NCAA Season 101 host Mapua to introduce new tournament format for basketball, volleyball

By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Mapua University is set to tweak the tournament format for basketball and volleyball when it serves as host for NCAA Season 101 slated to kick off in October. Management committee representative Melchor Divina shared the development on Tuesday as Mapua formally received the hosting rights from Season 100 host Lyceum of the Philippines University. For Season 101, both basketball and volleyball will feature a group stage bracket with the 10 member schools set to be divided into two pools based on specific criteria. Once the rankings are determined after the two rounds, there will then be a play-in stage where the fourth and fifth-ranked teams will compete for the last playoff spot. Divina added that Season 101 will also introduce a crossover quarterfinals round, where the teams will duke it out in a best-of-three affair before advancing to the next round. Divina shared the new tournament format is inspired by both the NBA and the US NCAA, saying they hope this would entice more engagement from the public, especially from the students of each participating schools. "Gagawa kami ng kakaibang tournament format, pinaghalo namin 'yung NBA, US NCAA. May play-in, meron na ring quarterfinals sa basketball at volleyball," Divina said on Tuesday. "Para exciting at 'di porket fifth place ka wala ka nang chance. Nilagyan lang namin ng additional excitement lang. Kahit nasa ilalim ka may chance ka pa rin." As of now, the league is looking at opening the season on October 1 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, but Divina shared that it remains a tentative date. "October 1, tentative kasi ayun 'yung availability ng Araneta. Aaralin pa namin kasi that is Wednesday kasi for the past years weekends [and opening] e. Ano ang impact 'pag weekdays, mas marami ba ang tao so ia-assess pa namin," he said. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

NCAA to stage special Mobile Legends tourney as S100 closer

The NCAA will be holding a special tournament featuring Mobile Legends: Bang Bang this coming June and July, just before the 'Grand Old League's' historic Season 100 comes to a close. No less than NCAA management committee chairman and Lyceum of the Philippines representative Hercules Callanta– according to a report by Bea Micaller of GMA Integrated News– confirmed the development, with the official kickoff and first round robin scheduled on June 28 and 29. The second round robin will be staged from July 12 to 13, while the finals round will be held offline and in person from July 25 to July 27 at the Philippine Game Development Expo (PGDX) at the SMX Convention Center. Callanta clarified, however, that the esports tilt is NOT YET part of the NCAA calendar's regular lineup of events– thus making it a 'special tournament' – but emphasized that the league is open to the possibility of its inclusion moving forward. "It's a special event. The aim is to highlight 'yung mga popular games in the Philippines that are not part of the calendar of events ng NCAA pero they're very popular," Callanta told GMA News Online on Monday. He likewise said that the upcoming ML:BB games can be an avenue for the league to gauge how its 10 member schools perceive the event, and to look into the logistical needs should it be formally added to the lineup of sporting events in the future. According to Micaller's report, 'this will not be the first time that NCAA schools are taking part in esports events.' The Collegiate Center for Esports held a Mobile Legends tournament last in 2021, where the 10 NCAA member schools took part. It was an exciting participation for the NCAA representatives as some contingents featured varsity basketball players, such as Letran's Fran Yu and King Caralipio, San Beda's Damie Cuntapay and Yukien Andrada, Perpetual's Jasper Cuevas, and Mapúa's Warren Bonifacio. During the 2021 games, LPU emerged on top and was crowned its inaugural champion. Callanta reportedly said that participation in these pocket tournaments has helped the league in its pursuit of introducing esports this year, which will also likely include Valorant, a first-person hero shooter game, next year. "Actually, through the efforts of Esports Philippines, for the past two or three years already, they conducted competitions in esports among the member schools of the NCAA so sanay na 'yung NCAA sa mga esports competitions kaya lang limited lang." NCAA to stage Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournament

By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News The NCAA is set to launch a special event that features Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, one of the most popular esports in the country, before formally closing out Season 100. NCAA management committee chairman Hercules Callanta of Lyceum of the Philippines University shared that the ML:BB tournament will fire off on June 28 with the first round robin happening until the 29th. The second round robin will be held from July 12 to 13 before the offline finals round take place from July 25 to 27 in the Philippine Game Development Expo (PGDX) at the SMX Convention Center. Callanta, though, emphasized that the ML:BB competition is not part of the regular calendar of events, but stressed the NCAA is open to the idea of including it for good in the future. "It's a special event. The aim is to highlight 'yung mga popular games in the Philippines that are not part of the calendar of events ng NCAA pero they're very popular," Callanta told GMA News Online on Monday. "And to see the sport and how it will be received by the member schools and possibly look at the logistical needs and the possibility of including it sa regular sports." This will not be the first time that NCAA schools are taking part in esports events. In 2021, the Collegiate Center for Esports (CCE) staged an ML:BB contest that featured participation from all 10 member schools. The event drew added interest as several squads were led by prominent collegiate basketball players, including Fran Yu, King Caralipio, Damie Cuntapay, Yukien Andrada, Warren Bonifacio, and Jasper Cuevas. LPU emerged as the inaugural champion of that tournament with Yancy Remulla taking home the MVP honors. Callanta said the league's past experiences in hosting or participating in esports tournaments paved the way for the introduction of ML:BB this year while also sharing that Valorant will be staged next year. "Actually, through the efforts of Esports Philippines, for the past two or three years already, they conducted competitions in esports among the member schools of the NCAA so sanay na 'yung NCAA sa mga esports competitions kaya lang limited lang." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
