Actually hindi naman pressure, ang nafi-feel namin ay confidence kasi tiwala kami sa team, gagawin nila 'yung best nila," said Esquibel, the last coach to steer the Knights to a title back in 2009. Arellano coach Bryan Vitug keeps eyes on the prize as Chiefs peak at the right time
NCAA The Arellano Chiefs are peaking at the right time and head coach Bryan Vitug said this matters as they enter the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball finals. Arellano is back in the finals stage after seven years and its chase for its first title continues. "Ang pinaka-main goal namin sa simula pa lang is to win a championship para sa Arellano and makilala ang men's team sa top ng volleyball," Vitug told GMA News Online. Prior to the Final Four, Arellano ended the elimination round on a four-game winning streak as the Chiefs defeated Letran, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, Emilio Aguinaldo College, and Lyceum of the Philippines University. As they clinched the third spot in the semis, they needed to beat Mapua University twice to earn the ticket to the finals. Vitug said they were aware of the lengthened schedule of the tournament and a big part of their preparations was strength and conditioning, which helped them a lot. "Naniwala kami sa pinapagawa ng S&C (strength and conditioning) namin, malaking bagay 'yung S&C namin kasi mahaba ang season na 'to. Salamat sa kanya kasi na-prepare niya nang maayos 'yung mga bata para mag-peak sa right time at walang ma-injury toward the semifinals," Vitug said. Vitug added the team's openness also helped fix their issues early. "Sobrang hirap ng pinagdaanan namin simula nung first round. Halos nagkokomprontahan kami lagi pag may talo, maraming 'di pagkakaunawaan. Pero napag-usapan naman namin, nagtulong-tulong kami mula sa bench hanggang sa whole staff," he added. The Chiefs, however, are not resting on their laurels as they also expect a tough fight against Colegio de San Juan de Letran who also seems to be peaking in time for the championship. "Expect namin talaga na hindi magiging madali sa simula pa lang kasi lahat ng team ngayon nagpe-prepare, lahat naman gusto manalo, lalo na ang Letran peaking din sila kasi galing sila sa sunod-sunod na panalo nung patapos na ang second round. Mag-prepare kami nang maayos para sa kanila," said the Arellano coach.
