Blackhawks seek rare home win streak as Kraken visit

Reuters18-03-2025
March 18 - After slumping through a winless four-game road trip, the Chicago Blackhawks will aim to earn consecutive home victories for the first time in three months on Tuesday as they host the Seattle Kraken.
Chicago (20-38-9, 49 points) is set to skate at the United Center for the first time since edging the Utah Hockey Club 4-3 in overtime on March 7. Defeating the Kraken (29-34-5, 63 points) would give the Blackhawks their first win streak at home since the club topped the New York Islanders, Washington Capitals and Seattle in December.
The Blackhawks entered the week with 49 points, the second fewest in the NHL, but things have been especially dire on the road, where the team has lost 23 of its past 26 games.
Chicago's most recent trip began with an overtime loss to Central Division rival Nashville before multi-goal losses at Colorado, San Jose and Vancouver.
Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Canucks saw the Blackhawks fall behind 3-0 before Alex Vlasic put the team on the board with 1:09 remaining in the second period.
"I don't know what it is, but we just can't seem to put it together long enough," Chicago defenseman Connor Murphy said. "Maybe it's recognizing how important each shift is as the game gets going or knowing you're on the road and those teams know how to score when you give them looks. It's just tightening up."
While the losses have mounted for struggling Chicago, the team is also collecting milestones. Tuesday will mark the home debut for rookie defenseman Artyom Levshunov, who tallied his first career point with an assist Saturday.
"To do that here in the NHL," said Levshunov, the second overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, "I'm so excited."
Seattle, which is kicking off a four-game road trip, has played .500 hockey since the calendar turned to March. That includes an overtime win and loss during a recent three-game homestand.
On Sunday, the Kraken built a 2-0 first-period lead against the NHL-best Winnipeg Jets before surrendering the next three goals.
"They're the best team in the league with their record, and each one of the games we've played them (this season), two in overtime and one with a goal (against) in the last minute, and they beat us with that," Kraken coach Dan Bylsma said. "They're a benchmark team right now. We're right there with them."
The Kraken have 63 points, 14 better than the Blackhawks but still fourth lowest in the Western Conference. Seattle is seeking to clinch the season series with Chicago after both teams earned home victories earlier in the season.
Seattle rookie Jani Nyman, a second-round pick in 2022, has two power-play goals in his first three career games, including a tally on the man advantage Sunday.
"Clearly, (we) got a good picture of what he can do and what he can be," Bylsma said. "It's not just the shot on the power play that we've seen a couple of times. He had some good time in the offensive zone with the puck, getting over, making plays. ... Really good to see from him in another game."

Tigers shut out White Sox on combined 2-hitter

August 13 - Troy Melton and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout and Wenceel Perez contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly to help the Detroit Tigers defeat the host Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Wednesday. White Sox pitching limited the Tigers to just five hits, but Detroit capitalized to earn a three-game series victory. Will Vest notched his 18th save with a perfect ninth. Sawyer Gipson-Long and Kyle Finnegan were the bridge between Melton, with Finnegan issuing Detroit's lone walk. Melton and fellow rookie right-hander Shane Smith of Chicago dueled for the first five innings. Smith scattered two hits and three walks with five strikeouts without walking a batter while throwing 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes. Melton (3-1) yielded just one hit and struck out six against zero walks, throwing strikes on 43 of 56 pitches. Smith worked around two-out singles in each of the first two innings as well as walks in the third, fourth and fifth but kept the Tigers off the scoreboard. Melton matched his effectiveness to set a brisk pace. Starting for the first time since July 28 against Arizona, he retired the first 12 batters he faced, including three by strikeout. Luis Robert Jr. spoiled the run when he doubled to lead off the fifth, but Melton recovered, escaping trouble with swinging strikeouts of Andrew Benintendi, Miguel Vargas and Edgar Quero. Detroit broke through against White Sox reliever Martin Perez in the sixth. After loading the bases on a single, double and walk, the Tigers got on the board when Wenceel Perez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to the warning track in left-center. Kerry Carpenter, who scored the lone run, had two hits for Detroit. Martin Perez (1-2) took the loss, allowing one run and three hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. The game was played in 2 hours, 19 minutes. That came on the heels of Tuesday's 9-6 Chicago victory, which took 3 hours, 23 minutes and marked Detroit's longest nine-inning game since the pitch clock was initiated in 2023. Detroit won for the seventh time in 10 meetings with Chicago to clinch the season series. The White Sox fell to 9-27 in one-run games. --Field Level Media

