Zam Nolasco, Vince Himzon lead Benilde, Letran to winning streaks ahead of NCAA volleyball Final Four

NCAA After more than three months of action, the NCAA Season 100 volleyball tournament is coming to a close, but not before witnessing excellent performances ahead of the playoffs. The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights went perfect in the last two weeks of the elimination round, with Zam Nolasco and Vince Himzon leading their respective squads in crucial wins heading into the Final Four. With their consistent performances which came just at the right time, Nolasco and Himzon were named as the final Collegiate Press Corps' NCAA Players of the Week, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission, for the period of May 20 to 30. Nolasco has been a steady rise in Benilde's run as the Taft-based squad completed a second round sweep with the Lady Blazers going 4-0 in the homestretch of the tourney. The third-year middle blocker posted a game-high 17 points built on 11 attacks and 6 blocks in their crucial 25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 25-18 victory against Colegio de San Juan de Letran last May 21, then she had six points in their 25-12, 25-19, 26-24 win against Mapua University last May 23 to exact revenge against their first round tormentors. "Tinalo kami last time nung first round [ng Mapua], malaking kumpiyansa 'yun kumbaga nakabawi kami rito. 'Yung nakaraan din 'yung Letran tinalo kami noon, so dala-dala ng mga bata 'yung kumpiyansa," Benilde head coach Onyok Getigan. The streak continued for Benilde and Nolasco as she scored 10 points in Benilde's 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 win against University of Perpetual Help System DALTA before sealing her impressive run in the eliminations with another game-high 12 points on 9 attacks and 3 blocks against Lyceum of the Philippines University where they won 25-20, 25-18, 25-12. The four-peat seeking Benilde wrapped up the eliminations with 16-2 and will enter the Final Four as the top-seeded squad. Nolasco defeated teammate Aya Densing, San Beda's Angel Habacon, and Letran's Gia Maquilang for the weekly award backed by Discovery Suites and World Balance. Himzon, meanwhile, has been one of Letran's pillars as the Knights went 3-0 in the final stretch of the elimination round. The third-year middle blocker had a team-high 21 points built on 18 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, as Letran defeated fellow contender Benilde, 23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-23, last May 21. This was followed by a 13-point outing against Jose Rizal University where Letran won, 25-20, 25-18, 25-12, before the Knights officially clinched the Final Four spot with its victory over Mapua, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20, behind Himzon's 15 points. Himzon edged Arellano's AC Guinto, Perpetual's Kobe Tabuga, and LPU's Jun Frank Edang for the weekly recognition being deliberated upon by writers covering the collegiate beat. The Knights finished the elimination round with a 12-6 card as they will be the fourth-ranked team come semifinals. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Coach Cariño says Perpetual still adjusting as reign in NCAA men's volleyball ends

By JUSTIN KENNETH CARANDANG,GMA Integrated News Dynasties do end, even in NCAA men's volleyball, as the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA was booted out of Final Four contention on Sunday. The ALTAs' hopes for a five-peat were dashed after they fell short against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in their penultimate game of the Season 100 elimination round. For head coach Macky Cariño, endgame lapses were the cause of the defeat of the Las Piñas crew. "Sa game, medyo lapse lang noong dulo. Medyo bumitaw lang noong dulo kasi sa simula parang kakapain mo muna, then 'yung dulo is very important. Nung dulo namin medyo kinapos lang compared nung first set," Cariño told GMA News Online. [In the game, there were some lapses in the end. We kind of let go near the end. At the start, we were feeling it out, but then the end is very important. Our end, we fell short compared to the first set.] Beyond endgame lapses, however, Cariño said Perpetual is also making adjustments after the loss of former head coach Sammy Acaylar and the graduation of some of its old veteran players. "Wala naman nang pupuntahan pa, wala namang dapat sisihin kasi lahat naman nagtrabaho. This season, parang sobrang bigat kasi sa'min kasi 'yung pinaka-tatay namin (Coach Sammy) namatay, so start pa lang ng season mabigat," Cariño said. "Hinilot namin para umangat ang team, so far kinapos talaga. 'Yung composition ng players namin this year is iba talaga, compared from last year na nandoon powerhouse players namin." [There's nowhere to go, nothing to regret, because everyone put in the work. This season, it was so heavy for us because our father figure passed away, so from the start of the season, it was heavy... We massaged it so that the team could move up but we came up short. The composition of players is different compared to last year where we had our powerhouse players.] One major loss for the team this season is two-time NCAA Most Valuable Player Louie Ramirez. "Ngayon semento pa lang kami, bubuuin pa lang. Hopefully, daanan lang namin sa basic. Balik ulit sa simula, hahanap ng players, kasi kapag may materyales ka talagang magi-improve ang team," Cariño said, adding that teams also improved this season and they are still adjusting to his system as well. [Right now, we are just cement, we will build it from here. Hopefully, what we'll go through is basic. We go back to the start, find players, because when you have the materials, the tea will improve.] Season 99 Finals MVP Jeff Marapoc also echoed Cariño's sentiments. "Para sa akin lang, siguro kulang pa lang talaga kami ngayon. Marami pa kaming pagkukulang na kailangan namin i-work para sa susunod na taon," he said. [For me, we just didn't have enough this year. We are still lacking a lot that we need to work on in the coming years.] Not all is lost, however, as the ALTAs can end the season on a high note when they play San Beda University on Wednesday. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

