Man dies trying to cross the English Channel from France
The Pas-de-Calais department's prefecture told The Associated Press that a man was found in cardiac arrest on board a boat which had attempted to reach Britain and then turned back toward French shores.
The man was found near Équihen beach, close to the town of Boulogne-sur-mer. He was pronounced dead despite the efforts of firefighters to revive him. An investigation into the cause of his death has been opened.
French media, quoting numbers from France's Interior ministry, said 18 people have died trying to reach Britain by sea since the start of the year.

Social media video of the collision in Barnegat Bay on Saturday afternoon shows the motor boat rocking after the impact and the 20-foot (six-metre) whale splashing near the craft before swimming away. The person thrown overboard manages to tread water next to the boat. The whale was found dead after it came to rest on a sandbar in shallow water. Marine authorities were not able to get close to the whale due to tidal conditions, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a not-for-profit rescue, rehabilitation and release organization. 'At this point, we really don't have much to go on,' Jay Pagel, stranding coordinator at the center, said Sunday. 'The side of the animal that we were able to observe had no obvious marks on it that we could see. But again, our visibility was very limited.' Pagel said there were reports the whale had injuries prior to the collision captured on video. He noted there was a second video posted online that appears to show the whale making contact with a pontoon boat after the initial collision. Amusement park ride in Saudi Arabia collapses and injures more than 20 people

The accident occurred in the Al-Hada area of the city of Taif on Wednesday, when the '360 Big Pendulum' ride snapped in two, sending the part carrying people crashing to the ground. Video footage posted on social media showed the pendulum swinging riders, who were strapped into their seats, in a wide arc several times before the pendulum arm snaps, sending the passenger section crashing to the ground. The regional government said in a statement that the Taif governor, Prince Saud bin Nahar bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, had ordered an investigation and the park's closure. It said some of those injured received first aid at the amusement park, and others were taken to a hospital. It did not specify how many people were hospitalized. 1 person displaced in morning kitchen fire, dog rescued from afternoon fire

Firefighters were called to a home on Carlsen Avenue at 8:10 a.m. after several 9-1-1 callers reported smoke and flames coming from a wooden, second-floor balcony. The home was divided into multiple apartments. The fire was in a second-floor kitchen and had spread into the roof and attic, OFS said. Firefighters opened the ceiling to extinguish the fire in the attic. No injuries were reported, but OFS said one adult is displaced and victim assistance is offering support. This was the first of two kitchen fires reported in the city Thursday. The second happened at around 1 p.m. at a home on Briarfield Crescent in Orléans.
