Abdul Karim proposes establishing food festival to celebrate Subis, Sibuti's cultural and culinary heritage
MIRI (May 3): State Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has proposed a food festival to be held to showcase the unique delicacies and cultural heritage of the Subis and Sibuti areas to the world.
Speaking at the 'Majlis Melanggar Meja' and 'Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri' event at Subis District here today (May 3), Abdul Karim said the celebration reflects the deep-rooted unity among the Kedayan, Malay, Dalik, Miriek, Melanau, Penan, Iban, Chinese and many other ethnics communities in the region.
He highlighted the gastronomic potential of the regions, saying their unique food, culture and way of life are valuable tourism assets deserving global recognition.
'Visitors don't come to shop. They come to experience how people live, to taste their food, and to understand their customs. The gastronomy here is vibrant. This is something we must promote,' he said, adding that the gastronomy of Subis and Sibuti is one of its strongest cultural products.
From Umai to indigenous herbs and traditional cooking techniques, the local fare, he said, deserves a platform that can introduce it to international audiences.
That said, he encouraged the community to take pride in their own culinary heritage, pointing to Umai, which is a raw marinated fish dish, as one of Sarawak's iconic offerings, alongside Sarawak Laksa, which he often showcases abroad during official engagements.
'I have brought chefs overseas to prepare our dishes at events. Even international names like the late Anthony Bourdain recognised Sarawak Laksa as the 'breakfast of the gods', that shows how powerful food can be in promoting our state,' he said.
Abdul Karim also noted that following the recognition of Niah Caves as Unesco World Heritage Site, the state government is already planning to enhance road access, develop resorts and expand rural tourism to support this influx.
He also praised the Majlis Melanggar Meja held at Sibuti Arena – attended by local village development and security committees (JKKKs), government agencies, associations, mosques, and prayer halls – as a model of cultural openness and togetherness.
'The theme, 'Raya Serumpun, Tradisi Harmoni', carries a deep meaning. It symbolises how festive celebrations unite local communities regardless of background,' he said, adding that such customs should not only be preserved but elevated as living cultural elements.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus who is also the assemblywoman of Bekenu; Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurs Development Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat; Deputy Health Minister Malaysia Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni; Resident of Miri Galong Luang; Deputy Resident of Miri Bujang Rahman Seli; Political Secretary to Premier Sarawak Sarkawi Ulis and Pemanca Dr Ali Mudin.

Sarawak eyes 5 mln tourists this year as WAK Festival kicks off
Abdul Karim speaks during the launch of the WAK Festival 2025 calendar today. – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (Aug 13): Sarawak is targeting five million tourist arrivals this year, with 2.4 million already recorded as of July, said State Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Speaking at the launch of the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2025 calendar at the Kuching Old Court House today, Abdul Karim said the state remains on track to meet its goal, though high airfare prices continue to pose a challenge. 'We've seen economy class fares hit RM800, and even more than RM1,000 at times. Prices are always driven by demand and supply. 'I'm looking forward to our new state airline, which could help stabilise rates. 'Apart from that, I do hope also that the airlines that are servicing now, whether it's MAS (Malaysia Airlines), whether it's AirAsia, whether it's Batik Air, they have to be considered and make sure that everything is in order,' he said. Abdul Karim stressed that flagship events like WAK play a crucial role in attracting visitors while showcasing Sarawak's rich arts, culture, and creative industries. This year's WAK, themed 'Roots', interpreted as 'We Are Kindred', will feature 49 partners, 67 events, and 369 programmes across 44 venues in and around Kuching, covering music, theatre, visual arts, crafts, gastronomy, and community activities. He noted that the festival's momentum had already begun building through its June satellite editions in Sibu and Miri, which drew strong crowds and highlighted WAK's role in uniting communities. Looking ahead, Abdul Karim said the International Dragon Boat Regatta will take place this October, featuring teams from 20 countries, making it one of the busiest tourism months for Sarawak. He urged more stakeholders and sponsors to support such events to reinforce Sarawak's position as a unique cultural destination. Also present were State Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew and the ministry's permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah remains firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of tourist safety, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. She gave the assurance in her welcome address at the Coordination Meeting on Tourism with Federal and State agencies, chaired by Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Minister Dauk Seri Tiong King Sing, here, Tuesday. 