Neighbour arrested over RM300,000 jewellery stolen from 'Mek Som'
BACHOK: Police have arrested a man believed to be involved in the theft of jewellery valued at over RM300,000 from an elderly woman in Kampung Pengkalan Kasim, Beris Kubor Besar.
District police chief Superintendent Mohamad Ismail Jamaluddin confirmed that the 49-year-old suspect, who is also the victim's neighbour, was apprehended at 1.20am yesterday at a house in Kampung Tok Belian Beris, Tawang.
"The suspect, a welder by profession, is believed to have been involved in a house burglary at the residence of Mek Som @ Nisah Omar, 77, on April 29," he said in a statement today.
The incident came to light on Tuesday when Mek Som returned home from Quranic lessons at Masjid Pengkalan Chengal around 12.30pm and discovered her bedroom in disarray.
She later realised that her waist pouch containing several items of gold jewellery was missing.
Although a urine test returned negative for drugs, police found that the man has five prior criminal records, including drug-related offences and theft.
"The suspect has two previous cases under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, one under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act, and two more under Sections 456 and 457 of the Penal Code," said Mohamad Ismail.
The arrest was made under Op Pintu/Op Cantas, and the suspect is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking.
He has been remanded for four days until Sunday to assist with ongoing investigations.
