Dad killed in Leeds hit and run 'lived and breathed his IVF miracle son'

Daily Mirror01-05-2025

A cyclist killed in a suspected hit-and-run crash which saw the vehicle later burnt and abandoned has been described as a loving father.
John Shelton, 48, died at the scene after being hit by a white Volkswagen Golf on a single-carriageway near Micklefield, Leeds on Monday. The drivers who were travelling in the same direction as the dad of one failed to stop at the scene, police say.
Their vehicle was later found abandoned and burnt out. Two males have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, confirmed West Yorkshire Police.
In a tribute, Mr Shelton's devastated wife Lucy said: "John has been tragically taken from us following horrific circumstances of his death and life will never be the same again. He was a much loved dad, husband, son, brother, uncle, friend and colleague. He will be remembered as one of a kind and we will cherish our memories and they will live on as we navigate supporting our son with a life without his dad."
The collision happened at around 2pm on Monday when Mr Shelton was riding along a long and straight single-carriageway section of the rural road. The Golf was found abandoned in the Potternewton area of Leeds, approximately 10 miles away.
Mr Shelton, who was from Wigan, Greater Manchester, "would always try and help family," his wife continued. In a statement released via West Yorkshire Police, she added: "John had a warm heart and would always try and help family, friends and colleagues.
"He lived and breathed for our five- year-old son who was our IVF/ICSI miracle and we were making plans over the coming months to make memories with our son."
Officers from the Major Collison and Enquiry Team (MCET) are continuing to investigate Monday's collision. Detective Inspector Paul Conroy of the Major Collision and Enquiry Team, said: "Our hearts go out to John's family at what is a desperately sad time, and I want to reassure the public that we have multiple active enquiries ongoing into this incident.
"Two people have been arrested and released on bail, but we continue to strongly urge anyone who can assist our investigation into this hit and run collision to come forwards. Information and footage from the public is always vital in these enquiries and I want to thank those who have spoken with us so far."
The investigation comes as a six-year-old girl who was hit by a Range Rover died in hospital on Tuesday. She was struck on a residential road in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, on Monday night.

Couple steal back their own car after cops ‘refused to investigate theft'… despite AirTag pinpointing its exact location

The couple equipped their stolen vehicle with an essential gadget GRAND THEFT AUTO Couple steal back their own car after cops 'refused to investigate theft'… despite AirTag pinpointing its exact location A COUPLE whose Jaguar was swiped by thieves have stolen it back after cops failed to investigate the theft. Mia Forbes Pirie and Mark Simpson discovered their motor was missing from its spot close to their home in Brook Green, West London on Wednesday morning. However, the shrewd pair had installed an airtag locator in the vehicle which had been taken to Chiswick shortly after. The couple called 999 but cops told them that they were unable to offer immediate assistance. Unwilling to sit idly, Mia and Mark took matters into their own hands. Mr Simpson, 62, reported being nervous as he made the four-mile journey with his wife to the car's new location. The Jaguar E-Pace - a model that sold for about £46,000 new in 2024 - also had a 'ghost immobiliser' fitted which required the right buttons to be hit on the car's control unit before it could start. The couple found the vehicle on a quiet back street with its carpets ripped apart after thugs attempted to access its wiring. Forbes Pirie, a former solicitor and now an award-winning mediator, and Mr Simpson, a commercial barrister, had installed a series of additional security mechanisms on the car after previously experiencing the theft of a vehicle. Neighbours later reported they had heard unusual noises at night. Mia wrote in LinkedIn post: "[Is] it right that the police seem to have no interest in investigating what is likely to have been a reasonably sophisticated operation involving a flat bed truck… if there are no consequences, what is the incentive for people not to do more of this?" However, she lamented the Met Police's lack of investment. Three people arrested after teen boy dies near pub as cops launch murder probe "The police are under-resourced and it's a shame," she told The Times. "But if there aren't any consequences to people stealing cars or a lot of the other crimes where there aren't any consequences, then I don't really see what the deterrent is to stop people from doing it more." In a statement, Met Police told The Sun: "On Tuesday, 3 June at 10.06am, police were alerted to the theft of a vehicle on Sterndale Road, W14. "Officers spoke to the victim, who shared his intention to recover the vehicle himself. "An Apple Airtag was inside, allowing the victim to view its location and trace it. "The victim was reminded by officers to contact police again as needed or if police assistance was necessary at the vehicle's location. "At 11.23am the victim confirmed with police that he had found the vehicle and that it was being recovered by a truck back to the victim's home address. "This investigation is ongoing and police are working with the victim. No arrests have been made at this stage." It comes after one man who has had his £114k Range Rover stolen four times revealed he always gets it back thanks to an essential gadget. Tom Jaconelli, 39, was left infuriated after his posh 150mph SUV was taken from outside his house yet again. Doorbell footage showed the director of car dealership Romans International, having his 2024 Range Rover Sport P550e snatched just metres from his front door. But savvy Tom had fitted his motor with a tracking system which enabled him to get his vehicle back. He said the car was retrieved when three police dog vans stopped the thief in his tracks. Thankfully for Tom, the motor was found 15 minutes away from Tom's home in Cobham, Surrey. Do you have a similar story? Email

Police officer jailed for raping woman while off duty

A police officer who raped a woman while off-duty has been jailed for five years. Former West Yorkshire police officer, PC Ben Bottomley, 23, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. He raped the woman before joining the force and sexually assaulted her while he was a student officer. Both offences were reported to the police after he joined the force. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment for rape and one year imprisonment for sexual assault by penetration on Wednesday. The sentences will be served concurrently. Bottomley will also be subject to the requirements of the Sex Offenders Register for life. West Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Directorate conducted an investigation that led to his conviction, and they immediately suspended him. A misconduct hearing is set to take place next month with a view to ban him from policing. Following his conviction in April, Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins said: 'These were extremely serious allegations to be made against a serving police officer and he was immediately suspended from duty when the investigation commenced in June 2023. 'The victim has shown immense courage in coming forward to report these offences. We do not underestimate how hard it is to report such offending in any circumstances but understand that there may also be additional concerns when the perpetrator works in policing. 'I hope the investigation and subsequent prosecution show that police and partners will take action, regardless of the occupation of the offender. 'We are committed to protecting women from violence and sexual violence. PC Bottomley has demonstrated a disregard for the victim's right to consent and, in addition to any custodial sentence he is given, he will now be subject to extra conditions on him as a convicted sex offender.'