'On behalf of the State Government, I extend my sincere appreciation to Motac for your continuous support in strengthening Malaysia's tourism industry. 'With strong collaboration between Motac, the State Government and our enforcement agencies, I am confident that we can make Sabah not only one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, but also one of the safest,' Liew said.. She thanked Tiong for his continuous concern over important safety issues affecting Semporna, in particular, saying 'We believe we share the same commitment, and the progress we've made is aligned with the Federal Government.' 'For us, ensuring a safe tourism environment is not just about protecting lives and prioritising well-being, but it is also about safeguarding Malaysia's reputation as a world-class travel destination. Your (Federal Minister's) continued attention and commitment to this pertinent matter means a lot,' Liew added. She reiterated that tourist safety is critical in maintaining the confidence of both domestic and international travellers as well as potential tourism investors. 'In this age of social media, even news of an isolated safety incident can spread rapidly and adversely impact our tourism image. That is why we must always remain vigilant.' Acknowledging that in recent times, Sabah has faced several safety concerns involving accidents during activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling and stand-up paddle-boarding in marine and island areas, Liew emphasised that these underline the pressing need for stronger safety protocols, strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and enhanced training for guides and boat operators. To address these, she asserted that the State Government has taken decisive action. 'For instance, we have strengthened collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to boost patrols and monitoring,' said Liew. Multilingual safety signage has been installed at high-risk tourist locations such as at the arrival hall of the Tawau Airport and Sandakan Airport, she added. Also present were Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Motac Secretary-General Datuk Shaharudin Abu Sohot, Deputy State Secretary (Administration), Datuk Norlija @ Norlijah Danin, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS), Datuk Josie Lai, Deputy Permanent Secretary I to KePKAS, Mary Malangking, Sabah Parks Director Datuk Dr Maklarin Lakim and Sabah Tourism Board (STB) CEO Julinus Jeffery Jimit. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sarawak records over RM1bil per month in tourism receipts from January to June this year
State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah launching the WAK Festival calendar reveal on Wednesday (Aug 13). - ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE/The Star KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded tourism receipts exceeding RM1bil every month from January to June this year, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said this was the best performance achieved by the tourism industry so far. "Tourism receipts include spending on hotels, restaurants, transport, crafts and related expenditure. "In other words, it's the money going into the industry, not just in Kuching but other parts of Sarawak," he said at the calendar reveal of the WAK Festival here on Wednesday (Aug 13). Abdul Karim said the tourism receipts reflected the high numbers of visitors coming to Sarawak in the first half of the year. He said Sarawak was well on track to hit its target of five million visitors this year, having received 2.4mil up to June. "We are looking at 500,000 visitors a month from July onwards, so I'm confident we can reach our target," he said. Abdul Karim said events like the WAK Festival were among the contributing factors attracting tourists to Sarawak. He said the festival, which runs throughout October, had grown from its humble beginnings in 2017, expanding from Kuching to Sibu and Miri last year. "What I love about WAK is that it comes from the community, for the community. "October, which used to be a quiet time, has now turned into an interesting month with a lot of events," he said. Festival director Donald Tan said the WAK acronym was evolving into a new identity this year following the festival's expansion to Sibu and Miri. "WAK used to stand for What About Kuching. We've decided to position ourselves as the WAK Festival which now stands for We Are Kindred," he said. Tan said this year's festival was themed "Roots" to celebrate Sarawak's cultural and historical roots. "It reminds us to honour our shared past even as we grow new connections that branch outward, nurturing fresh collaborations that breathe life into our city's creative landscape," he said. The festival will feature 49 collaborators, 67 unique events and 369 daily activities spread across 44 venues in and around Kuching. Crafts, food and music events are among the highlights. "We want to take creative and artistic activities to street level to engage with the community," Tan said.