White Sox reinstate LHP Martin Perez from 60-day IL

August 13 - By Field Level Media The Chicago White Sox activated left-hander Martin Perez from the 60-day injured list on Wednesday. Perez, 34, landed on the 15-day IL on April 19 with left elbow inflammation and moved to the 60-day IL two days later. He made one rehab start each with Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham. Perez was 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA and 18 strikeouts through four starts before the injury. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that he will be used in relief for the time being and came on in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers for his first outing since April. He is 91-88 with a 4.43 ERA in 318 career games (273 starts) with six teams since his 2012 debut. He played nine seasons with the Texas Rangers, making the All-Star team in 2022 and winning the World Series in 2023. To make room on the 26- and 40-man rosters, Chicago optioned Cam Booser to Charlotte and designated fellow left-hander Jared Shuster for assignment.

Rory McIlroy warns Keegan Bradley: You cannot be a playing Ryder Cup captain

Rory McIlroy has laid down the Ryder Cup gauntlet by insisting the idea of a playing captain cannot work. Team USA's qualifying race ends this week at the BMW Championship in Chicago, the hours ticking down to Keegan Bradley's eagerly awaited decision on whether to name himself as one of his team picks. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and JJ Spaun are already guaranteed their spots at next month's biennial tussle in New York and, on Sunday evening, they will be joined by the three other Americans who will earn their automatic selections. Bradley will then have 10 more days to figure out if he should select himself as one of the six wild cards – and so become the Ryder Cup's first playing captain in 63 years. Bradley is playing in the PGA Tour's penultimate FedEx Cup play-off event – starting at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Chicago on Thursday – and, at 10th in the US standings, could leap into the top six if he defended the title he won 12 months ago. Otherwise, as quite clearly one of the best dozen Americans competing at the moment, he is being urged by his US peers to take the unprecedented act of announcing his own name at the team unveiling on August 27. These include the likes of Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler, who are also in the mix for a pick. 'If I was the captain, I'd pick Keegan,' Cantlay said. Like the overwhelming majority in the opposing ranks, McIlroy does not believe the situation to be anywhere near that simple. In his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday, the world No 2 underlined his feelings on the issue by once again revealing that he was sounded out about the possibility of being a playing captain at the 2027 match in Ireland. 'The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon came up, and I shot it down straight away,' McIlroy said. When asked why, he replied: 'Because I don't think you can do it.' McIlroy went on to expand on his opinion that the dual role is effectively the impossible job. 'It's just the commitments that a captain has that week,' he said. 'You think about the extra media a captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings the captains have to do with the vice-captains, with the PGA of America, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony… there's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. 'If you'd have said it 20 years ago, I'd say, yeah, it was probably possible. But now with how big of a spectacle it is and everything that's on the line, I think it would be a very difficult position to be in. 'Then [on the playing side] the captain isn't going to be on the course all day, so really the captain's only going to be able to play one session on Friday and one session on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice [in a day] if he's playing well?' There can be no question that Europe would secretly relish watching Bradley trying to emulate Arnold Palmer in 1963, as the blue-and-gold brigade attempt to win away for the first time in 13 years. Last month, Telegraph Sport exclusively revealed that Luke Donald had agreed with Bradley's request to redraw the Captains' Agreement – signed by both camps before each match – to smooth the path for Bradley to make history. And the Europeans will already be enjoying the tension building around the issue. Next to Bradley's deliberations, Donald's dilemma looks blessedly straightforward. Europe qualifying finishes a week on Sunday at the British Masters, with Donald naming his six wild cards on September 1. In Chicago, Justin Thomas – seventh in the standings – will be aiming to rise above Harris English, although even Brian Harman, down in 13th, could make himself an automatic pick with victory in this $20m event. McIlroy, who is in second place in the FedEX standings behind Scheffler – with whom he plays in the first round – declared that he 'is as interested as anyone else to see how this [the US team selection] plays out'. But he cryptically warned Bradley that personality should also come into the equation when it comes to finalising the picks. 'You want that adaptability and that flexibility, and having someone that can go five if they're playing really well that week,' he said. 'And [you want] someone who the rest of the guys are really comfortable with. You don't want to have a fox in the henhouse.'