San Sebastian outlasts LPU to snap four-game skid

NCAA San Sebastian College-Recoletos overcame a tough challenge from Lyceum of the Philippines University, 30-28, 21-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-8, on Saturday in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament at the San Andres Gym in Manila. The win came after San Sebastian lost four consecutive games against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, and Mapua University. After falling in Sets 2 and 3, the Golden Stags managed to recover and claimed the fourth set before momentum shifted on their end as they took an early 7-2 lead in the deciding frame. Jun Edang's attack gave a glimmer of hope to the Pirates' run but Kyle Villamor answered to widen the lead. The Golden Stags then continued to cruise to a 10-4 lead before Christian Alba went clutch in the final stretch to claim the victory. Alba led the Golden Stags with 26 points from 20 attacks, four blocks, and two aces, while Villamor added 18 points on top of 30 receptions and seven digs. Benilde sweeps Mapua, books ticket to NCAA men's volleyball Final Four

NCAA De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde swept league-leading Mapua University, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23, on Friday in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament to officially book a ticket to the Final Four. The Cardinals were trying to extend the match as they were tied with the Blazers, 20-20. James Marasigan then put the Blazers in front before a block touch challenge by Benilde went in their favor. An attack error put the Cardinals within one but Rocky Roy Motol's attack and a block by the Blazers pushed them to match point. Mapua then salvaged two more before Jacob Herrera put the exclamation point for the Blazers. Marasigan led the Taft-based squad with 14 points and 14 receptions, while Motol and Herrera had 11 points each. The Blazers, meanwhile, held scoring leader Barbie San Andres to just nine points, while Arjay Ramos had 11 points for Mapua. Olsen Jamisola added 10 points. With the victory, Benilde returned to the Final Four for the first time since Season 94 in 2019 when they reached the finals against the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA. In Season 95, the tournament was cut short due to the pandemic, while they missed the semis bus in Seasons 98 and 99. No men's tournament was held in Seasons 96 and 97. The win also propelled Benilde to the second spot as they improved to 13-3 behind the league-leading Cardinals who slipped to 14-3. The Blazers will still face defending champion Perpetual and Lyceum of the Philippines University, while the Final Four-bound Mapua will finish the elimination round against Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Wednesday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Perpetual Junior ALTAs' Icee Callangan joins defending champ Mapua

NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Icee Callangan is staying in the NCAA, but has found a new home as the rising point guard committed to Mapua University to begin his college stint starting in Season 101 later this year. Callangan was part of the history-making Perpetual Junior ALTAs squad that ruled the previous NCAA Season 100 juniors basketball tournament against La Salle Green Hills in an epic best-of-three finals series. The 20-year-old court general played a huge role in that title run, posting averages of 7.23 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.23 assists, and 1.08 steals to help Perpetual clinch its first-ever basketball title in any rank. As he closed out his high school run as a champion, Callangan now opens his college chapter with another champion, the Mapua Cardinals. Callangan will join seniors Clint Escamis and Cyrus Cuenco and other holdovers in Yam Concepcion, JC Recto, and Andrei Igliane as well as transferees Cyrus Nitura and Cyril Gonzales. Callangan's arrival could fill the hole left by the departure of Lawrence Mangubat and Chris Hubilla, who both left Mapua to bring their act to Jose Rizal University after just one season. Callangan was the latest Perpetual Junior ALTAs to leave after Lebron Jhames Daep, who joined De La Salle University in the UAAP. Their other teammates in Jan Roluna, JD Pagulayan, Jericho Cristino, Kelsey Baldoria, and Aries Borja have all stayed home in Perpetual for college. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
